Kartik Snan, the holy bath of the sacred month of Kartika, is one of the most meritorious of all devotional observances, a month-long discipline of bathing before sunrise in a sacred river and worshipping Lord Vishnu. Kartik is the holiest month of the Hindu year, especially dear to Vaishnavas and in Krishna's Braj, where the bath is taken in the sacred Yamuna, it is observed with the deepest devotion. In 2026, Kartik Snan runs from Saturday, 24 October to Tuesday, 24 November, ending on Kartik Purnima. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to Kartik Snan 2026: the dates, the bathing window and the significance. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

  • Kartik Snan 2026 runs from Saturday, 24 October to Tuesday, 24 November 2026.

  • It culminates in the great final bath on Kartik Purnima (Dev Deepawali), 24 November 2026.

  • The holy dip is taken pre-dawn, in the Brahma Muhurta (ideally about 4:30 to 6:30 AM).

  • It is taken in a sacred river, the Yamuna, Ganga or Narmada, daily through the month or on Purnima.

  • Kartik celebrates Vishnu's awakening from his cosmic sleep (on Devuthani Ekadashi).

  • Kartik Purnima marks Shiva's victory over Tripurasura, kept as Dev Deepawali.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Kartik is the most sacred and beautiful month in all of Braj, the month of the Damodar form of Krishna, of the Yamuna snan at dawn and of lamps floated on the river each evening. Here I give you the essentials for Kartik Snan 2026: the dates, the bathing window, the significance and how to keep it in Krishna's own land.

The Kartik snan is taken in the Brahma Muhurta, the sacred pre-dawn hours before sunrise, which is held to be the most auspicious time of the whole day for spiritual practice. The holy dip is ideally taken daily through the month of Kartika or, for those who cannot keep it every day, at least on the key days and above all on the final Kartik Purnima.

The significance of Kartik Snan

The Kartik snan carries deep and manifold significance:

  • Cleansing of sins: bathing before sunrise in a sacred river during Kartik is believed to wash away past misdeeds and purify the soul.

  • Lord Vishnu's awakening: the month celebrates Vishnu waking from his four-month cosmic sleep (Chaturmas), on Devuthani Ekadashi, so worship of him in Kartik is especially fruitful.

  • Lord Shiva's victory: Kartik Purnima marks the day Shiva destroyed the demon Tripurasura, kept as Dev Deepawali, the 'Diwali of the gods', when the ghats are lit with earthen lamps.

  • Immense merit: a holy dip in this period, above all on the final full moon, is said to grant spiritual grace comparable to performing the grandest ancient sacrifices (yajnas).

Why Kartik is the holiest month in Braj

Of all the months, Kartik (also called Damodar maas) is the dearest to Vaishnavas and nowhere is it kept with more love than in Krishna's Braj. It is the month in which, as a child, Krishna allowed his mother Yashoda to bind him with a rope to a grinding mortar, his Damodar leela and so the whole month is devoted to the Damodar form of the Lord, with the singing of the Damodarashtakam and the offering of lamps to Krishna each evening. Pilgrims from all over the world come to spend the whole of Kartik in Vrindavan, taking the dawn Yamuna snan, keeping vratas and offering deepdaan (lamps) at the ghats, so that the holy town is at its most devotional and most beautiful through the month.

Kartik Snan in the Yamuna at Mathura and Vrindavan

In Braj, the sacred river of the Kartik snan is the Yamuna, Krishna's own river and, by tradition, the daughter of the Sun. To take the pre-dawn dip in the Yamuna during Kartik, at the holy ghats, is deeply auspicious. The chief places are Vishram Ghat in Mathura, the holiest of the Yamuna ghats and the lovely Kesi Ghat in Vrindavan. After the dawn bath, devotees take the darshan of the temples, including the beloved Banke Bihari, lit and joyful through the month and in the evening offer lamps to the Yamuna and the Lord. To keep even a few days of Kartik snan in Braj is a blessing many pilgrims treasure above all others.

Dev Deepawali and Kartik Purnima: the great final bath

The month of Kartik snan reaches its climax on Kartik Purnima, 24 November 2026, the final and greatest holy bath. This full-moon day is kept as Dev Deepawali, the 'Diwali of the gods', celebrating Shiva's victory over Tripurasura; on this night the ghats of the sacred rivers are lit with thousands of earthen lamps, a breathtaking sight and the deepdaan (lamp offering) is at its grandest. In Braj, the Yamuna ghats glow with lamps and the final Kartik Purnima snan at dawn is held to grant the fullest merit of the whole month. It is a magnificent close to the holiest month of the year. See the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar for the Kartik observances.

Tips for Kartik Snan 2026

  • Take the dip in the pre-dawn Brahma Muhurta (about 4:30 to 6:30 AM), the most auspicious time.

  • Keep it daily through the month if you can or at least on Kartik Purnima (24 November).

  • In Braj, bathe in the Yamuna at Vishram Ghat or Kesi Ghat, then take temple darshan.

  • Offer deepdaan (lamps) at the ghats in the evening, especially on Dev Deepawali.

  • The pre-dawn November air and water are cold, so bathe with care, especially elders and children.

  • To keep Kartik in Braj, book your stay early, as the whole month is a peak, crowded season.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. Kartik snan is among the most beautiful and meritorious of observances, but a couple of honest notes. It is a pre-dawn bath in late autumn and by Kartik Purnima in late November the Braj mornings and the Yamuna water are genuinely cold, so bathe with care, keep it short and warm up after; the elderly, the unwell and young children should take special care or keep a gentler observance, for the Lord looks at the devotion, not the hardship. On the timings, the exact tithi of Kartik Purnima and the sunrise shift a little by place and source, so confirm locally nearer the time. And remember the heart of it: the Kartik snan is not mere bathing but a daily turning of the whole self, before dawn, towards the Lord. Kept with devotion and good sense, especially in Braj, it is a month that can change the soul.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, where Kartik is the holiest and most beloved month. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. For a Kartik visit we bring you to the Yamuna ghats for the pre-dawn snan, arrange your deepdaan and puja, guide you through the lamp-lit temples, plan the Dev Deepawali of Kartik Purnima and look after you in the cold dawns, with a local's care and no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: if you can, spend even a few days of Kartik in Braj, for there is no holier month in no holier place. Rise before dawn and come to the Yamuna, where Krishna himself played and take the cold, clean dip in the dark before the sun; then, as the light comes, take the darshan of the Lord in the lamp-lit temples; and at dusk, float a lamp of your own upon the river, among the thousands and sing of Damodar. To keep the Kartik snan in the Yamuna of Braj, in the month of Krishna's own Damodar leela, is to touch the very heart of devotion and to carry its light home with you for the year.
