The three towns and their sights

The three towns sit close together along the Yamuna, each holding a chapter of Krishna’s life. The table gives the sights of each; the sections below cover them in full.

Mathura sightseeing

Begin where Krishna was born. The Krishna Janmabhoomi stands on the site of the prison of Kansa, the deep heart of Mathura. Add the grand Dwarkadhish Temple, built in 1814, the town’s principal shrine and Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna, where the evening aarti is loveliest. The lanes around hold the famous pedas and the bustle of a pilgrim city. All darshan is free.

Gokul sightseeing

A short drive from Mathura lies Gokul, where the infant Krishna was raised in secret and to my heart the tenderest of the three. See Nand Bhavan, the home of his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda, high on a rise; the ancient Chaurasi Khamba, a pillared hall of great age; and, above all, Raman Reti, the soft sacred sand where pilgrims roll in devotion. Brahmand Ghat, where Yashoda is said to have seen the universe in the child’s mouth, completes it. Gokul is quiet and unhurried and often the most moving day of the tour.

Vrindavan sightseeing

Vrindavan, the town of Krishna’s childhood, is the richest in temples. See Banke Bihari, the most beloved, at the dawn opening; the marble Prem Mandir, magical after dark; the calm ISKCON Krishna Balaram compound; the ancient Radha Raman, with its fire kept since 1542; and the atmospheric grove of Nidhivan and Seva Kunj. How to tour all three

The three towns are close, so a private car ties them together easily. Base yourself in Vrindavan for the whole tour; the distances are short, so there is no need to change hotels. A common rhythm is Vrindavan’s temples on the first day, Mathura and Gokul on the second and the wider Braj on a third. The best time for sightseeing

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for three towns of walking and temples. Kartik in autumn is the most devotional season and the great festivals are magnificent but very crowded. Whatever the season, start each day early for the calm morning darshan and to beat the crowds. The honest bit

A complete guide must be an honest one. Every darshan in all three towns is free; no one should charge you for it or sell you a VIP pass, for there is no official VIP pass for Banke Bihari. Banke Bihari has no daily Mangala Aarti, only rare festival days, while ISKCON holds a genuine one. Radha Raman's fire has burned since 1542; Nidhivan's night raas is a cherished belief, not a documented fact. The Yamuna is revered and, honestly, polluted. Told plainly, the three towns give more than any embellishment could.
