Varanasi to Vrindavan distance by road
By road, the Varanasi to Vrindavan distance is about 692 kilometres by the fastest route, taking roughly nine hours by the new Ganga Expressway joined to the Agra to Lucknow Expressway and there are two slightly longer alternatives. Thanks to these excellent modern expressways, this is now a very comfortable one day drive, far easier than it once was and one of the smoothest long routes in north India. Is it better to drive, take the train or fly?
Unlike some very long journeys, the road from Varanasi is genuinely a good option, so here the choice is a real one. Driving, on the new expressways, is comfortable and gives you the freedom to start when you like and to stop where you please and at about nine hours it is a single long day. The train is economical and restful, running overnight towards Mathura Junction, the gateway to both towns. Flying is fastest of all if you go via Delhi. For most, the drive or an overnight train is the natural choice on this route; flying makes best sense only if your time is very short. The table compares them.
Varanasi to Vrindavan, the ways compared. Verify times when you book.
Way | Time | Best for |
Driving direct | About 9 hours | Comfort and freedom on good expressways |
Train to Mathura | About 10 to 14 hours | Economy and restful overnight travel |
Flight via Delhi | About 1.5 hr air plus 3.5 hr road | Speed when time is short |
Varanasi to Vrindavan by train
The train is a fine way to make this journey and India’s network serves the route well, for both Varanasi and Mathura sit on major trunk lines. The nearest large station to Vrindavan is Mathura Junction, about twelve to fifteen kilometres from the town and trains run from Varanasi towards Mathura and the Delhi direction, taking somewhere around ten to fourteen hours depending on the service, best done overnight in a sleeper or AC coach so that you wake near Braj. From Mathura Junction it is a short drive on to Vrindavan. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can meet your train and carry you the last stretch.
Varanasi to Vrindavan by flight
If your time is short, flying is the fastest way, though it means going via Delhi, for neither Varanasi nor Braj has a direct air link between them. Varanasi has a good airport with frequent flights to Delhi, about one and a half hours in the air and from Delhi airport it is about a hundred and eighty kilometres and three and a half hours by road to Vrindavan on the Yamuna Expressway. Agra has a small airport closer to Braj but with very limited flights, so Delhi is the practical gateway. For a quick trip, fly to Delhi and let us drive you in; for a leisurely one, the expressway drive or the train is lovelier.
Reaching Vrindavan from the station or airport
However you come, the final approach to Vrindavan is a short one. If you drive, the expressway brings you close before the last road into town; from Mathura Junction it is only twelve to fifteen kilometres, about half an hour; and from Delhi airport it is about a hundred and eighty kilometres and three and a half hours. A private car that meets you and drives you in is much the easiest way after a journey, rather than seeking transport tired and laden. The table gives the final legs.

Combining Kashi and Braj
Here is the thing I most want you to know, as a Brajwasi who welcomes pilgrims from Varanasi: Kashi and Braj belong together. Varanasi, the city of Shiva on the Ganga and Vrindavan and Mathura, the land of Krishna on the Yamuna, are two of the very holiest places in all of Sanatan Dharma and to join them in one journey, the Lord of destruction and the Lord of love, the Ganga and the Yamuna, is a pilgrimage of rare completeness. Having come the 692 kilometres from Kashi, give Braj its proper due of two or three days: Vrindavan, Mathura the birthplace, my own Gokul and if you have time Govardhan and Barsana. A journey between two such cities deserves an unhurried end. Our Mathura Vrindavan trip planner helps you shape the days and the three day Mathura Vrindavan pilgrimage tour covers the whole of Braj at a calm pace.
When to visit Vrindavan
Time your visit for the good season. The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable and they hold the great festivals of Braj: Janmashtami in late summer, the world famous Holi of spring and the devotional month of Kartik in autumn. The summer from April to June is very hot and the monsoon humid. If you can, come in the cool season and give Braj enough days to be worth the journey from Kashi. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide has the full picture.
The honest bit
Honest words for the journey from Varanasi. The road is genuinely good now, so driving the roughly nine hours on the expressways is a fair choice, but break it with a stop or two and do not push a tired driver through the dark; an overnight train is the restful alternative. Darshan everywhere in Braj is free and no official VIP pass exists at Banke Bihari or anywhere in the region, whatever a tourist may promise a pilgrim from far away. Book your train well ahead in the festival seasons, when every seat towards Delhi fills. And having joined Kashi to Braj, give the land of Krishna the unhurried days it deserves rather than a single rushed one.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar and I welcome pilgrims from Varanasi and the east every season, meeting them at the station or the airport or the edge of the expressway and carrying them into Braj. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. For a traveller joining Kashi and Braj, a local at the Braj end is the whole difference: a car that meets you so you never stand lost and tired, the darshan timed around the crowds, the honest word on passes that should be free and the whole of Braj, Mathura, Gokul and the villages, shaped around your days. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.
Tip from Gurudutt: if you drive from Varanasi, start early in the morning so you reach Braj by late afternoon, in time to rest and take the evening aarti on your first day. The expressways are smooth and fast, but nine hours is still a full day and arriving in daylight, unhurried, lets your pilgrimage begin gently rather than at the tired end of a long drive.
