I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to Vrindavan arrive by train at Tundla junction, the great railway station near Agra on the main line and then travel on to the holy town by road. It is an easy journey of about an hour and a half by the fine Yamuna Expressway. Here is everything you need to plan it: the distance, the routes, the time and how best to travel from Tundla to Vrindavan and back, told by someone from this land. Book a car with our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service, message on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809, any day from 8 AM to 9 PM.

Tundla to Vrindavan distance and time

The distance from Tundla to Vrindavan is about eighty two to eighty three kilometres by the fastest route and the drive takes about one hour and twenty five minutes to an hour and a half by road, depending on the traffic and the way you take. The quickest route runs by the Manpur to Sauj road to join the Yamuna Expressway, the fine modern motorway that sweeps up towards Delhi, leaving it near Mathura for Vrindavan. There is also a slightly longer way of about ninety four kilometres by the national highway, the NH 44, which takes a little under two hours. For such a short and easy journey, a private car or taxi from the junction is much the best way. The table gives the routes from Tundla to Vrindavan.

Vrindavan to Tundla distance

The return journey, from Vrindavan to Tundla, is much the same, about eighty one to eighty three kilometres by the fastest route and about an hour and a half by road, again by the Yamuna Expressway and the Manpur to Sauj road. There are one or two slightly longer alternatives by the national highways, the NH 19 and the NH 44, running from about eighty three to about ninety four kilometres. If you are catching a train from Tundla, allow a comfortable margin over the driving time for the traffic and to reach the platform in good time, for Tundla is a busy junction. Why pilgrims come via Tundla

Tundla junction is one of the great railway stations of the region, on the main line between Delhi and Kanpur and Kolkata, near Agra and many trains that do not stop at Mathura or Agra Cantonment do stop at Tundla, so that for pilgrims coming from the east, from Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Patna, Kolkata and beyond, Tundla is often the nearest or the most convenient railhead for Vrindavan and Braj. Having arrived at Tundla by train, the pilgrim then takes a car for the easy hour and a half to Vrindavan. It is a well worn path and a comfortable one and knowing the route and having a car ready at the junction makes the arrival in the holy land smooth and easy. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can meet you at Tundla and bring you to Vrindavan.

How to travel from Tundla to Vrindavan

There are a few ways to make the journey from Tundla to Vrindavan, but for most pilgrims a private car is far and away the best. A taxi or private car taken from Tundla junction carries you door to door in comfort in about an hour and a half, waits for no one and can be booked to meet your train, which is the easiest and most restful way, especially after a long rail journey and above all for families, the elderly and those with luggage. There are also buses and shared vehicles from the Tundla and Agra area towards Mathura, from where one changes for Vrindavan, but these are slower, less direct and more tiring. For the short and easy run from the junction to the holy town, the private car is the sensible choice and the one I recommend. The table sets out the ways.

Arriving in Vrindavan

Vrindavan, the holy town of Krishna’s love, is the goal of the journey and it is a wonderful place to arrive. Here are the beloved Banke Bihari, the dazzling marble Prem Mandir, the great ISKCON temple, the mysterious Nidhivan, the old Goswami temples and the ghats of the Yamuna and a hundred more holy places. Many pilgrims coming via Tundla give a day or two to Vrindavan and its neighbour Mathura, the birth city, only some fifteen kilometres away and often Gokul and Govardhan and Barsana too. Having come so far, it is worth giving Braj its proper time. Our places to visit in Vrindavan guide has the holy town and the three day Mathura Vrindavan pilgrimage tour takes in Vrindavan with the whole of Braj.

Combining Tundla and Vrindavan with Agra

Because Tundla lies close to Agra, only some twenty five kilometres from the city of the Taj Mahal, many pilgrims who arrive at or depart from Tundla take in Agra as well, seeing the wonder of the world along with the holy land of Krishna. A common and rewarding plan is to see the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort, then travel on by the expressway to Mathura and Vrindavan or the reverse, making one journey of the Taj city and Braj. If you are coming through Tundla, it is well worth considering adding Agra to your trip. Our Agra Mathura Vrindavan tour by car guide sets out how to see all three and the Agra Mathura Vrindavan tour package covers the three together.

When to travel

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for a visit to Vrindavan, pleasant for the drive and for the temples and ghats. The great festivals of Krishna, Janmashtami in the late monsoon and Holi in the spring, fill Vrindavan with joy and with vast crowds, so if you travel then, expect the trains to Tundla and the roads to be very busy and book well ahead. The peak summer of May and June is very hot, so the cool season is far kinder. At any time, plan your car from the junction in advance, especially if arriving on a night train. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide is the seasons.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Tundla to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. The distance is short, about eighty three kilometres by the fast route and the roads are good, so agree your car fare in advance and beware anyone who inflates the distance or the price or who quotes for the longer ninety four kilometre route when the eighty three kilometre one will do. If you arrive on a night train, arrange your car beforehand rather than searching for one late at the junction, which is safer and calmer. Allow a comfortable margin for the traffic, especially on festivals and for reaching your platform on the return, for Tundla is a busy junction. In Braj, remember always that darshan everywhere is free and no official VIP pass exists at Banke Bihari or anywhere in the land. Plan your car ahead, keep the fare clear and this short journey from the junction will bring you smoothly and happily into the holy land of Krishna.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar, in the Mathura district and the roads and railheads of Braj are my own home ground. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. What a local brings to the journey from Tundla is a car ready to meet your train at the junction, the fastest route known and the fair fare set in advance, a safe and restful arrival even on a night train and then the whole of Vrindavan and Braj and Agra too if you wish, planned and guided in the right order. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: if you are arriving at Tundla on a long distance train, especially at night or in the early hours, book your car to meet you at the junction in advance rather than looking for one on arrival. After a long rail journey it is a great comfort to step off the train and find your driver waiting with your name and to be carried smoothly the hour and a half to Vrindavan without haggling or worrying in a strange place late at night. Arrange it beforehand, settle the fare and your arrival in the holy land will be as restful and happy as the darshan that awaits you. It is the small things, well planned, that make a pilgrimage sweet.
