Mathura and Vrindavan: how the two cities differ

It helps to understand the two cities before you set out, for though they are close and always seen together, they are different in character. Mathura is the birthplace of Krishna, an ancient and busy city on the banks of the Yamuna, the older and grander of the two, with its sacred birthplace, its old riverside ghats, its great city temples and its long history reaching back thousands of years. Vrindavan, about twelve kilometres away, is the forest land where the child and youth Krishna played and danced and loved, a town wholly given over to temples, quieter and more purely devotional, thick with shrines old and new, from the ancient Goswami temples to the great modern marvels. Mathura is the city of Krishna’s birth and majesty; Vrindavan is the town of his play and sweetness. Tourist places in Mathura

Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, holds some of the holiest and most historic sights in all of Braj. These are the great tourist places of the city.

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi. The holiest site of Mathura and the very reason of its fame: the sacred prison cell where Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva. A grand temple complex marks the birthplace and to stand at the Garbha Griha, the birth chamber, is the heart of any Mathura pilgrimage.

Dwarkadhish Temple. The grand and beloved temple of the old city, near the Yamuna, dedicated to Krishna as the Lord of Dwarka, built in the nineteenth century, famed for its fine carving and its joyful festivals and the chief living temple of Mathura city.

Vishram Ghat. The chief and holiest of Mathura’s twenty five ghats on the Yamuna, where Krishna is said to have rested after slaying the tyrant Kansa. The evening aarti here, with its lamps upon the river, is one of the loveliest sights in Braj.

Birla Mandir, the Gita Mandir. A beautiful red sandstone temple on the Vrindavan road, famous for having the whole Bhagavad Gita engraved upon its walls, a place of worship and of wisdom together.

Kans Qila and the old city. The old fort of Kansa on the Yamuna and the ancient lanes of Mathura with their many Shiva and Devi temples, such as the Bhuteshwar Mahadev and the Gayatri Tapobhumi, for those who wish to go deeper into the old city.

Tourist places in Vrindavan

Vrindavan, the land of Krishna’s play, is a town of a thousand temples, from the ancient to the magnificently modern. These are its great tourist places.

Banke Bihari Temple. The most beloved and most thronged temple of Vrindavan, whose enchanting deity of Banke Bihari is revealed and hidden by a curtain drawn at intervals, so that no devotee may gaze too long. The heart of Vrindavan’s devotion.

Prem Mandir. The dazzling modern temple of white Italian marble, set in gardens with musical fountains, its walls carved with the pastimes of Radha and Krishna, breathtaking by day and gloriously lit by night. A must for every visitor.

ISKCON Temple, Krishna Balaram Mandir. The famous temple of the Hare Krishna movement, a place of beautiful deities, joyous kirtan and international devotion, with the samadhi of its founder Srila Prabhupada.

Nidhivan. The mysterious and sacred grove where, it is believed, Krishna comes each night to dance the Raas with Radha and the gopis, its trees strangely twined, its secret guarded. One of the most atmospheric places in all of Braj.

The old Goswami temples. The ancient seven temples established by the Goswami saints, the Radha Raman, the Radha Damodar, the Gopinath, the Madan Mohan and their sisters, the true historic heart of Vrindavan, quieter and deeply holy. And the grand Rangji temple of the southern style and the Shah Ji temple of the twisted pillars.

Keshi Ghat and the Yamuna. The most beautiful ghat of Vrindavan, on the Yamuna, where Krishna slew the demon horse Keshi, lovely at the hour of the evening aarti.

Beyond the two cities: the wider Braj

The pilgrimage of Krishna does not end at Mathura and Vrindavan, for the wider land of Braj holds more of the holiest places, close enough to be joined to a trip. My own Gokul and Mahaban, across the Yamuna, are the land of Krishna’s infancy, of Nand Bhavan and Raman Reti. Govardhan, the sacred hill that Krishna lifted, is circled on its great parikrama. And Barsana and Nandgaon, the villages of Radha and of Krishna’s boyhood home, hold the hill temples and the famous Lathmar Holi. How many days do you need?

How long to give depends on how much you wish to see. In a single long day you can see the highlights of both cities, the Janmabhoomi and a ghat in Mathura and the Banke Bihari, the Prem Mandir and the ISKCON in Vrindavan, though it will be rushed. Two days lets you see both cities properly, with time for the old temples and an unhurried evening aarti. Three days, the ideal, adds Gokul and Govardhan and perhaps Barsana, the whole heart of Braj. For most pilgrims I recommend two to three days, which sees the two cities well without exhaustion. The table gives a sense of the plan.

When to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for a visit, pleasant for temple hopping and for the ghats and the great festivals fall in this happy season and around it. Janmashtami, the birthday of Krishna in the monsoon and Holi, the festival of colour in spring, are the most magnificent times, though also the most crowded; Radha Ashtami, Govardhan Puja and the devotional month of Kartik are all beautiful. The peak summer of May and June is very hot. For a calm visit the cool ordinary weeks are ideal; for the great spectacle, come for a festival and expect crowds. How to reach and get around

Mathura is well connected, with Mathura Junction a major railway station on the Delhi to Agra and Mumbai lines, about three to four hours from Delhi and an hour from Agra; the nearest airport is Agra, about sixty kilometres or Delhi, about a hundred and fifty, by the smooth Yamuna Expressway. Vrindavan lies about twelve to fifteen kilometres from Mathura, joined by good road. Within and between the two, a private car with a driver is by far the easiest way, letting you move between the cities and the temples at your own pace; within the old towns, the narrow lanes are walked or taken by cycle and e rickshaw. The honest bit

Honest words for both cities, from one born here. Darshan everywhere in Mathura and Vrindavan is free and no official VIP pass exists at Banke Bihari or anywhere in Braj, whatever a tout may promise; be wary of anyone selling one. The Yamuna is revered as a goddess and, honestly, is polluted, so honour her with aachman but do not take a careless full dip. At Banke Bihari beware the crush on festival days and weekends and keep a firm hold of children and belongings. The old town lanes of both cities are narrow, so use a rickshaw or walk, not a large car. Temples keep long midday breaks, so plan by their hours. And take your time: these two cities hold more than can be rushed in a day and it is far better to see a little with a loving heart than to gallop through it all. Come in the cool season, plan by the temple timings and Mathura and Vrindavan will give you one of the deepest journeys in all of India.
