I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 of them. If you want to stand in the oldest Vrindavan, go to Madan Mohan. It is the first of the great temples the Goswamis raised, built by Sanatana Goswami on a rise above the Yamuna and its weathered red tower has watched over the river for close to five centuries. Most visitors give their hours to the newer marble temples and never climb the hill to this one, which is a pity, because this is where the Vrindavan of the saints began. Here are the timings, the story and how to reach it. Add it to your Vrindavan day with our Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package, message on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809, any day from 8 AM to 9 PM.
The oldest of the Goswami temples
When Chaitanya Mahaprabhu sent his closest followers, the Goswamis, to Vrindavan in the sixteenth century to recover the lost holy places of Braj, they raised a set of great temples that still stand as the heart of the town. Of these, Madan Mohan, built by Sanatana Goswami, the eldest of the six, is the earliest. It sits on a low hill known as Aditya Tila above the Yamuna and its tall red sandstone shikhara, its tower, is one of the oldest surviving structures in Vrindavan, of a piece with its sister temples Radha Raman, Radha Damodar and Govind Dev Ji. To visit Madan Mohan is to see Vrindavan as the Goswamis first built it, in weathered stone rather than modern marble.
The deity and the flight to Rajasthan
The name Madan Mohan means the one who enchants even Madan, the god of love, a name of Krishna as the supreme charmer of hearts. There is an important thing to understand about the deity here and it is the same story that touches several of Vrindavan’s oldest temples. In a time of danger to the temples, the original deity of Madan Mohan was carried away for safety to Rajasthan and it resides today at Karauli, where the worship has continued without a break. What is worshipped in the Vrindavan temple now is a pratibhu, a representative or substitute deity, installed so that the worship on the original spot never ceases.
An honest point: this means that the ancient original murti is at Karauli, not in Vrindavan and I tell pilgrims so plainly, because some come expecting the original and should know. The pratibhu in Vrindavan is fully worshipped and fully sacred in the tradition; it is not a lesser thing, but it is worth knowing which deity you are before.

What to see
The glory of Madan Mohan is the old temple itself: the tall red sandstone tower, weathered by centuries, rising from its hill above the river. Climb to it for the structure and for the view, because from this rise you look out over the Yamuna and the rooftops of old Vrindavan, one of the quieter and more beautiful vantage points in the town. The ancient temple stands a little apart and near it is the newer temple where the daily worship of the pratibhu is offered. It is a place to come for stillness and for history rather than for spectacle and the fewer crowds here than at the famous temples are part of its peace.
Where it fits in a Vrindavan visit
Madan Mohan sits in the old quarter near the river, so it groups naturally with the other Goswami temples and the ghats into a slow morning on foot. A fine circuit is Banke Bihari at the opening, then the quiet Goswami temples, Radha Raman and Radha Damodar among them, Madan Mohan on its hill and down to Kesi Ghat on the Yamuna. Our places to visit in Vrindavan guide have the full route and every temple has its own guide on our temples of Mathura and Vrindavan hub.
When to visit
October to March is the comfortable season across Braj. For this temple in particular, come for the Mangala Aarti at dawn or in the late afternoon, when the low sun warms the old red stone and the view over the Yamuna is at its best. It is quiet most of the year, one of its charms and busier during the Kartik season and the great festivals. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide has the seasons and our festivals of Braj page the calendar.
How to reach
The temple is on Aditya Tila near the Yamuna, in the old quarter of Vrindavan and the last stretch is best done on foot, with a short climb to the temple on its hill, since vehicles cannot follow far into the old lanes. A car or e-rickshaw brings you to the edge of the quarter and you walk in. From Delhi, Vrindavan is about 180 kilometres by the Yamuna Expressway; our distance from Delhi to Vrindavan guide covers the routes. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service handles the day and a Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour builds it in.
The honest bit
Honest words on this temple. Darshan is free, as everywhere in Braj and no official VIP pass exists here or anywhere in the region. The original ancient deity of Madan Mohan is at Karauli in Rajasthan, not in Vrindavan; what is worshipped here is a fully sacred pratibhu and I say so plainly so no one arrives mistaken. The temple is old and weathered rather than grand and reaching it involves a short climb up the hill, so those with weak knees should know that. It is a place of quiet and history, not spectacle. And the old lanes and the river ghats nearby are best walked, so wear easy footwear and mind the monkeys, which are bold along the river.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar and the old Goswami temples are the Vrindavan I love most to show, because they ask to be explained. Since 2018 that is more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. At Madan Mohan a local gives you the temple most visitors miss: the climb to the oldest tower in Vrindavan, the story of Sanatana Goswami who raised it, the honest account of the deity at Karauli and the pratibhu here and the finest quiet view over the Yamuna in the town. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.
Tip from Gurudutt: climb to Madan Mohan in the last hour before sunset. Most visitors never make the short climb at all. Those who do, late in the day, stand by the oldest tower in Vrindavan with the Yamuna below turning gold, in near silence and understand in a moment why the Goswamis chose this hill to begin.
