When to visit Vrindavan

The cooler months of October to March are the most comfortable, with pleasant days for walking the temples and lanes. Kartik, in autumn, is the most devotional month of all and the great festivals, Janmashtami, Radha Ashtami, Holi and Sharad Purnima, are magnificent but very crowded. Summers are hot and quieter, the monsoon humid. Our full guide to the best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan lays out the seasons and the festival dates.

How to reach Vrindavan

Vrindavan sits about 150 kilometres from Delhi on the Yamuna Expressway, roughly three hours by road and about 55 to 65 kilometres from Agra. The nearest major railway station is Mathura Junction, about twelve to fifteen kilometres away and the nearest airports are Delhi and Agra. A private taxi is the most comfortable way, coming door to door; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service covers the drive and the local travel.

Where to stay in Vrindavan

Where you stay shapes your mornings. Staying near Banke Bihari and central Vrindavan lets you walk to the calm morning darshan; staying a little out is cheaper but adds travel. Options run from simple dharamshalas and guesthouses to comfortable hotels and the ISKCON guesthouse is a well loved choice. Compare areas on our Mathura Vrindavan hotels page.

What to see in Vrindavan

The heart of Vrindavan is its temples. Banke Bihari is the most beloved; ISKCON's Krishna Balaram compound is calm and welcoming; Prem Mandir is a marble wonder after dark; Nidhivan is the atmospheric grove of the nightly raas; and Keshi Ghat is the Yamuna at its most beautiful. Beyond these lie the old Goswami temples, Radha Raman and Radha Vallabh among them. Our guide to the places to visit in Vrindavan gives the full list and the walking order and our guide to Banke Bihari covers its timings and the calm way in.

How many days do you need

One day covers the essentials of Vrindavan at a rush; two days is the sweet spot, letting you add Mathura and Gokul; three days open the wider Braj of Govardhan and Barsana or Agra and the Taj. A shorter trip done slowly beats a long one rushed. Our honest guide to how many days you really need helps you decide.

How to plan your trip

Planning a Vrindavan trip is simple in the right order: choose your season, decide your days, plan how to reach and where to stay, pick what to see, set a budget and book. Our step by step guide to planning your perfect trip to Vrindavan walks you through each stage.

Food and local experiences

Braj is vegetarian and its food is part of the pilgrimage: simple local thalis, kachoris and the famous sweets of the region, from pedas to malpua. Beyond the food, the local experiences are what stay with you: the evening Yamuna aarti at the ghats, the samaj gayan in the ashrams and the worn lanes alive with the chant of Radhe Radhe. Leave room for these; they are the soul of a visit.

Festivals in Vrindavan

Vrindavan's festivals are extraordinary. Janmashtami celebrates Krishna's birth; Radha Ashtami honours Radha; Holi here is famous and intense, spread over many days; and Sharad Purnima and Kartik fill the town with lamps and pilgrims. They are magnificent but very crowded, so book far ahead and start your days earlier than you think.

Local tips for a smooth visit

A few local habits change everything. Arrive at the morning opening on a weekday for the calmest darshan. Carry small cash, as cards are little used. Guard your belongings from the monkeys and in the crowds. Dress modestly and wear footwear you can slip off. And pay no one for darshan or a VIP pass, because it is all free. Our full guide of real travel tips from local experience has the rest.

The honest bit

The truth is your best companion here. Darshan is free at every temple in Vrindavan; no one should charge you to enter or for a special view and there is no official VIP darshan pass for Banke Bihari, whatever the touts say. Banke Bihari has no daily Mangala Aarti, only rare festival days, while ISKCON holds a genuine one each morning. Nidhivan’s night raas is a cherished belief, not a documented fact. The Yamuna is deeply revered and, honestly, polluted. Met plainly, Vrindavan gives more than any embellishment could.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar and I have guided Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews. We WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. This written guide gives you the whole picture; a local companion on the ground gives you the rest, the right temple at the right hour, the quiet places and not a rupee lost to a tout. From your first question to your last darshan, we are your companion in Vrindavan, because this is our home.

Tip from Gurudutt: read this guide once before you come and let the details go. Then simply be early each morning and unhurried each evening. A prepared mind and an unhurried heart are all Vrindavan really asks of you.

"We booked the 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package with Experience My India after speaking with Gurudutt ji, and it turned out to be one of the best spiritual trips our family has ever taken. Every arrangement was exactly as promised. The hotel was close to the temples, the cab was clean and comfortable, and the driver was extremely courteous. Thanks to their local guidance, we had peaceful darshan at Banke Bihari Temple and Prem Mandir without spending hours in queues. If you're looking for a reliable travel company for Braj, this is the one to trust."
