High above the Jagannath Temple in Puri, on the sacred Neelachakra, flies the Patita Pavana flag, the dhwaja, changed every day by sevayats who climb the towering temple bare-handed, and famous for flying against the wind. It is one of the most powerful symbols in all of Hinduism, and its grace is said to reach even those who cannot enter the temple. You can have this sacred flag offered in your own name, and receive its prashad at home. Here is the significance of the Jagannath Puri Dhwaja Seva, and how we help you book it. Plan your visit with our Experience My India tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • The Dhwaja Seva is the offering of the sacred Patita Pavana flag on the Neelachakra of the Jagannath Temple.

  • The flag is changed daily by Chunara sevayats who climb the 214-foot temple bare-handed.

  • It famously flies against the wind, a mystery with no scientific explanation.

  • You can have the flag offered in your name, and receive temple prashad at home.

  • The prashad includes dry bhog and a piece or touch of the sacred dhwaja.

  • Different sizes of dhwaja are available; its grace reaches even those who cannot travel to Puri.

I am Gurudutt of Experience My India. Braj is my home, but we help devotees connect with the great dhams across India, and for Puri we work with trusted local guides who arrange sacred sevas at the Jagannath Temple. The Dhwaja Seva is among the most beloved, and we are glad to help you offer it and receive its prashad wherever you are. This guide explains the flag, its meaning, and exactly how the seva works. Here is how to book the Jagannath Puri Dhwaja Seva.

What is the Jagannath Puri Dhwaja Seva?

The Dhwaja Seva is the offering of the sacred flag of Lord Jagannath, the Patita Pavana Bana, hoisted daily atop the temple. The word Bana means flag in Odia, and Patita Pavana means the purifier of the fallen, for this flag is held to be identical with Lord Jagannath himself, extending his grace to every soul. It flies from the Neelachakra, the blue wheel, or discus, at the very summit of the temple's great tower, made of Ashtadhatu, an alloy of eight sacred metals. To have this flag offered in your name is one of the most powerful sevas a devotee can perform.

The daily flag ritual: the Chunara Seva

Every day, in a ritual believed to have continued unbroken for centuries, the Chunara sevayats climb the sheer face of the temple, rising some 214 feet, the height of a forty-five storey building, bare-handed and without ropes or any safety equipment, to remove the old flag and hoist a fresh one. A different flag is offered each day. The sight of the sevayat scaling the great tower is breathtaking, and the ritual is so sacred that, by tradition, prasad is not offered to the deities without the flag flying on the Neelachakra. It is said that were the ritual ever missed, the temple would remain shut for eighteen years.

The mystery of the flag

The Patita Pavana flag is famous for a mystery that has never been explained: it always flies in the opposite direction to the wind. Science offers no answer, and devotees see in it the presence of a power greater than nature. It is said, too, that no bird or aircraft passes over the Neelachakra. Above all, the flag carries a beautiful meaning: because it is identical with the Lord, even those who cannot enter the temple, from far away, or those not permitted inside, receive his grace simply through it. This is why the Dhwaja Seva can bless anyone, anywhere.

Who books the Dhwaja Seva, and when

The Dhwaja Seva is offered by devotees for many reasons, and for any of them we can arrange it:

  • To mark a birthday, anniversary, wedding, or a child's naming or first rice.

  • In memory of a departed loved one, for their peace.

  • To seek the Lord's blessing for health, success, a new home, or a new venture.

  • For those who long to serve at Puri but cannot travel there in person.

  • For devotees abroad or far away who wish to keep their bond with Lord Jagannath.

  • Simply out of love, to have the Lord's own flag fly in your name.

How we help you book it

We, at Experience My India, help you book the Dhwaja Seva through our trusted local Puri connections, who arrange the offering at the temple and the delivery of the prashad. We take your name and details, confirm the day and the dhwaja size, keep you informed, and see that the sacred prashad reaches your home. For those who also wish to visit Puri in person, we arrange the trip, the darshan and the seva together; see our Experience My India tour desk to plan a visit.

The honest bit

Honest words, from a team that values your trust. The Dhwaja Seva is a genuine and beautiful offering, but book it only through trusted providers, and always confirm exactly what is included, the day of the offering, what the prashad contains, and the cost, before you pay. We arrange the seva through our reliable local Puri contacts, not as the temple itself, and we keep you informed at each step. Sacred timings and temple arrangements can change, for instance during the Anasara period before Rath Yatra when the temple closes, so we confirm the details with you. Offered sincerely and through honest hands, the Dhwaja Seva is one of the most moving connections a devotee can have with Lord Jagannath.

Why Experience My India

We are Experience My India, a Ministry of Tourism-approved operator, and Vrindavan Tours and Packages is our unit. Our roots are in Braj, but we help devotees connect with the great dhams of India, and for Puri we work with trusted local guides who arrange sacred sevas at the Jagannath Temple. WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily, 4.5 stars on Google. We arrange your Dhwaja Seva honestly, confirm every detail, keep you informed, and see the prashad safely to your home, with no touts and no false promises. One clear price, told to you before you decide.

Tip from our team: choose a day that means something to you, a birthday, an anniversary, or the memory of a loved one, and offer the dhwaja in their name. When the prashad arrives at your door, with its piece of the sacred flag that flew above Lord Jagannath, you hold in your hands a thread that ties your home directly to the summit of the great temple at Puri. Few offerings feel so personal, or so profound.

Book your Jagannath Puri Dhwaja Seva

Tell us the day you wish, the name and gotra for the offering, and the dhwaja size, and we will arrange the Dhwaja Seva at the Jagannath Temple through our trusted local Puri team, keep you informed, and send the prashad to your home, for one clear price. We can also plan a visit to Puri if you wish to come in person. WhatsApp +91 7302265809, any day 8 AM to 9 PM. 4.5 stars on Google.

"“I booked Jagannath Puri Dhwaja Seva through Experience My India for my father’s birthday. What impressed me most was their transparency. They explained that they work with trusted local Puri connections rather than pretending to be the temple administration. The seva was arranged on the requested day and the prashad arrived at our home. A very peaceful and meaningful experience.”"

The Oldest Temples of Mathura and Vrindavan: A Guide to Braj's Ancient Shrines

The oldest temples of Braj fall into two kinds. Mathura's sacred sites are the most ancient of all, the Krishna Janmabhoomi and the guardian Shivas, though their original temples were destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries. Vrindavan's oldest surviving temples are the great ones founded by the Goswamis in the sixteenth century: Radha Damodar and Radha Raman (around 1542), Madan Mohan (around 1580, the oldest temple of Vrindavan) and Govind Dev Ji (around 1590). To visit the ancient temples with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
