Knowing the leelas turns a tour into a pilgrimage.
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, in the heart of Braj, guiding pilgrims since 2018: more than 50,000 of them. A Mathura Vrindavan package tour is more than a list of temples; it is a journey through the leelas of Krishna, the divine pastimes of his life, each played out on ground you can still walk. When you follow the tour as the story of his life, temple by temple, it becomes a pilgrimage. This guide maps the leelas to the places, and shows how the package tour works. Krishna’s leelas and where to see them
The whole of Braj is a map of Krishna’s life. The table follows the leelas in the order they unfolded, and where a package tour takes you to each.
Krishna’s leelas and the places a Mathura Vrindavan package tour visits.
The leela | Where it happened | See on the tour |
His birth | Mathura, in the prison of Kansa | The Krishna Janmabhoomi |
Childhood and butter-stealing | Gokul | Nand Bhavan, Raman Reti |
Subduing the serpent Kaliya | The Yamuna at Vrindavan | Kaliya Ghat |
The raas with the gopis | Vrindavan | Nidhivan and Seva Kunj |
Lifting Govardhan hill | Govardhan | The Govardhan parikrama |
Slaying the tyrant Kansa | Mathura | Vishram Ghat |
Mathura: the birth and the end of Kansa
The tour begins where Krishna’s life began. At the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura, he was born at midnight in the prison of the tyrant Kansa, his uncle, who had sworn to kill him. Years later, returning as a youth, Krishna slew Kansa and freed the people, and rested afterwards at Vishram Ghat, whose name means the ghat of rest. To stand here is to stand at the beginning and the turning of the whole story.
Gokul: the childhood leelas
Carried across the Yamuna on the night of his birth, Krishna grew up in Gokul, my own home, in the care of Nanda and Yashoda. Here are the tender leelas the world loves best: the butter thief who raided the pots, the child who showed the universe in his mouth, the boy among the cows and cowherds. On the tour, Nand Bhavan and Raman Reti hold these tales. See our Gokul Mathura Vrindavan guide for more.
Vrindavan: the raas and the serpent
In Vrindavan the youthful leelas unfold. Here Krishna subdued the many-hooded serpent Kaliya in the Yamuna, dancing upon its heads, remembered at Kaliya Ghat. And here, in the groves, he danced the raas with the gopis, the dance of divine love, cherished at Nidhivan and Seva Kunj. The great temples of Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir and ISKCON all sing of these Vrindavan leelas.
Govardhan: the lifted hill
A short way from Vrindavan lies Govardhan, where Krishna performed one of his greatest leelas: to shelter the people from the wrath of Indra’s storm, he lifted the whole Govardhan hill upon his little finger, holding it as an umbrella for seven days. Pilgrims circle the hill in the Govardhan parikrama, and honour it, for it is never climbed. Many multi-day package tours include it.
How the package tour works
A package tour bundles the whole journey into one arrangement: a car, a Braj-born guide, the sightseeing and the darshan, and on multi-day tours a stay and breakfast, all for one clear fare. The duration decides how many leelas you follow:
● One day: the essentials of Mathura and Vrindavan; a Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour.
● Two days: adding Gokul’s childhood leelas; a 2 Days Gokul Mathura Vrindavan Tour.
● Three days or more: the fuller Braj with Govardhan; a 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Pilgrimage Tour.
Travel guide: timing and reaching
The best time for the tour is October to March, comfortable for the temples and the parikrama. Reach the region through Delhi, about 150 kilometres away, or Agra, or by train to Mathura Junction. Within Braj, a private car ties the leela sites together and waits at each; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service covers it. Start each day early for the calmest darshan, and our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide has the seasons.
The honest bit
Following the leelas honestly is the truest pilgrimage. Every darshan is free; no one should charge you for it or sell you a VIP pass, for there is no official VIP pass for Banke Bihari. Banke Bihari has no daily Mangala Aarti, only rare festival days, while ISKCON holds a genuine one. Nidhivan's raas is a cherished belief, not a documented fact. Govardhan is circled, never climbed. The Yamuna is revered and, honestly, polluted. The leelas are the most beautiful for being told truly.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar, on the very ground of the childhood leelas, and these stories were mine before I could read. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Anyone can drive a route; a Brajwasi can tell you which leela unfolded where, and let you feel it as you stand there. That is what turns a package tour into a pilgrimage. Our car is clean, our fare one clear number, our stories our own.
Tip from Gurudutt: follow the tour in the order of Krishna’s life, birth in Mathura, childhood in Gokul, youth in Vrindavan and Govardhan. Taken as the story unfolds, the leelas link into one journey, and the whole tour gains a meaning a scattered route never has.
