Diwali night in Mathura and Vrindavan
On the main Diwali night, Sunday, November 8, 2026, homes and temples across Braj perform the Lakshmi Puja in the evening and light rows upon rows of lamps. The great temples, above all the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan and the shrines around the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura, are decorated and blaze with light and the Yamuna ghats such as Kesi Ghat glow with deepdaan, the offering of countless little lamps set adrift or lit along the water. This falls in Kartik, the holiest month of the Braj year, so the whole town is at its most luminous. The day before, Narak Chaturdashi, remembers Krishna's slaying of the demon Narakasura, tying even the lamps of Diwali to the Lord of Braj.
Govardhan Puja and the Annakut
If there is one day that makes Braj's Diwali unlike any other, it is Govardhan Puja, on Monday, November 9, 2026, the day after the main Diwali. It celebrates the day Krishna lifted Giriraj Govardhan on his little finger to shelter Braj from Indra's storm and it is kept with the Annakut, the mountain of food: dozens, even a hundred and eight, of dishes cooked and offered to the deities in gratitude, then shared as prasad. At Govardhan itself the parikrama and the temples are thronged; and across the region, from the ISKCON Krishna Balaram temple to every neighbourhood shrine, the Annakut is offered with great love. Small hills of cow dung shaped like Govardhan are worshipped and the cows of Braj are honoured. It is the spiritual heart of Diwali in the land of Krishna.
Bhai Dooj at Vishram Ghat, Mathura
The festival closes on Bhai Dooj, also called Yama Dwitiya, on Tuesday, November 10, 2026 and Mathura holds the most sacred of all its observances. For it was here, in the tradition, that the river-goddess Yamuna or Yami, lovingly hosted and fed her brother Yamraj, the lord of death, at Vishram Ghat and Yamraj blessed that any brother and sister who bathe together in the Yamuna at Vishram Ghat on this day would be freed from the fear of death. And so, every Bhai Dooj, brothers and sisters come from far to bathe together at Vishram Ghat, tie the rakhi-like tilak and share sweets, in one of the most touching and distinctive traditions in all of Braj. It is a Bhai Dooj you can see nowhere else.
Kartik: the holiest month
All of this falls within Kartik, the most sacred month of the Braj calendar, when the whole region is given to worship: the daily deepdaan of lamps on the Yamuna, the Kartik snan or holy bath, the parikramas and countless festivals. To come to Braj at Diwali is to come in the very peak of its devotional year, when the lamps never seem to go out. Tips for visiting Braj at Diwali
Book your stay and car weeks ahead; Diwali and Govardhan Puja are peak season.
Keep Govardhan Puja, November 9, for the Annakut and the Govardhan parikrama.
Come to Vishram Ghat, Mathura, on Bhai Dooj, November 10, for the sibling bath.
Reconfirm the Lakshmi Puja muhurat for your city; it varies a little by place.
Celebrate green: prefer oil-lamp deepdaan and avoid loud, polluting crackers.
The honest bit
Honest words on Diwali in Braj, from one born here. It is one of the most beautiful times to visit, but also one of the busiest, so the crowds at Govardhan on Annakut and at Vishram Ghat on Bhai Dooj are enormous; book your stay and car well in advance and keep your plans early in the day. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat given for the region is an evening window that shifts by city, so reconfirmed locally. Temple darshan is free and there is no VIP pass, whatever anyone claims in the festival rush. Please celebrate kindly to the town and the Yamuna, with lamps rather than heavy fireworks. For a stay, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels and our guide on where to stay in Vrindavan. Come with patience and devotion and Braj's Diwali will stay with you for life.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I know the temples, ghats and festival days of Braj as my own. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. At Diwali, when the crowds are heaviest, this matters most: we bring the car to the right gates, the darshans and the Annakut and the Vishram Ghat bath in the right order and the right hours, around the crush, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan. To plan your days, see our guide on how to plan a Mathura and Vrindavan trip.
Tip from Gurudutt: if you can give Braj three days at Diwali, do it. Spend Diwali night among the lamps of Vrindavan and the deepdaan on the Yamuna; give the next day to Govardhan for the Annakut and the parikrama; and close with the sibling bath at Vishram Ghat on Bhai Dooj. Go early each day, before the great crowds and let a local drive and guide you through the rush. Taken this way, you see the three faces of Braj's Diwali, light, gratitude and love and no festival elsewhere will feel quite the same again.
