Loi Bazaar: the heart of Vrindavan shopping

Loi Bazaar is the great market of Vrindavan, a warren of narrow lanes near Banke Bihari packed with tiny shops. It is where pilgrims come for the things of devotion: the little dresses and ornaments for home Krishna idols, in which this bazaar specialises above all and prayer beads, brass and metal deities, devotional books, incense and the small brass and copper items of daily worship. It is crowded, colourful and cheap and half the pleasure is simply threading the lanes. No car can enter, so you walk, which is how the old bazaar is meant to be seen.

Mathura peda and the sweets

Mathura is famous across India for its peda, the dense milk sweet and no visit is complete without carrying a box home. You will find it everywhere, but quality varies, so buy from an established, busy shop rather than a stall at a temple gate and buy it fresh and near the end of your trip so it travels well. The other Braj sweets, the thick creamy rabri, jalebi and the rest, are best eaten on the spot rather than carried. This is genuine local produce and it makes the most loved gift of all from Braj.

Deity dresses and devotional shopping

If there is one thing Vrindavan’s market is known for above all, it is the poshak, the little dresses and ornaments made for home Krishna deities. Devotees who keep a Krishna idol at home dress it lovingly, changing its clothes with the seasons and the festivals and Loi Bazaar has whole shops of nothing but these tiny garments, in every colour and fabric, along with the crowns, jewellery and accessories that go with them. For a devotee this is the most meaningful purchase in Braj and even a visitor is charmed by the care and craft of it. Alongside them you find the tulsi bead malas for chanting and the brass deities themselves.

How to shop well: bargaining and honesty

A few practical words. Bargaining is expected in the bazaar lanes, so do it, but gently and with good humour; these are small traders, not a tourist bazaar and a fair price fairly reached is the spirit of it. Prices are modest to begin with. For anything of value, a brass idol, a good bead mala, compare a few shops before buying. Be a little wary around the temple gates, where prices rise and pressure is higher; the deeper lanes are cheaper and calmer. And carry cash in small notes, since the little shops run on it, though many now take digital payment too.

A word of honesty on the markets

Two honest cautions, because they matter here. First, around the famous temples you will be offered all manner of special prasad, blessed items and services at inflated prices and told they are essential; they are not and darshan and the temple’s own prasad are free, so buy your keepsakes in the ordinary shops, not under pressure at the gate. Second and I say this plainly, no one at any market or temple can sell you a VIP darshan pass or special access, because no such official thing exists anywhere in Braj, whatever a shopkeeper or tout may claim. The lovely thing about Braj is that the shopping needs no separate time; the lanes of Loi Bazaar are on your very way to and from the Banke Bihari temple and Mathura’s sweet shops cluster near Vishram Ghat and the Krishna Janmabhoomi. So you shop as you walk between darshans, picking up the peda and the beads along the way and buy the deity dresses on your last morning to carry home fresh. When the markets are busiest

The bazaars follow the pilgrims, so they are busiest in the cool season from October to March and around the great festivals, above all Janmashtami and Holi, when Loi Bazaar overflows and the deity dress shops do their greatest trade. That is a wonderful time to see them alive with colour, though a hard time to move through the lanes.
