Agra and the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is about 70 to 75 km from Vrindavan, an easy day trip, and for most visitors it is the obvious addition. Go at sunrise: the marble is at its softest and the crowds are thinnest, and it frees your afternoon to return to Braj for the evening darshan. Agra Fort deserves the time too, and the Itmad ud Daulah, the so called Baby Taj, is a small jewel most people skip. Two honest notes that save trips: the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so do not plan your Agra day for one, and the entry ticket is always paid separately to the government by every visitor, never bundled into a package price. Fatehpur Sikri

About 90 km from Vrindavan, beyond Agra, stands Fatehpur Sikri: the red sandstone city Akbar built as his capital and then abandoned, reputedly for want of water. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, extraordinarily well preserved, and eerie in the best way, an entire imperial capital standing empty. Within it is the dargah of Salim Chishti, still a living place of pilgrimage where people tie threads for their prayers. It pairs naturally with an Agra day, though the combination makes for a long one, so give it a full day if you can rather than squeezing it after the Taj.

Bharatpur and Keoladeo bird sanctuary

About 70 km from Vrindavan, across the Rajasthan border, lies Keoladeo Ghana National Park at Bharatpur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the great bird sanctuaries of the world. In winter it fills with migratory birds and the birdwatching is genuinely world class; in the dry months it is far quieter and less rewarding, so time it right. You explore it on foot, by bicycle or by cycle rickshaw with a naturalist, which is a lovely, unhurried way to spend a morning. There is an entry fee, and the fee structure differs for Indian and foreign visitors; check the current rate rather than trusting an old figure. Bharatpur also holds the Lohagarh Fort, the iron fort the British never took.

Deeg Palace, the overlooked one

If you take one piece of advice from this page, take this one. About 50 km from Vrindavan, in Rajasthan, stands the Deeg Palace, built by the Jat rulers of Bharatpur, and it is one of the loveliest places in this whole region. It is a water palace: garden courtyards, arcaded pavilions, enormous stone tanks, and a system of hundreds of fountains fed by those tanks, built to imitate the monsoon. It is beautifully preserved. It is almost completely empty of visitors. You can walk it in near solitude while a hundred people jostle for a photograph at more famous places an hour away. The fountains run only on certain occasions rather than daily, so confirm before you go if that is your reason for coming, but the palace and its gardens are worth the drive regardless. Kaman, a forest of Braj

About 50 km away, over the Rajasthan border, is Kaman, known traditionally as Kamavan, and it is counted among the twelve forests of Braj, the sacred groves associated with Shri Krishna's leelas. It is a quiet place with old temples and kunds, visited by devotees on the Braj Chaurasi Kos parikrama rather than by tourists, and it belongs to the deeper devotional geography of this land rather than the sightseeing circuit. The outer Braj sites within an hour

Before you drive out of Braj for a day trip, remember that the outer Braj circuit itself lies within this radius and is, for a pilgrim, more important than anything else on this list. Govardhan is about 22 km, where the hill Shri Krishna lifted is circled, never climbed. Gokul and Mahaban, about 25 km, are where the infant Krishna was raised, and my own home. Barsana, about 45 km, is Radha Rani's town, and Nandgaon about 50 km. Dauji at Baldeo, about 30 km, holds the Balaram temple. Soor Sarovar and Sikandra

On the way to or from Agra sit two more stops worth knowing. Soor Sarovar, also called Keetham Lake, is a bird sanctuary about 60 km from Vrindavan with a well known bear rescue facility beside it, a gentle and humane place that families with children particularly enjoy. And Sikandra, about 70 km, holds the tomb of Akbar himself, a grand and strangely peaceful complex with deer wandering the gardens, far quieter than the Taj and often had almost to yourself. Both fit naturally into an Agra day without adding much driving.

How to fit these into your trip

Here is my honest advice on sequencing. If you have two days, spend them on Braj alone: the temples, Govardhan and Gokul. Do not dilute a short pilgrimage with a monument. If you have three days, add Agra and the Taj as a full day. With four or five days, add either Bharatpur and Deeg for something completely different, or Fatehpur Sikri after Agra. The mistake I see most often is a family with two days trying to fit the Taj, Govardhan and the whole Vrindavan temple circuit into them, and doing none of it properly.
