Vrindavan: the temple town of Krishna's childhood

Vrindavan is a town of some five thousand temples, where the young Krishna played his enchanting leelas among the groves and the gopis. Its most beloved temple is the Banke Bihari, best at the calm morning darshan; the grand marble Prem Mandir, glorious with its evening light show; the ISKCON temple with its continuous kirtan; and the mysterious grove of Nidhivan, where Krishna is said to dance the Ras each night. In the evening, the Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat is a sight to behold. Vrindavan is devoted to making a living town.

Govardhan: the sacred hill Krishna lifted

About an hour away rises Govardhan, the sacred hill, worshipped as Giriraj Maharaj, a form of Krishna himself. When Indra, the king of the gods, sent terrible storms to punish Braj, the child Krishna lifted the whole of Govardhan hill upon his little finger and held it aloft for seven days and nights, sheltering all the people and cattle of Braj beneath it, teaching them to worship the hill and nature that sustained them rather than the proud Indra. To this day, Govardhan is not climbed but revered, and the devout walk around it in the sacred parikrama. It is one of the holiest places in all of Vaishnavism.

The Govardhan parikrama

The great act of devotion at Govardhan is the parikrama, the circumambulation of the hill, about 21 km, walked barefoot by the faithful, often in a single day, and by some rolling their whole bodies along the path. It is said that circling Giriraj washes away sin and grants every wish. Along the way lie many sacred spots, and you may walk all of it, or a part, or the shorter parikrama of the Mukharvind at Jatipura where Giriraj is bathed in milk. These are the chief points along the path.

From Vrindavan and the villages around, Krishna and the cowherds grazed their cattle on the slopes of Govardhan, and it was to shelter these very people that he lifted the hill. The distance between them, and how to visit both

Govardhan lies about 22 to 26 km from Vrindavan, roughly an hour by road, so the two are easily combined. In a single day, you can take the morning darshan in Vrindavan and drive to Govardhan for the Giriraj darshan and a part of the parikrama or the Mukharvind. But to do both justice, especially to walk the full 21 km parikrama, two days are far better, one for Vrindavan's temples and one for Govardhan and its holy circle. There is little public transport around the hill, so a car with a local driver, who can follow the parikrama by road as you walk, is by far the best way. How to reach

Both are reached by road: Vrindavan is about 14 km from Mathura, and Govardhan about 22 km from Mathura and 22 to 26 km from Vrindavan. The nearest railway station is Mathura Junction, and the nearest major airport is Delhi, about 150 km away. The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the temples and, above all, for the long barefoot parikrama, while the summer is fierce on the open path. The two places are most spectacular during the great festivals: Govardhan Puja, or Annakut, the day after Diwali, celebrates the very lifting of the hill and is the greatest day at Govardhan, while Guru Purnima brings the huge Mudia parikrama. Tips for visiting Vrindavan and Govardhan

• Give two days if you can: one for Vrindavan's temples, one for Govardhan and the parikrama.

• Take Vrindavan's Banke Bihari darshan early, in the calm of the morning.

• For the parikrama, start before dawn, go barefoot, and carry water; it is about 21 km.

• If you cannot walk the full circle, do a part, or the shorter Mukharvind parikrama at Jatipura.

• Remember Govardhan is worshipped, not climbed; do not set foot upon the hill itself.

• Come October to March, and for Govardhan Puja after Diwali if you can, the hill's greatest day.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. Vrindavan and Govardhan make a wonderful pair, but be realistic about time and effort: Vrindavan's temples alone fill a day, and the full Govardhan parikrama is a barefoot walk of about 21 km, several hours at least, so do not try to cram both into a rushed single day if you wish to walk the whole circle. Two days are far better. The parikrama path is long and can be rough and hot, so an early start, water and a car followed by road matter. Remember never to step on Giriraj hill itself, which is revered as the Lord. And beware touts near the temples; darshan is free. Taken at the right pace, with a local hand, the temple town and the holy hill together are the very soul of Braj.
