Why the two directions are not the same

Vrindavan’s old quarter is a tangle of narrow one-way lanes shared with pedestrians, e-rickshaws, cows and pilgrims walking to darshan, and traffic is channelled differently depending on which way you are heading. Do not assume the shortest line on the map is the quickest drive, especially around the aarti hours and at weekends.

The order that saves your evening

This is the real answer most people searching this route actually need. Nidhivan is cleared and locked after its evening aarti, in the living belief that Radha and Krishna perform the raas there each night, and nobody is permitted to remain. It must therefore be seen in daylight. Prem Mandir is the opposite: pleasant by day, but genuinely magnificent only after dark, when the white marble is washed in changing colour and the musical fountain show runs.

So if you are standing at Prem Mandir in the afternoon, do not linger. Take the twenty minute ride to Nidhivan straight away, see the grove unhurried while there is still light, and then come back to Prem Mandir in the evening for the illumination. It is a short round trip and it is worth making. The alternative, staying at Prem Mandir until dark and then heading over, means arriving at a locked gate.

How to travel between them

• E-rickshaw. The usual choice, cheap and nimble in the lanes; agree the fare before you sit, as there is no meter.

• Auto rickshaw. A little quicker on the wider roads; again, fix the price first.

• On foot. Roughly an hour, fine in the cool months by day, less comfortable after dark.

Fix the fare before the journey begins. Drivers at the tourist points quote high to visitors, and a price agreed at the start saves an argument at the end.

A perfect Vrindavan evening

Walk the short distance to the Banke Bihari temple lanes for the evening darshan, since it sits close by. Then take the vehicle across to Prem Mandir, arriving while the sky is still fading so you can walk the gardens and see the carved leela scenes before the lights come up. Stay for the illumination. What to know at each end

• At Prem Mandir. Entry and the light show are both free. The complex is wide, level and easy underfoot, the kindest major site in Vrindavan for elderly visitors and families, and there is proper parking. Allow a good hour.

• At Nidhivan. Entry is free, photography inside the grove is discouraged, and the site closes strictly after the evening aarti. The monkeys here are bold, so hold your phone and glasses tight, and your driver will wait a little away in the narrow lanes.
