The history and legend of Vishram Ghat

Vishram Ghat takes its name and its sanctity from one of the great moments of Krishna's story. When Krishna, grown to a youth, returned to Mathura and slew the cruel tyrant Kansa, his uncle, who had killed so many and sought his own death, it was here on the banks of the Yamuna that the Lord is said to have rested afterwards, vishram meaning rest. And so this became Vishram Ghat, the ghat of the Lord's repose, the most sacred of all Mathura's ghats. For this reason it has been the heart of the city's worship for centuries and the natural centre of its pilgrimages.

The hub of the parikramas

Vishram Ghat is not only a place of bathing and aarti; it is the sacred hub of Mathura's parikramas. Both the great 84-kos Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra, which circles the whole of Braj and the local 3 km Mathura city parikrama traditionally begin and end here at Vishram Ghat. Pilgrims take a holy dip and a sankalp here before setting out and return here to complete the circle. So the ghat is the very starting point of the sacred journeys of Braj, adding to its central importance.

The Yamuna aarti and its timings

The great daily event at Vishram Ghat is the evening Yamuna aarti, the Sandhya Aarti, one of the most beautiful sights in Mathura. Priests raise great tiered lamps of fire to the Mother Yamuna as bells ring, conches sound and the gathered devotees sing, while little leaf-boats of flowers and flame drift on the water. The evening aarti is the one not to miss; come a little early to find a good place on the steps. You can also attend the aarti from the water, in a shared or private boat, a wonderful vantage as the whole ghat glows.

Boat rides on the Yamuna

A boat ride from Vishram Ghat is one of the joys of Mathura. Scenic boats take you along the Yamuna, past the surrounding twenty-five local ghats, for a peaceful view of the riverside and its temples and cost roughly ₹60 to ₹150 per person, depending on the boat and the season. The loveliest rides are at sunrise, when the river is calm and the light golden and at dusk around the aarti, when you may watch the lamps from the water. Agree the fare and whether it is a shared or private boat before you set off; a private boat for the evening aarti is a beautiful, unhurried way to witness it.

Vishram Ghat sits at the heart of old Mathura, ringed by historic temples. Right beside it stand the Mukut Mandir and the Murli Manohar temple and a short walk away is the grand Dwarkadhish temple, Mathura's great city temple, only about 500 m off. The Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace of the Lord, lies about 2 km away. So Vishram Ghat is best visited together with the old-city temples, an easy and rewarding cluster. Timings, location and how to reach

Vishram Ghat is open 24 hours a day, every day and entry is completely free. It lies at Chhonka Pada, Choubey Para, in the old city of Mathura (281001), about 4 km from Mathura Junction and 2.8 km from the local bus stand. Because the old-city lanes around it are narrow, cars cannot reach the ghat itself, so you are dropped nearby and walk or take an auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw the last stretch. A Mathura Vrindavan taxi with a local driver makes reaching the ghat and the old-city temples simple and we can arrange a boat and any pooja and seva.

The night view and the best time to visit

Vishram Ghat is at its most magical at night, during and after the evening aarti, when the whole riverside glows with the great lamps, the little floating diyas drift on the dark water and the temples along the ghat are lit. It is one of the loveliest night views in Mathura. The cool months of October to March are the most pleasant for a visit and the ghat is especially sacred and vibrant during Bhai Dooj and Yamuna Chhath, its great festivals. • Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early to find a place on the steps.

• Take a boat ride at sunrise for calm and light or at dusk to see the aarti from the water.

• Agree the boat fare (₹60 to ₹150 per person) and shared-or-private before you set off.

• Pair the ghat with the Dwarkadhish temple (500 m) and Krishna Janmabhoomi (2 km).

• Wear easy shoes for the steps and old lanes and mind the wet stone and the monkeys.

Vishram Ghat is beautiful and deeply sacred, one of the finest riverside scenes in Braj, but come knowing it is a busy, living ghat, not a manicured monument: the steps and lanes are crowded, especially at the aarti and the monkeys are bold, so keep your things and your phone safe. The aarti timing shifts a little with the sunset and season, so confirm it for the day. The river's cleanliness varies, so take a dip with that in mind. And agree boat fares first and beware anyone selling paid VIP access, for the ghat and its aarti are free and open to all. Come at dawn or for the evening aarti, with a little care and Vishram Ghat will give you one of the most peaceful and moving hours in all of Mathura.
