I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 of them. Mathura sits at the heart of a land rich in sacred and beautiful places and many of the finest lie only a short drive away, easily seen as day trips from the city. The closest and holiest are the other towns of Braj, the land of Krishna; a little beyond lie Agra with its Taj Mahal and the old Rajasthan towns. Here is my complete guide to the best places to visit near Mathura, sorted by how far they lie, with the distances and how to reach each, told by someone born on this soil. Plan them with our Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package, message on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809, any day from 8 AM to 9 PM.

The Braj towns: the closest and holiest places near Mathura

The nearest and most sacred places to Mathura are the other towns of Braj, the land of Krishna, all within about fifty kilometres and all part of the one great pilgrimage. These are where most visitors to Mathura go first and rightly so.

Vrindavan, about 12 to 15 km. The closest and the most visited, the town of Krishna’s play, a place of a thousand temples, from the beloved Banke Bihari and the dazzling Prem Mandir to the mysterious Nidhivan and the ancient Goswami temples. Almost always seen together with Mathura.

Gokul and Mahaban, about 12 to 15 km. My own home, across the Yamuna, the land of Krishna’s infancy, of the Nand Bhavan, the Raman Reti sands and the sacred ghats, a quieter and deeply moving pilgrimage.

Govardhan, about 22 km. The sacred hill that Krishna lifted, circled by pilgrims on its twenty one kilometre parikrama, with its temples and holy kunds. One of the four great centres of Braj.

Barsana, about 42 to 50 km. The hilltop village of Radha, crowned by her temple on the Brahma hill, famous for the Lathmar Holi and the hill temples and passes such as the Sankari Khor.

Nandgaon, about 45 to 50 km. The village of Krishna’s boyhood home, where Nanda Baba settled, with the Nand Bhavan temple on its hill, paired with Barsana in the famous Holi.

Dauji, Baldeo, about 20 km. The temple of Balarama, Krishna’s elder brother, at Baldeo, famous for its Huranga Holi, a beloved and less crowded pilgrimage east of Mathura.

Agra and the Taj Mahal, about 60 km

The most famous place near Mathura, after the Braj towns, is Agra, about sixty kilometres away, an easy drive of an hour and a half by the Yamuna Expressway and a hugely popular day trip. There stands the Taj Mahal, the white marble wonder of the world, the monument of love raised by Shah Jahan for Mumtaz Mahal, one of the most beautiful buildings ever made; and near it the mighty Agra Fort of red sandstone, the seat of the Mughals and across the river the exquisite tomb of Itmad ud Daula, the little Taj. A day in Agra pairs wonderfully with a Mathura and Vrindavan pilgrimage and is very often added to it. Remember only that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays and that its entry ticket is paid separately to the government and is never part of a tour price. Our places to visit near the Taj Mahal guide covers Agra fully and the Delhi to Agra distance guide the wider route.

Rajasthan close by: Bharatpur and Deeg

To the west of Mathura, just across into Rajasthan, lie two lovely and less known places within an easy drive. Bharatpur, about forty kilometres, is famous for the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, a world heritage bird sanctuary, a paradise for birdwatchers in the winter when the migratory birds arrive and for its old fort and palaces. And Deeg, about forty to fifty kilometres, holds the beautiful Deeg Palace, a garden palace of the Jat rulers with its grand halls and its famous fountains, a peaceful and uncrowded delight. These make a fine change from the temples for those with an extra day and pair naturally with a Braj trip. Both are reached easily by car from Mathura.

A little further: Delhi and Jaipur

For those with more time, two great cities lie within a few hours of Mathura, more of a weekend than a day trip. Delhi, the capital, is about a hundred and fifty kilometres to the north by the expressway, three to four hours, with its Red Fort, its Qutub Minar, its Lotus Temple and its grand Akshardham. Jaipur, the pink city of Rajasthan, is about two hundred and forty kilometres to the west, four to five hours, with its Amber Fort, its Hawa Mahal and its palaces. Both are wonderful, but they are journeys in their own right rather than easy day trips from Mathura and are best given a stay of their own. For the pilgrim short of time, the nearby Braj towns and Agra are the better use of the days near Mathura.

How to plan your day trips

The wise way to see the places near Mathura is to plan by distance and by time. If you have only a day beyond the city, give it to Vrindavan and Gokul, the closest and holiest or to Agra and the Taj. With two or three days, add Govardhan and then Barsana and Nandgaon, the fuller Braj pilgrimage. With a spare day for a change from the temples, Bharatpur or Deeg is lovely. A private car with a driver who knows the roads is much the easiest way to see these scattered places, moving at your own pace and waiting where the buses do not. The table gives a sense of the plan by the time you have.

When to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for day trips near Mathura, pleasant for the temples, for the Govardhan parikrama, for Agra and above all for the Bharatpur bird sanctuary, which is at its finest in the winter when the migratory birds come. The great festivals of Braj, Janmashtami, Holi and the Lathmar Holi of Barsana and Nandgaon, fall in this season and around it and are magnificent, though crowded. The peak summer of May and June is very hot for both temples and monuments, so the cool season is much kinder. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide is the full year.

The honest bit

Honest words on the places near Mathura, from one born here. In Braj, darshan everywhere is free and no official VIP pass exists at Banke Bihari or anywhere in the land, whatever a tout may promise. At Agra, the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays and its ticket is paid separately to the government and should never be bundled into a tour price; beware anyone who claims otherwise. Govardhan is a sacred hill, circled on its parikrama and never climbed. The further places, Delhi and Jaipur, are real journeys, not day trips, so do not try to cram them into a Mathura visit. And do not attempt too much in a day: it is far better to see Vrindavan and Gokul well than to gallop to Agra and back exhausted. Plan by distance and by the cool of the season, agree your car fare in advance and the places near Mathura will richly reward you.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar, in the Mathura district and the whole of Braj and its neighbours are my own home ground. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. What a local brings to the day trips near Mathura is the sensible ordering of the scattered places so you see the most in your days without wasted driving, the timing around temple hours and the Taj’s Friday closure, the honest word on free darshan and the separate Taj ticket, the roads known and the car that waits and the stories of each place told on the ground. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: when you choose your day trips near Mathura, put the sacred Braj towns first, for they are the reason most pilgrims come and Vrindavan and my Gokul are only minutes away. Add Agra and the Taj if you have a day and love the great monuments, but do not let it crowd out the deeper pilgrimage of Braj. And keep one gentle day, if you can, for Govardhan or for the birds of Bharatpur, a lovely change of pace. See a few places well and with a loving heart and you will carry home far more than the hurried traveller who tries to see them all.

Rishikesh to Vrindavan Distance: Routes Both Ways, Driving Time, Trains and the Best Way to Travel

The distance from Rishikesh to Vrindavan is about 361 to 394 km, taking roughly 6.5 to 8.5 hours by road, depending on the route. The quickest ways use the expressways to skirt the Delhi traffic: the Eastern Peripheral Expressway route is the shortest at about 361 km and the route via the Yamuna Expressway is the fastest at under seven hours. Coming back, Vrindavan to Rishikesh is much the same, around 382 to 404 km. If you would rather not drive, a train from Rishikesh or nearby Haridwar to Mathura Junction, then a short drive on, works well. It is a beautiful journey joining the Ganga with the Yamuna.

Raman Reti in Vrindavan: Where It Really Is and How to Visit It from Vrindavan

Raman Reti is very often searched as being in Vrindavan, but it is actually in Gokul, near Mahavan, about 22 km from Vrindavan and 15 km from Mathura, in the wider Braj region. It is the stretch of soft, silvery sand where, in the tradition, the little Krishna and Balaram played and it is beautifully connected to Vrindavan, for it is said that Krishna met Radha here before they journeyed to Vrindavan together. Today it is a peaceful ashram with a deer sanctuary and the sacred sand on which devotees still roll. It is an easy 45-minute drive from Vrindavan.
