I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Though Braj is Krishna's own land, Hanuman is beloved here as everywhere, and his Jayanti is kept with great devotion at the region's temples. Everything below is drawn from a life lived among these festivals, so you can observe Hanuman Jayanti 2027 with the right date, the right understanding, and, if you wish, in the sacred setting of Braj.

The significance of Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman, the vanara hero of the Ramayana and the supreme example of devotion, or bhakti. The son of Anjana and Kesari and of the wind god Vayu, and revered as an incarnation of Rudra, a form of Lord Shiva, Hanuman is worshipped for his boundless strength, courage, humility and unwavering love for Sri Rama. To his devotees he is the remover of troubles and fears, the protector who grants strength and steadfastness. Many call the day Hanuman Janmotsava rather than Jayanti, since Hanuman is a chiranjivi, one of the immortals, ever-living rather than born and gone.

The story of Hanuman's birth

The birth of Hanuman is one of the loveliest tales of the tradition. His mother Anjana, a celestial apsara born on earth, prayed long and devoutly for a child. As part of a sacred rite, a portion of the blessed offering meant for the queens of Ayodhya was carried by the wind god Vayu to Anjana, and by that grace Hanuman was born, part-divine, a child of the wind. As an infant, mistaking the rising sun for a ripe fruit, he leapt into the sky to seize it, a sign of the astonishing strength and fearlessness that would one day serve Rama. It is this divine birth that Hanuman Jayanti joyfully commemorates.

How Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated

Hanuman Jayanti is held with fervour at Hanuman temples across India, from dawn. Devotees rise early, bathe, and gather for special worship, and the air fills with the sound of Hanuman's praises. The common observances are these:

  • Recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, the forty verses in Hanuman's praise, often many times over.

  • Reading of the Sundarkand, the Ramayana chapter that tells of Hanuman's great deeds.

  • Special aartis and abhishekam at Hanuman temples, from the early morning.

  • Offerings of sindoor (vermilion) and oil, recalling how Hanuman smeared sindoor for Rama's long life, along with boondi, laddoo and other prasad.

  • Processions, bhajan and kirtan, and for many a fast is broken after the darshan.

  • Charity and the feeding of the needy, a fitting act on the day of the selfless servant.

Many devotees also arrange a special pooja on this day; we can help arrange pooja and seva at the temples of Braj for those who wish.

Regional variations: when Hanuman Jayanti is observed

One of the interesting things about Hanuman Jayanti is that it is not kept on the same day everywhere. The North Indian date of Chaitra Purnima is the most widely known, but the south and other regions follow their own traditions and calendars.

Hanuman Jayanti in Braj

Braj is Krishna's land above all, but Hanuman is honoured here with deep love, and his Jayanti is kept at the Hanuman temples of Mathura, Vrindavan and the surrounding country. On the day, these temples hold special aartis, the Hanuman Chalisa and Sundarkand ring out, and devotees offer sindoor and prasad. For pilgrims visiting Braj around the date, it is a beautiful time to add Hanuman darshan to the darshan of Krishna. Note that there is a lovely thread here: Hanuman is revered as a form of Rudra, so a visit to Gopeshwar Mahadev, the guardian Shiva of Vrindavan, sits naturally alongside the day.

Visiting Braj around Hanuman Jayanti 2027

If you wish to be in Braj for Hanuman Jayanti 2027, plan for warmth: 20 April falls at the start of the hot Braj summer, so the days are already fierce. Take your darshan in the cool early morning and rest through midday. While here, you can also take in Krishna's own temples, the beloved Banke Bihari and the Krishna Janmabhoomi, his birthplace in Mathura. For the seasons in full, see our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide, and the wider calendar on our Mathura Vrindavan festivals page.

Tips for observing Hanuman Jayanti

  • Rise early; the day's worship traditionally begins at dawn.

  • Keep the Hanuman Chalisa and Sundarkand ready to recite, at home or the temple.

  • Offer sindoor, oil, and boondi or laddoo prasad at the Hanuman temple.

  • If observing a fast, plan a simple satvik meal to break it after darshan.

  • If visiting Braj, take darshan in the cool morning, as 20 April is already hot.

  • Consider a charitable act or feeding the needy, in the spirit of the selfless Hanuman.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. The North Indian date, Tuesday 20 April 2027, is the most widely observed, but do remember that the south and other regions keep Hanuman Jayanti on quite different days, so check your own tradition. Tithi timings are refined by the panchang closer to the date, so treat the times here as a firm guide and confirm nearer the day. And if you plan to visit Braj for it, be honest with yourself about the heat, for 20 April is the start of a fierce summer here; an early start and a good rest through midday make all the difference. If you would rather stay overnight, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, and I help pilgrims keep the festivals of Braj every year. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. For Hanuman Jayanti and every sacred day, we arrange your darshan and pooja, meet you at Mathura Junction or Delhi, take you to the temples in the right order and at the right hour, and tell you the stories on the ground, with no touts. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: if Hanuman Jayanti draws you to Braj, weave it into a fuller pilgrimage. Take Hanuman's darshan in the cool dawn, then spend the day in Krishna's land, Banke Bihari, the Yamuna, the groves of Vrindavan, and you honour both the devotee and the Lord he served. Hanuman himself would wish you to end the day at Krishna's feet.

"“Our Hanuman Jayanti trip to Braj with Experience My India was beautifully planned. We wanted to experience the festival as devotees rather than simply visit tourist places, and the team understood that immediately. They helped arrange the darshan and pooja and then planned our Vrindavan temples around it. The information about the festival and the importance of early morning visits was genuinely useful. Clean car, on-time service and very helpful local guidance. We came back very happy and will definitely book our next Mathura Vrindavan tour with them.”"

"“We booked a Mathura Vrindavan tour package with Experience My India around Hanuman Jayanti and had a wonderful experience. Gurudutt's team gave us practical advice about visiting the temples early because of the April heat. The driver was polite, the vehicle was comfortable and we never had to worry about finding the right temples or parking. We especially enjoyed the peaceful morning darshan and the visit to Gopeshwar Mahadev. Highly recommended for a Braj pilgrimage.”"
