Places to see in Mathura

Mathura, on the Yamuna, is one of the seven holiest cities of India and the birthplace of Krishna. Its finest places to see are:

How to see them and get around

The best way to see the places of both towns is by car, which carries you between the areas and the two cities and waits while you take darshan, dropping you at the edge of the old-town lanes for a short walk in, as cars cannot enter the inner gullies. The cool months of October to March are much the best for sightseeing in both towns, pleasant for walking, while the summer is very hot. Weekdays are calmer than weekends and the great festivals, Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Holi and the holy month of Kartik, are the most joyous but the most crowded.
