1. Madan Mohan Temple
Perched on a hill by the Yamuna, the Madan Mohan Temple is one of the oldest in Vrindavan, established in the sixteenth century by Sanatana Goswami, a close associate of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Its old terracotta tower and sweeping river views make it magical and it is far quieter than the famous temples. Its original deity was carried to Rajasthan in the time of Aurangzeb and a pratibhu, a representative deity, is worshipped here, an honest and tender history. Climb the hill at a quiet hour and you have Vrindavan at your feet.
2. Radha Damodar Temple
Tucked near Seva Kunj and Keshi Ghat, Radha Damodar is one of the seven Goswami temples, its deities carved by Rupa Goswami. It offers a rare, intimate darshan away from the crowds and it holds a treasure: the Giriraj Shila, a stone from Govardhan bearing Krishna’s footprints, given, it is said, to Sanatana Goswami by Krishna himself. Four circuits of this temple are held equal to one parikrama of Govardhan hill and you will see devotees walking them softly. The samadhis of the great saints Rupa Goswami and Jiva Goswami rest here too. It is the most soulful of the hidden places.
3. Shahji Temple
An artistic marvel that most visitors walk straight past, the Shahji Temple is famed for its twisted, spiralling marble columns, unlike anything else in Vrindavan, built by a wealthy devotee in the nineteenth century. Its ornate halls and fine carving reward the eye and it is usually calm. For those who love architecture as well as devotion, this is a quiet delight.
4. Radha Vallabh Temple
One of the old and deeply revered temples of Vrindavan, Radha Vallabh belongs to the Radhavallabh tradition, which so honours Radha that her name, rather than an image, is enthroned beside the deity. It holds genuine daily worship and is rarely as crowded as the famous temples. A place of gentle, old devotion, off the usual trail.
5. Tatiya Sthan
A hidden oasis of calm, Tatiya Sthan is a traditional ashram of renunciate saints who keep the old ways, simple, unlit by show, filled through the day with samaj gayan, the devotional group singing of Braj. Stepping in from the busy lanes feels like stepping back a century. It asks for quiet and modest dress and gives, in return, a peace the famous temples rarely offer. Sessions run in the morning and again in the later afternoon; confirm the hours on the day.
6. Seva Kunj
A sacred grove of low, twisting trees near the Radha Vallabh temple, Seva Kunj is where, like Nidhivan, the nightly raas is believed to take place and so it is emptied by evening. Near Keshi Ghat stands Imli Tala, the place of an ancient tamarind tree where, it is cherished, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu sat in deep meditation, his body turning golden with longing for Krishna. It is a small, tender, little visited spot, easy to miss and lovely to find. Sit a while by the river here and the centuries feel close.

On the Yamuna, near the Madan Mohan hill, lies Kaliya Ghat, remembered as the place where the boy Krishna leapt into the river and subdued the many hooded serpent Kaliya, dancing upon its hoods.
