What is Govind Kund and why does it matter?

Govind Kund, on the Govardhan parikrama, is one of the most meaningful kunds in all of Braj, for it is where Krishna received the very name by which the world knows him: Govinda. After Krishna lifted Govardhan to shelter the Brajwasis from Indra's storm, Indra's pride was broken. In the Bhagavata tradition, he descended from his elephant Airavat, laid his crown at Krishna's feet and  begged forgiveness and  then, with the celestial wish-cow Surabhi, he performed the abhishek of Krishna, bathing him and glorifying him as Govinda, the one who gives joy and nourishment to the cows, the gopas, the gopis and the whole of Braj.

The kund is said to have formed from the waters of that bathing.

The story of the naming

In the Bhagavata tradition, when Indra saw that the Brajwasis had turned from worshipping him to honouring Govardhan, he loosed seven days of storm upon them, only to be answered by the boy who lifted the hill like an umbrella. Humbled and  counselled by Brahma and by his mother, Indra came with Surabhi the wish-cow. Surabhi anointed Krishna with her milk and Indra with the waters of the celestial Ganga and  they crowned him Govinda. Vajranabha, Krishna's

great-grandson, is said to have established Govind Kund in memory of this naming and  around it lie Surabhi Kund, Airavat Kund and Indra Kund, each holding a thread of the same story.

A tip from Gurudutt: Stop at Govind Kund on the parikrama and let the meaning of the name settle: this is where Krishna became Govinda, the one who tends and delights the cows and all of Braj. A good guide will point out Surabhi Kund and Airavat Kund nearby, the

wish-cow and Indra's elephant, so the whole scene of Indra's surrender comes together. There is also a tender Gaudiya thread here: Madhavendra Puri rested at Govind Kund, and it was near Govardhan that he found the Gopala deity later worshipped as Srinathji.

Govind Kund and the Srinathji tradition

For the Gaudiya tradition, Govind Kund carries a second, beloved memory. Madhavendra Puri, a great early devotee in Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's lineage, rested here after the parikrama and  a cowherd boy brought him milk and, in a dream, revealed where the Gopala deity lay hidden on Govardhan, the deity later honoured across India as Srinathji. So Govind Kund joins the ancient naming of Govinda to the living devotion of the Goswamis and the pushtimarg.
