The temple with no Radha idol

Walk into the Radha Vallabh temple and look at the altar, and you will see Shri Radha Vallabh Lal Ji, the form of Krishna worshipped here, and beside him an empty space with a crown resting in it. That crown is Radha. There is no idol of hers, no image, no figure. It is not an oversight and it is not a loss. It is the deepest statement any temple in Vrindavan makes, and it is why this temple, quiet and modest beside the great marble palaces of the town, is beloved by Brajwasis in a way that visitors rarely understand on a first pass. Timings, entry and location

The temple stands in the old lanes of Vrindavan at Radha Vallabh Ghera, Gotam Nagar, beside Seva Kunj and a short walk from Banke Bihari. Darshan runs across an early Mangala Aarti, a morning session and an evening session with a midday closure, and unlike Banke Bihari nearby this temple does hold a daily Mangala Aarti before dawn. Why Radha is not depicted

The Radhavallabh tradition holds that Radha is not an object of vision but of feeling. To carve her, to cast her in metal, to fix her in a form that the eye can hold and the mind can settle on, would be to make her smaller than she is. So she is present by her crown, and by the name of the deity himself, and by the entire orientation of the worship, and she is left unrepresented, because representation would be a diminishment. Consider that. In a land filled with images, this temple decided that the highest devotion was to leave the beloved unseen. When a visitor asks me where Radha is, I tell them to look at the crown, and then to look at the priests, and then to look at the devotees weeping in the doorway, and I say: she is what all of this is pointed at. She is not missing. She is the reason.

Swami Hit Harivansh and the Radhavallabh sampradaya

The temple is the seat of the Radhavallabh sampradaya, founded by Swami Hit Harivansh Mahaprabhu in the sixteenth century, one of the four great devotional traditions that shaped Vrindavan as we know it. His path is called the Hita tradition, and its whole doctrine can be put simply: Radha is supreme, and Krishna is worshipped as her beloved, Radha Vallabh. Not the other way around. Everything follows from that inversion, including the empty space on the altar. Hit Harivansh also revealed Seva Kunj, the grove where Krishna is said to have served Radha after the raas, and his lineage maintains it still. The two places sit close together and belong to one another.

Shri Radha Vallabh Lal Ji, the deity

The deity worshipped here is Shri Radha Vallabh Lal Ji, and he is served with a tenderness that is particular to this sampradaya. The seva here follows the rhythms of a household rather than a court: the deity is woken, bathed, dressed, fed, sung to and put to rest, as a beloved is cared for rather than as a king is petitioned. The temple's music tradition is famous, and the pads and songs of the Hita tradition, composed by Hit Harivansh himself, are still sung here. If you have any ear for it at all, stand and listen rather than hurrying to the next temple on your list.

The temple's history and the old temple

Like the other great deities of Vrindavan, Shri Radha Vallabh Lal Ji was moved to Rajasthan during the reign of Aurangzeb to protect him, and the original temple in Vrindavan stands to this day as a ruin, a red sandstone structure of real beauty, while the deity is worshipped in a newer temple built beside it. The ruin is worth your attention: it is one of the finest examples of the old temple architecture of Vrindavan, and standing in it you get a sense of what this town looked like before the marble and the crowds. Ask to be shown it. Most visitors never realise it is there.

What to see and how to visit

Look first at the altar, and find the crown. Then look at the ruin of the old temple. Then, if the singing is happening, stop and listen. It is a small temple and it needs only twenty unhurried minutes, but the twenty minutes should be unhurried, because everything here is quiet and inward and will be entirely wasted on a visitor who is glancing at their phone. Dress modestly, remove footwear, follow the temple's rules on photography rather than assuming, and watch your belongings, because the monkeys of these lanes are quick. Radha Vallabh and Seva Kunj

These two places are one thing, and visiting either without the other is a half visit. Swami Hit Harivansh founded the sampradaya, revealed Seva Kunj, and gave Vrindavan the theology in which Radha comes first. Seva Kunj is the grove where Krishna served her; the Radha Vallabh temple is where Krishna is worshipped as her beloved. The garden and the temple say the same thing in two languages. They stand within a short walk of one another in the old lanes, so take them together, and take Banke Bihari at its morning opening before both. Festivals at Radha Vallabh

Radha Ashtami, the appearance day of Radha Rani, is naturally the great festival here, and given the theology of this temple you can imagine what that day means to this sampradaya. Holi is celebrated with the famous samaj gayan of the tradition, and Janmashtami and the month of Kartik bring their own observances.
