Rising on Chhatikara Road at the edge of Vrindavan is a temple unlike any other in Braj or indeed the world. The Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir, conceived by the devotees of ISKCON Bangalore, is being built to stand around 700 feet tall, which will make it the tallest religious monument on earth when it is finished. It is still under construction, with completion targeted around 2028, but the deity worship, the aarti and the grand campus already draw pilgrims every day. As a local, I take guests here often, so in this guide I will cover what the temple is, its darshan and aarti timings, its remarkable history and exactly how to visit. A Word From Your Guide

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul and guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them over the years. The Chandrodaya Mandir is one of the stops guests ask about most, partly out of wonder at its scale and partly out of confusion, because it is still being built and people are not sure what there is to see yet. Let me set that straight: the deity worship and the aarti are very much alive and deeply peaceful and the campus is already worth the visit, even though the great tower and its viewing gallery are not yet open. In this guide I will tell you exactly what to expect today and what is still to come.

What Is the Vrindavan Chandrodaya Temple?

The Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir is a temple to Sri Radha Krishna being built on Chhatikara Road in Vrindavan, in Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh. It was conceived by the devotees of ISKCON Bangalore and it is designed to be the world's tallest religious monument and temple, standing at around 700 feet across 70 to 75 floors. The design is a fusion of the traditional Nagara temple style with modern skyscraper engineering, drawing inspiration from Vrindavan's own ancient temples such as the Madan Mohan Temple and the Radha Govind Dev temple. The campus spans an enormous 642 acres and is planned as a complete spiritual township, not merely a place of worship. It joins Vrindavan's other great modern landmark, Prem Mandir, in drawing visitors from across the world.

Darshan and Aarti at Chandrodaya Mandir

Although the tower is unfinished, the temple functions fully, following the disciplined daily routine for which ISKCON is known. The day opens with the beautiful Mangala Aarti at 4:30 AM, a pre-dawn session that is one of the most peaceful experiences in all of Braj, free of the tourist rush. The main morning darshan runs from about 7:15 AM to 1:00 PM, the halls close through the afternoon and the temple reopens from 4:15 PM to 8:15 PM, with the congregational Sandhya Aarti around 7:00 PM. The campus is calm on weekdays and busiest on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. If you want to plan the aarti into a wider temple day, see our full guide to the Mathura and Vrindavan temple timings.

The History and Vision Behind the Temple

Unlike the centuries-old shrines of Braj, the Chandrodaya Mandir is a modern vision. Its roots trace to the 1970s, when Srila Prabhupada, the founder-acharya of ISKCON, expressed a desire for monumental, world-class temples to Sri Radha Krishna in Vrindavan and Mayapur, envisioned as cultural and educational centres as much as places of worship. Decades later, the leadership of ISKCON Bangalore, led by its president Madhu Pandit Dasa, resolved to realise that vision as a skyscraper temple. The Bhoomi Puja was performed on 16 March 2014 on Chhatikara Road and in November 2014 the then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, laid the foundation stone of the main tower. Because of the unprecedented height, the early years focused on engineering: workers cast 511 mega-piles reaching over 55 metres deep and premier institutions including the IIT were brought in to secure the structure. The scale of the work, along with pauses during the pandemic, pushed the completion target to around December 2028.

The Grand Campus: What Is Being Built

The finished campus is planned as a world of its own. At its heart is the Grand Temple Hall housing the deities of Sri Radha Vrindavan Chandra. Around it will stand a Srila Prabhupada Museum and Expo, a Cultural and Educational Centre dedicated to the Bhagavad Gita and the Srimad Bhagavatam and a protected Gaushala for cows. The most remarkable feature is the Dvadashakanana, a 26-acre recreation of the twelve forests of Braj, with hillocks, waterfalls and lotus lakes. In time, a high-speed capsule elevator will carry visitors to an upper viewing gallery with panoramic views of the Yamuna and the Braj landscape. For now, much of this is still rising, so the visit today is about the deity worship and the grounds rather than the tower. For more of the region's sights, see our guide to the places to see in Mathura and Vrindavan.

Visitor Insights: Entry, Dress and Busy Times

A few practical things make the visit smooth. Entry is completely free and there are no official VIP tickets or priority darshan passes, so ignore any street touts outside the gates trying to sell access. Modest attire is mandatory: shoulders and knees must be fully covered, traditional Indian wear is encouraged and shorts and short skirts are not permitted. The campus is generally calm on weekdays and peaks on weekend evenings. If you visit during the sacred autumn month of Kartik, in October and November, the temple hosts the lovely Kartik Deepotsav lamp-lighting in the evenings; see our calendar of Braj festivals to time your trip.

How to Reach Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir from Delhi and Agra

The temple sits right on Chhatikara Road, so it is far easier to reach by car than the shrines deep inside the old city. Here is the transit summary from both hubs.

By train, the railhead is Mathura Junction, about 15 km away, well connected to Delhi and Agra; from there an auto or e-rickshaw reaches the campus.

From Delhi, the practical route for the Chandrodaya Mandir is NH-44, exiting at Chhatikara Chauraha onto Vrindavan Road or the Yamuna Expressway if you start from Noida or East Delhi. From Agra it is a quick straight run of about 68 km up NH-44. By train, fast services like the Gatimaan or Taj Express reach Mathura Junction in around an hour from Delhi and 35 to 45 minutes from Agra. We can arrange a comfortable Mathura Vrindavan taxi from either city.

Tips for Visiting Chandrodaya Mandir

  • Come for Mangala Aarti at 4:30 AM for the most peaceful darshan of the day.

  • Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered; traditional wear is ideal.

  • Visit on a weekday if you can, as weekend evenings are the busiest.

  • Ignore touts selling VIP or priority access; entry is free and there are no such passes.

  • Pair it with nearby stops, as it sits on the route into Vrindavan from the expressway.

  • Visit Kartik for the beautiful evening Deepotsav lamp-lighting, if your dates allow.

The Honest Bit

Let me be honest, because expectations matter here. The Chandrodaya Mandir is still under construction and that word catches people out. The headline features, the 700-foot tower, the capsule elevator, the panoramic viewing gallery and much of the recreated forest, are not yet open to the public; completion is targeted around 2028 and timelines on a project this size can move. So do not come expecting to ride to the top of the world's tallest temple just yet. What you will find today is a fully functioning temple with beautiful, disciplined deity worship and aarti, a vast campus taking shape and a genuine sense of something historic being built. For many pilgrims that is deeply moving in itself. Come for the darshan and the vision, keep your expectations honest about the tower and you will not be disappointed. For a comfortable base nearby, see our list of Mathura and Vrindavan hotels.

Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them by now. Because the Chandrodaya Mandir sits right on the expressway approach to Vrindavan, we slot it neatly into your arrival or departure day, so you see it without losing time, then move on to the darshan deeper in town. We time your visit for the quiet weekday aarti where we can handle the dress-code and the parking and build the whole trip around comfortable Mathura Vrindavan itineraries. We are a Ministry of Tourism certified operator with a fleet of more than fifty vehicles, rated 4.5 stars and we answer on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM.

Tip from Gurudutt: Visit the Chandrodaya Mandir on your way into or out of Vrindavan, not as a special separate trip, because it sits right on the Chhatikara approach and the deeper temples do not. If you can manage an early start, the 4:30 AM Mangala Aarti here is one of the most serene in all of Braj, with almost no crowd. Dress traditionally, it simply feels right in a place like this and keep your expectations clear: you are coming to worship and to witness something historic being built, not to ride a tower that is not open yet. Come in that spirit and it is a beautiful stop.

Plan Your Visit to Chandrodaya Mandir
