I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. The story of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is close to the heart of every pilgrim who loves Vrindavan, for without him, much of this holy land might still lie lost and forgotten. Here I tell his story on the very ground where it happened and show you the sites he rediscovered, which you can still visit today.
Who was Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu?
Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486-1534) was a great saint and mystic, born in Bengal, who is revered as the founder of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition and, by his devotees, as the combined avatar of Radha and Krishna together, the Lord come in the mood and golden form of Radha to taste his own love and to teach the world the chanting of the holy names. He spread the congregational chanting (sankirtan) of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra across India and inspired a great flowering of devotion whose influence reaches, through the Gaudiya tradition and later ISKCON, around the world today. His coming to Vrindavan was the turning point in the revival of Krishna's holy land.
The 1515 visit: rediscovering the lost land of Krishna
By the early sixteenth century, the sacred Vrindavan of Krishna's pastimes had largely been lost. Over centuries of neglect and invasion, the holy sites had been forgotten, the groves overgrown, the kunds and ghats buried and unknown; what remained was a half-wild forest, its glory hidden. In 1515, moved by divine longing, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu travelled to Vrindavan, arriving around Kartik Purnima. There, in a state of deep spiritual absorption, weeping and dancing in love, he wandered the land and by his inner vision began to rediscover the very places where Krishna and Radha had played, places no living person then knew. It was an act of divine archaeology, the holy land revealed again through the heart of a saint.
The sacred sites Chaitanya Mahaprabhu rediscovered
Among the many sites Sri Chaitanya revealed, these are the most celebrated. They can still be visited today.

Radha Kund & Shyam Kund | Rediscovered the holiest kunds of Braj, lost in the fields near Govardhan |
Imlitala | Sat chanting under a tamarind tree on the Yamuna, in deep absorption |
Akrura Ghat | Visited the ghat linked to the story of Akrura and Krishna |
The twelve forests (vans) | Wandered and honoured the twelve sacred forests of Braj |
Key sites of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Vrindavan, which can still be visited today.
The most famous of his discoveries is Radha Kund and Shyam Kund near Govardhan, the holiest waters in all of Braj, which by tradition he found lost in the fields and restored to worship. He also loved to sit at Imlitala, on the Yamuna, chanting under a tamarind tree, said to be the very tree from Krishna's own time; and he honoured the twelve sacred forests (dwadash kanan) that make up the holy region of Braj.
The Goswamis: building the Vrindavan of today
Sri Chaitanya himself did not stay long in Vrindavan; his greater work was to send his most learned and devoted disciples, the Goswamis, to settle here and carry on the revival. The six great Goswamis, chief among them Rupa Goswami and Sanatana Goswami and also Jiva, Raghunatha Dasa, Raghunatha Bhatta and Gopala Bhatta, came to Vrindavan at his direction. There they lived lives of intense devotion and scholarship: they uncovered and established the holy sites, wrote the great scriptures and devotional works of the Gaudiya tradition and built the first of Vrindavan's magnificent temples. The Radha Raman temple, established by Gopala Bhatta Goswami and the Radha Damodar, Radha Gopinath and other old temples, are their living legacy. The Vrindavan of temples and worship we know today was, quite literally, built upon Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's vision through the hands of his Goswamis.
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's legacy in Vrindavan today
Five centuries later, Sri Chaitanya's presence fills Vrindavan still. The endless kirtan of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra that rings through the town is his gift; the Gaudiya temples are his disciples' work; and the worldwide movement of Krishna devotion, including the ISKCON that draws visitors from every nation, flows from his tradition. For devotees from Bengal and around the world, to come to Vrindavan is in part to walk in the footsteps of Mahaprabhu, to see the sites he revealed and to join the chanting he began. The beloved Banke Bihari and the whole living worship of Radha and Krishna owe their flourishing to the revival he set in motion.
Walking in Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's footsteps
You can still visit the places touched by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. A devotee's route takes in Imlitala and the Yamuna ghats where he chanted; the old Gaudiya temples of the Goswamis, Radha Raman, Radha Damodar and the rest, in the old town; and, above all, Radha Kund and Shyam Kund at Govardhan, the greatest of his discoveries. To walk this route with one who knows the history and the stories is to feel the hidden thread that revived the whole holy land. We can arrange your pooja and seva at these sacred sites.
The honest bit
Honest words from one born in Braj. The story of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Vrindavan is told from the devotional and historical tradition of the Gaudiya Vaishnavas, above all the Chaitanya Charitamrita, the great account of his life; and dates and details vary a little between sources, with his Vrindavan visit usually placed around 1515. The deeper truth, though, is beyond dispute and easy to feel: that the living, temple-filled, kirtan-soaked Vrindavan we love today was revived from near-oblivion through this one saint and his disciples. Some of the sites he touched are grand temples now, others quiet and little-visited; all repay the devotee who seeks them with a knowing guide. To understand Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is to understand how Vrindavan itself came to be reborn.
