📌 QUICK ANSWER

Shri Dauji Maharaj Temple stands in Baldeo, about 18 to 20 kilometres south east of Mathura, and honours Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna, lovingly called Dauji. It is the great Balarama temple of Braj, with a black stone deity worshipped beside his consort Revati, and it is most famous for the Huranga, the boisterous colour play held the day after Holi. It opens morning, afternoon and evening, with a midday break. Darshan is free. To visit Dauji with a Braj-born guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 of them, and Baldeo is close enough to my own village to be familiar ground. Dauji Maharaj is the one great temple of Braj where Krishna is not the presiding deity: here it is his elder brother Balarama who is worshipped, and that alone makes it worth the short drive from Mathura. It is loved above all for the Huranga, but there is far more to it than the one famous day. Here are the timings, the history and how to reach it. To visit with us or add it to your trip with our Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package, message on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809, any day from 8 AM to 9 PM.

Who is Dauji Maharaj?

Dauji, or Dau, is the affectionate name Braj gives to Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna, born of the same parents and his constant companion in the childhood leelas. Where Krishna is dark, Balarama is fair; where Krishna carries the flute, Balarama carries the plough and the mace. He is worshipped as an incarnation in his own right, and in this temple he presides alongside his consort Revati. For the people of Braj he is the protective elder brother of the whole region, and Dauji is a deity of great strength and affection.

The temple and its deity

The deity of Dauji is a striking black stone image, around seven feet tall, held to be the largest Balarama murti in all of Braj, standing beside the smaller image of Revati. The tradition holds the deity to be swayambhu, self manifested, and recovered from a nearby kund long ago, and it is worshipped with the same devotion given to the great Krishna deities of the region. The temple itself is a substantial walled complex in the heart of Baldeo town, plainer than the marble marvels of Vrindavan but old, powerful and deeply loved by local pilgrims, who come to Dauji for his blessing and his protection.

Shri Dauji Maharaj Temple timings

The temple keeps three sessions through the day, with the doors closed between them while the deity rests. The hours below are the usual schedule; in the peak summer the morning opening can advance earlier, and festival days differ, so reconfirm on the day.

Shri Dauji Maharaj Temple darshan timings. Hours shift with the season and on festival days, so verify on the day.

The Huranga: Dauji’s great day

If Dauji is known for one thing beyond Braj, it is the Huranga. On the day after the main Holi, the temple courtyard becomes the stage for a boisterous, joyous play of colour between the men and the women of Baldeo: the women, in a celebrated reversal, tear the men’s clothing and drive them with soaked whips of cloth, while colour and song fill the whole complex. It draws great crowds and it is one of the most vivid Holi traditions in all of Braj, a cousin to the Lathmar Holi of Barsana and Nandgaon. It is magnificent, and it is genuinely rough and immensely crowded, so go for the spectacle rather than a gentle darshan, and not with small children. Our festivals of Braj page has the calendar.

Is Dauji temple in Vrindavan?

A quick word to clear up a common confusion, because many people search for a Dauji temple in Vrindavan. The great Dauji Maharaj temple is not in Vrindavan; it is in Baldeo, a town about 18 to 20 kilometres south east of Mathura, on the far side of the city from Vrindavan. There are smaller shrines to Balarama elsewhere in Braj, but the famous one, the one with the seven foot black deity and the Huranga, is at Baldeo. If you have read about Dauji and want to see him, it is Baldeo you are looking for.

Address and how to reach

The temple is in the heart of Baldeo town. The full address is Shri Dauji Maharaj Temple, Baldeo, Chhabirau, Uttar Pradesh 281301. It lies about 18 to 20 kilometres south east of Mathura city, roughly 40 minutes by road, and since Baldeo sits on the Agra side of Mathura it pairs naturally with a visit to Gokul, which is in the same direction. There is no direct public transport worth relying on; a private car is much the easiest way, and it can take in Gokul and Baldeo together on the same run. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service covers the trip, and the full temple detail sits on our Dauji Baldeo temple guide.

What to see nearby

Baldeo sits in the south eastern corner of Braj, near the infancy country of Krishna, so it combines well with the Gokul sites. Chaurasi Khamba at Mahavan, Raman Reti and Brahmand Ghat are all in the same direction from Mathura, which means a single day out from the city can take in Gokul’s tender childhood shrines and Baldeo’s mighty Balarama together. Our Gokul, Mathura and Vrindavan guide sets out that circuit, and a 2 Days Gokul Mathura Vrindavan Tour builds in the time for it.

When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable. The Huranga, the day after Holi in spring, is the temple’s supreme occasion, magnificent but overwhelming. Baldeo is far quieter than Vrindavan on ordinary days, which many pilgrims find a relief, and a weekday morning gives the calmest darshan. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide is the seasons.

The honest bit

Honest words on Dauji. Darshan is free, as it is everywhere in Braj, and no official VIP pass exists here or anywhere in the region. Baldeo is a small town and facilities are simple, so use Mathura for anything you need before you set out. The temple keeps a long midday closure, so do not arrive in the early afternoon expecting darshan. On Huranga day the crowd and the play are genuinely rough, not a gentle festival, and clothes do get torn and soaked, so dress for it and mind your valuables. And the deity does not allow photography inside the sanctum, as at most Braj temples, so do not plan on photographing Dauji himself.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar, a short way from Baldeo, so this corner of Braj is my own country rather than a stop on a route. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. For a temple off the usual Vrindavan circuit like Dauji, a local earns his place plainly: knowing that it pairs with Gokul on the Agra side, timing your visit around the midday closure, telling you the story of Balarama at the deity’s feet, and, on Huranga day, keeping your group together in a crowd that does not forgive the unwary. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: pair Dauji with Gokul in one morning. Both lie south east of Mathura, both are quiet and deeply devotional rather than grand, and seeing the tender infancy of Krishna at Gokul and then the mighty protective figure of his elder brother at Baldeo gives you the two sides of that childhood in a single, unhurried half day.

"During our Braj Yatra, Experience My India suggested including Shri Dauji Maharaj Temple in Baldeo, and it turned out to be one of the most peaceful places we visited. Gurudutt Ji explained the significance of Lord Balarama beautifully and planned the visit before the afternoon temple closure. Our driver was punctual, courteous and made the journey completely comfortable. We are grateful for such thoughtful planning."

"We travelled with our elderly parents and wanted a relaxed pilgrimage. Experience My India arranged everything perfectly, including Dauji Maharaj Temple and Gokul in the same itinerary. Gurudutt Ji planned the day according to the darshan timings, and our driver was extremely helpful throughout the journey. It was one of the smoothest and most satisfying pilgrimages our family has experienced."

Mathura Trip Plan: A Step by Step Itinerary for 1, 2 and 3 Days

A good Mathura trip plan starts with your days: one day covers the birthplace city itself, two adds Gokul and Vrindavan, and three brings in Govardhan and the villages. Begin at the Krishna Janmabhoomi in the morning, keep the midday for rest while the temples close, and take Vishram Ghat at dusk for the Yamuna aarti. October to March is the best season. Vrindavan Trip Planner: Build Your Itinerary Step by Step

To plan a Vrindavan trip, settle five things in order: how many days you have, the season, how you will travel, where you will stay, and whether you want Mathura and Gokul as well. Two days is the sweet spot for most pilgrims, October to March is the best season, and a private car with a stay in Vrindavan makes the smoothest trip. This planner walks you through each decision and gives you a ready itinerary to copy. Darshan is free everywhere. To have your plan built and booked, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Mathura Vrindavan City: A Practical Guide to the Twin Cities of Braj

Mathura and Vrindavan are twin cities of the Braj region in Uttar Pradesh, about 12 to 15 kilometres apart and usually spoken of together as one destination. Mathura is the larger administrative city and the birthplace of Krishna; Vrindavan is the temple town where he spent his youth, said to hold thousands of shrines. Get around by e-rickshaw or a private car, stay in Vrindavan, carry cash, and dress modestly. Darshan is free everywhere. To visit both with a Braj-born guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
