Pagal Baba Temple, part of the Pagal Baba Ashram, is a tall white shrine of several storeys, one of the landmarks of Vrindavan and visible from a good distance as you approach the town. It was built by the revered saint affectionately remembered as Pagal Baba, whose name means the mad one, a term of endearment in the tradition for a soul so absorbed in God as to seem mad to the ordinary world. What to see inside

The pleasure of Pagal Baba Temple is in the climb. Each floor sets out its tableaux, the dioramas of Krishna’s leelas and of scenes from the epics, worked in colour and detail, so that families move up slowly, floor by floor, reading the stories as they go. Children in particular are held by it in a way the quieter temples cannot manage. Near the top the building opens to views across Vrindavan, the temple spires, the town and the Yamuna beyond, one of the few high vantage points in a low town. How to reach

The temple is on the Mathura to Vrindavan Marg, the main road by which most visitors arrive from the Delhi highway, which makes it one of the easiest to reach and a natural first or last stop.
