Barsana: the village of Radha

Barsana is the village of Radha, the beloved of Krishna, set upon and around the four peaks of Bhanugarh hill, said to represent the four faces of Brahma. Its crowning glory is the Radha Rani temple, also called the Shriji temple or Ladli Ji, rising in red and white stone atop the hill, reached by a climb of about 200 to 225 steps, or by ropeway and palki. It is one of the very few temples in the world dedicated chiefly to Radha. On another peak stands the Maan Mandir, marking the cave where Radha once sulked in loving anger, or maan, until Krishna soothed her. Around the village lie the lovely Prem Sarovar, the lake of love, and Sanket, the secret meeting place of Radha and Krishna.

Nandgaon: the village of Krishna

A little way off, about 8 to 10 km, stands Nandgaon, the village of Nanda Maharaja, Krishna's foster father, where Krishna spent much of his boyhood after leaving Gokul. Its heart is the Nand Bhavan temple, the home of Nanda, set high on Nandishwar hill above the village, with beautiful views over the Braj countryside and a climb of its own. Below lies the sacred Pan Sarovar, one of the loveliest lakes of Braj, where Krishna is said to have watered his cows. Nandgaon is quieter and greener than Barsana, and deeply devotional, the home ground of Krishna's childhood among the cowherds.

Barsana and Nandgaon lie about 8 to 10 km apart, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road, and are always visited together as a pair, along with the villages and lakes between them. Both are about 45 to 50 km from Mathura and Vrindavan, roughly one to one and a half hours by road, on the way towards the Rajasthan border. There is little public transport out here, so a car with a local driver is by far the best way to see both hills and the sacred spots around them in a single trip. How to reach Barsana and Nandgaon

The twin villages are reached by road from Mathura or Vrindavan, about 45 to 50 km, towards the western edge of Braj. The nearest railway station is Mathura Junction, and the nearest major airport is Delhi. Because the two villages sit atop hills and the sacred spots are spread across the countryside, a private car and a local guide make the trip far easier, especially for the climbs, where a ropeway or palki can be arranged for elders. Barsana and Nandgaon are among the most beautiful and devotional places in all of Braj, but they are rural hilltop villages, so come prepared for climbs, simple facilities and, at festival times, enormous crowds. The Radha Rani temple's 200-plus steps are a real climb, so arrange the ropeway or palki if you need it, and beware anyone selling paid VIP darshan, for the temples are free and open. Distances are approximate and the roads are rural. Lathmar Holi is a wonder, but it is crowded and boisterous, so plan carefully.
