What is Koyla Ghat?

Koyla Ghat, spelled variously Koile Ghat or Koiley Ghat, is one of the many ancient ghats on the banks of the Yamuna in the Mathura area of Braj, the stone steps leading down to the sacred river. What sets it apart from the dozens of other historic ghats is the event it marks: this is held by local tradition to be the very place where Vasudeva, the father of Krishna, crossed the Yamuna carrying the newborn child to safety in Gokul on the night of Janmashtami. It is a quiet, restored ghat rather than a grand temple and its two gifts to the visitor are its beloved story and its view, for it is the finest point on the whole Yamuna in Braj. The story of Koyla Ghat: Vasudeva’s crossing

The story is the very beginning of Krishna’s life on earth. Krishna was born at midnight in the prison of the tyrant King Kansa in Mathura, the eighth child of Devaki and Vasudeva, for it had been foretold that this child would slay the king. On the night of his birth, by a miracle, the prison doors opened and the guards fell into sleep and Vasudeva took up the newborn and carried him out to bear him across the Yamuna to the safety of Gokul, to the home of Nanda Baba, where he would be raised in secret.

When Vasudeva reached the bank of the Yamuna, the river was in flood, rising and swirling. But the river goddess Yamuna, knowing whose feet were near her, rose higher still in her longing to touch the feet of the divine child. As the water climbed and the current pulled at him, Vasudeva, balancing the baby on his head, was overcome with fear that he would be swept away and he cried out, Koi le, Koi le, someone take him, begging that the child at least be saved. Then the infant Krishna lowered one foot and the moment the water of Yamuna touched the sole of his foot, she subsided and calmed and let Vasudeva pass safely across to Gokul. From that cry of Vasudeva, Koi le, the ghat has been known ever since as Koile Ghat, the ghat of Koyla.

The meaning of the name

The name of the ghat is the heart of its story and worth dwelling on. Koile or Koyla, comes directly from Vasudeva’s desperate cry on the flooding river, Koi le, which in the language of Braj means someone take him. It is a name born not of a place or a person but of a father’s single moment of fear and love for his child, frozen forever in the name of the ghat. To stand at Koyla Ghat knowing this is to stand where that cry rang out and it is why the place, quiet and little visited as it is, moves those who know its story so deeply.

The restored ghat and what you see

For long years the ghat lay in neglect, as many of the ancient Yamuna ghats of Braj sadly still do. It was restored by the Braj Foundation and in 2016, at the request of the local Koile Ghat preservation committee, they built here in concrete an impressive Sheshnag, the many hooded serpent, spreading its hood in protection over a figure of Vasudeva carrying the baby Krishna, recalling the serpent that is said to have sheltered the child from the rain on that very crossing. A small Yamuna Devi temple in red stone was added beside it. Today, then, the visitor finds not a ruin but a care for ghat with this striking image of the crossing and the little riverside shrine, a fitting marker for such a sacred spot. The finest Yamuna viewpoint in Braj

There is a second reason to come to Koyla Ghat and it is one even those who do not know the story can feel: it is, quite simply, the most beautiful viewpoint on the Yamuna in all of Braj. From this ghat you can see Gokul directly across the river, Vrindavan away to your left and Mathura to your right, the three great towns of Krishna’s birth, infancy and youth all visible from one spot on the water. No other point on the Yamuna in Braj gives such a view. And there is a wonder in it that fits the story: satellite maps reveal that this is indeed the place where the Yamuna is at its very narrowest in all its course through this region, the natural place, then, for a crossing, which only deepens the beauty of the old tradition.

Location and how to reach Koyla Ghat

Koyla Ghat lies on the Yamuna in the Mathura area of Uttar Pradesh, in the Braj region, on the stretch of river between Mathura and Gokul, which are about ten to twelve kilometres apart. Gokul lies directly across the water. It is a quiet, out of the way spot, not on the main temple circuit, so it is best reached by private car with a local who knows the riverside lanes, since it is not signposted for tourists and can be hard to find alone. When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the most pleasant for sitting by the river and taking in the view and the winter light on the Yamuna is especially lovely. The one supreme time, for those who can, is Janmashtami itself, the birth of Krishna in late summer, the very night of the crossing, when to stand at Koyla Ghat is to stand in the story as it is remembered across Braj.
