📌 QUICK ANSWER

The distance from Lucknow to Vrindavan is about 397 km by road, taking roughly 5.5 hours by car, mostly on the fast Agra-Lucknow Expressway. It is a smooth, straight drive, best done in one comfortable stretch with a short break. If you would rather not drive, you can take a train towards Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj and a short drive on. Whichever way you come, the last leg into Vrindavan is only about 30 minutes from Mathura. To arrange a car and your Vrindavan darshan, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Lucknow, the graceful city of Nawabs in the heart of Uttar Pradesh and Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna in the west of the state, are joined by one of India's finest highways, the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. It is a smooth, straight run of about five and a half hours, an easy overnight or a long day's drive from the capital of UP to the land of Braj. Here is how to make the journey, whichever way suits you. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Lucknow to Vrindavan is about 397 to 419 km by road, roughly 5.5 to 7 hours by car.

  • The fastest route runs on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, about 397 km in around 5 hours 32 minutes.

  • The expressway makes this a smooth, straight drive; the alternatives via NH routes are a little longer.

  • It is a comfortable long day's drive or an easy overnight drive from Lucknow.

  • By train, travel from Lucknow towards Mathura Junction, then about 30 minutes by road to Vrindavan.

  • The last leg, Mathura to Vrindavan, is only about 12 to 15 km, around 30 minutes.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Lucknow and the cities of central and eastern Uttar Pradesh send many devotees west to Braj and the Agra-Lucknow Expressway has made that journey far quicker and smoother than it once was. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers at the station and on the highway: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel, where to break the journey and the easy last leg into Vrindavan.

Lucknow to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance is around 397 to 419 km and the drive takes about 5.5 to 7 hours depending on the route and the traffic. The Agra-Lucknow Expressway is the clear spine of this journey, a fast, modern road that carries you most of the way west before you turn up towards Braj. There are three main ways.

The direct Agra-Lucknow Expressway route is the shortest and quickest and the one I recommend, since the expressway is smooth and fast; the routes joining via NH 19 or NH731 are a little longer and slower for the ordinary-highway stretches. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line and a car that knows the road picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way or meet you for the last leg.

Vrindavan to Lucknow distance (the return journey)

The road back is much the same, around 382 to 411 km, about 5.5 to 6.5 hours. If you are planning the reverse leg, from Braj back to Lucknow, these are the main routes.

Lucknow to Vrindavan by train

The train is a comfortable way to cover this distance and it spares you the long drive. There is no railway station in Vrindavan large enough for most trains, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj and take a short drive on. From Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is only about 14 km, around 30 minutes by road and we can meet your train.

A few things worth knowing about the train:

  • Where to board: trains leave from Lucknow's stations (Lucknow NR and Lucknow Junction) towards Mathura Junction.

  • How long it takes: roughly 6 to 9 hours depending on the service and route; overnight trains are convenient.

  • Book ahead: reserve your Lucknow to Mathura Junction ticket in advance, especially in festival season, when seats go quickly.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction we carry you to Vrindavan and around the temples in the right order.

Lucknow to Vrindavan by air

For this distance, flying is possible but rarely worth it. Lucknow has a busy airport, but Vrindavan and Mathura have none of their own and the nearest major one is Delhi, from where you would still drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj. Since the road journey from Lucknow is only about five and a half hours direct, a car or train usually beats flying via Delhi door to door.

  • Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 150 km from Braj.

  • Flying via Delhi means a flight from Lucknow plus a 3 to 3.5 hour drive, so it rarely saves time.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will be closer to Braj once fully operational.

  • Our honest view: from Lucknow, the direct drive or a train is simpler than flying.

Lucknow to Vrindavan by bus

Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Lucknow towards Agra and Mathura, taking around 7 to 9 hours, from where a short local ride brings you to Vrindavan. It is cheaper than a car but longer and less comfortable over such a distance and best suited to those travelling light and on a tight budget.

Which is the best way to travel?

The right choice depends on your time, budget and comfort. In short: a private car is the most flexible and, on the expressway, comfortable and direct, taking you door to door; a train to Mathura is a restful, good-value alternative, especially overnight; flying via Delhi rarely saves time; and the bus is the cheapest but the most tiring. The table sets them side by side.

Bus

Tight budgets, travelling light

A quick comparison. On this route a private car is the most comfortable and direct; the train is the value pick, good as an overnight.

Breaking the journey: Lucknow and Agra

The Agra-Lucknow Expressway is a long, smooth run and it has clean, modern rest stops with food courts and fuel, so a single short break for chai and a stretch is all you need. Agra, with the Taj Mahal, sits near the western end of the expressway, so many travellers pause there to add the Taj to their Braj trip, a natural and beautiful stop on the way. Plan one easy break and the drive passes comfortably.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best seen early in the cool morning and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan and in nearby Mathura the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very birthplace of the Lord. After a long drive, an overnight stay lets you take the darshan unhurried.

Best time to make the trip

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj itself, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer of April to June is very hot for such a long drive. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide for the seasons in full.

Tips for the journey

  • Take the direct Agra-Lucknow Expressway route; it is the fastest and smoothest.

  • Start early for a comfortable long day's drive or travel overnight by train.

  • Plan one short break at an expressway rest stop for chai and fuel.

  • Consider pausing at Agra for the Taj Mahal, near the western end of the expressway.

  • For the train, book a Lucknow to Mathura Junction ticket well ahead in festival season.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Lucknow to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. Thanks to the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, this once-tiring drive is now a smooth five and a half hours, well within a long day, though an overnight stay makes it far more restful. The distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and roadworks, so choose your road by the day. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; if you would rather break the journey or stay the night, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels. Plan the drive well, perhaps with the Taj on the way and the darshan at the end is worth every mile.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Lucknow and across Uttar Pradesh every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you drive or train in, we meet you at Mathura Junction, Delhi or your doorstep, carry you around the temples in the right order and, if you wish, add Agra and the Taj to the trip, a natural stop on the expressway, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: since Agra sits right on your route near the end of the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, make the most of it. Break your journey at Agra for the Taj Mahal at sunrise, then drive the last hour up to Braj for the temples, so one trip gives you both the Taj and the darshan of Krishna's land. It is the most beautiful way to shape a Lucknow to Vrindavan journey.

How to Visit Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan: A Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

To visit Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan, plan two to three days and travel the Yamuna Expressway from Delhi. Start with the Braj towns, Vrindavan and Mathura, for Krishna's temples, then drive about an hour to Agra for the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. The easiest way is a private car with a driver or a ready-made tour package; you can also train to Mathura Junction and Agra Cantt.
