The story behind Lathmar Holi

Lathmar Holi re-enacts a beloved leela of Radha and Krishna. By tradition, Krishna would come from his village of Nandgaon to Radha's Barsana to tease her and the gopis and play Holi with them and the women of Barsana, in loving mischief, would chase him and his friends away with sticks. To this day, the men of Nandgaon come to Barsana on Lathmar day, singing teasing songs and trying to raise their flag over the village, while the women of Barsana drive them off with long lathis, the men shielding themselves with leather shields. It is all in joyful play, a living re-enactment of the divine banter of Radha and Krishna and the next day the tables turn, as the men of Barsana go to Nandgaon for its own Lathmar Holi.
