📌 QUICK ANSWER
The Shri Radha Shyamsundar temple is a historic Goswami temple in old Vrindavan (Seva Kunj, near Loi Bazar), one of the Sapt Devalayas of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, linked to the saint Shyamananda Prabhu. By sacred tradition, its original deity was given to Shyamananda by Radharani herself, from her own heart, at the spot of the Nupur-Prapti within the complex. The temple is open for darshan from the pre-dawn Mangala Aarti (around 4 to 6 AM, seasonal) until about 9:15 PM, closing at midday. The lanes are too narrow for cars, so reach Loi Bazar by e-rickshaw and walk in. To visit it with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The legend: the deity from Radharani's own heart
The most beautiful story of the Radha Shyamsundar temple and the reason for its fame, is the tale of how its deity came to be. The saint Shyamananda Prabhu, a great devotee, was serving in the sacred groves of Seva Kunj in Vrindavan, sweeping and cleaning them in loving devotion. One day he found a lost anklet (nupur), a divine ornament, which was none other than the anklet of Srimati Radharani herself. When Radharani came, by her grace, to reclaim her anklet, she was so moved by Shyamananda's pure service that she gave him a priceless gift: she drew from her own heart a small, enchanting deity of Shyamsundar (Krishna), affectionately called Lala-Lali and gave it to him to worship. The very spot of this divine exchange, the Nupur-Prapti Sthan ('the place of finding the anklet'), is preserved within the temple complex. So the deity of Radha Shyamsundar is believed to have come, quite literally, from the heart of Radha, which makes this temple one of the most moving in all of Vrindavan.
The Shyamanandi tilak: the mark of the anklet
The story gives Vrindavan one more treasure. When Radharani pressed her magical anklet against the forehead of Shyamananda Prabhu, it left a distinctive mark; and that mark became the official tilak, the sacred forehead marking, of his entire spiritual lineage, the Shyamanandi tilak, worn by his followers to this day. So the very tilak of a tradition was born here, from the touch of Radha's own anklet.
The three pairs of deities
The main altar of the temple is unique in Vrindavan, for it holds three distinct pairs of Radha-Krishna deities, worshipped side by side: the original small Sri Sri Lala-Lali, the very deity given by Radharani from her heart; Sri Sri Radha Kunjabihari; and the large, prominent Sri Sri Radha Shyamsundar, installed in 1719 by the great scholar Baladeva Vidyabhushana, after whom the temple takes its name. To take the darshan of all three pairs together, including the deity from Radha's own heart, is a rare and precious blessing.
The temple and its place among the Sapt Devalayas
The Radha Shyamsundar temple, dating to 1578 CE, is built chiefly of beautiful red sandstone, in the old style of Vrindavan's Goswami temples. It stands as one of the Sapt Devalayas, the seven ancient and most revered temples founded in the Gaudiya tradition in Vrindavan, a group that includes the famous Radha Raman temple and the historic Radha Damodar, Radha Gopinath and others, the old devotional heart of the holy town. The Radha Shyamsundar temple holds a special distinction among them: it was the very first shrine in all of Vrindavan to establish a daily, uninterrupted Mangala Aarti, the pre-dawn worship, a tradition it keeps to this day.
Where is the Radha Shyamsundar temple and how to reach it
The temple is tucked away in the narrow old lanes of Vrindavan, at Mohalla Seva Kunj, near Loi Bazar (Gotam Nagar), on the very same road as the historic Shri Radha Damodar temple. It is about 10 to 12 km from Mathura Junction railway station. Because the approach lanes of old Vrindavan are highly compact and crowded, cars cannot reach the temple: the easiest way is to take a local e-rickshaw or auto to the Loi Bazar area and walk the final stretch on foot through the lanes. It is naturally visited together with the nearby Radha Damodar temple and the other old Goswami shrines; see our places to visit in Vrindavan guide and we can arrange your pooja and seva.
Tips for visiting
Come for the pre-dawn Mangala Aarti, the tradition the temple pioneered, but confirm its seasonal time.
Reach Loi Bazar by e-rickshaw or auto, then walk the final narrow lanes on foot.
Take the darshan of all three pairs of deities, including the original Lala-Lali.
See the preserved Nupur-Prapti Sthan, the spot of Radha's gift, within the complex.
Pair it with the nearby Radha Damodar and the other old Goswami temples.
The temple closes at midday (noon to about 4 PM) and at night (about 9:15 PM); plan around it.
The honest bit
Honest words from one born in Braj. The Radha Shyamsundar temple is a quiet, ancient, deeply holy place in the old lanes, not a grand modern temple; its treasure is its deity, its history and its legend, not spectacle and this is exactly its beauty. Come for the darshan of the deity given from Radha's heart, the preserved Nupur-Prapti Sthan and the pre-dawn Mangala Aarti it pioneered. The timings here are the temple's usual ones, but the Mangala Aarti is seasonal and all can shift on festival days, so confirm on the day. The lanes are narrow and crowded, so come on foot with patience and a local who knows the way helps. The history and legends here come from the Gaudiya tradition and such sacred histories carry the variations of long telling; the devotion is undoubted. Sought out with its story known, Radha Shyamsundar is one of the loveliest hidden shrines of Vrindavan.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I love to walk pilgrims through the old Goswami temples of Vrindavan that many miss, Radha Shyamsundar among the most beautiful. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We bring you through the narrow lanes to the temple, tell you the legend of the Nupur-Prapti on the very spot, time your visit for the aartis, take you on to Radha Damodar and the other old shrines and arrange your seva, with no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.
Tip from Gurudutt: of all the stories of Vrindavan's temples, few move me like this one. When you stand before the little deity of Lala-Lali at Radha Shyamsundar, remember that it was drawn, they say, from the very heart of Radha and given to a humble devotee who asked for nothing but to sweep her groves. Seek out the Nupur-Prapti Sthan within the temple, the spot of that divine gift and stand there a moment in silence. In this quiet, ancient shrine, away from the crowds, you may feel the tenderness of Radha herself closer than anywhere; it is one of the hidden jewels of Braj.
