The story: the childhood home of Krishna

The story of this home is the very heart of the story of Krishna. It is told in the Bhagavata that Krishna was born in the prison of Mathura, to Devaki and Vasudeva, at the dead of a stormy night, while the cruel King Kansa, Devaki’s brother, who had been foretold that her eighth child would slay him, waited to kill the newborn. But by the Lord’s own power the prison doors opened, and Vasudeva carried the divine infant out through the night, across the flooded Yamuna, whose waters parted before him, to the safety of Gokul, to the home of his friend Nanda, the chief of the cowherds; and there he laid the child beside Yashoda, Nanda’s wife, and took away in his place the newborn daughter of Yashoda. So it was that Krishna came to be raised in this house, as the son of Nanda and Yashoda, in the love and safety of Gokul, far from the reach of Kansa. And here, in this home, unfolded all the beloved leelas of his childhood: the butter thief, the child who showed the universe in his mouth, the boy who played with the calves and the cowherd children. Shri Nand Yashoda Bhawan stands in Gokul, in the Mahaban area, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the Yamuna, in the land of Krishna’s infancy across the river from Mathura city. Gokul is about twelve to fifteen kilometres from Mathura by road, an easy drive of half an hour or a little more, and the bhawan sits among the other holy places of Gokul. The nearest railway junction is Mathura, well connected across the country, about an hour from Agra and three to four hours from Delhi by the Yamuna Expressway; the nearest airport is Delhi, about a hundred and sixty kilometres away. The supreme day here, as befits the childhood home of Krishna, is Janmashtami, the birthday of the Lord, when Gokul, the very place of his infancy, is at its most joyful and thronged, the streets alive with song and celebration; the days of the childhood leelas around it are beautiful too.
