I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 of them, many of whom come on the great pilgrimage between the dhams of Krishna. Dwarka, his golden kingdom by the western sea and Vrindavan, the green land of his childhood in the north, are two of the holiest places in the life of the Lord and to journey from one to the other is a pilgrimage of deep meaning. But it is a very long way. Here is the honest guide to the journey: the distances, the routes and the best way to travel it. Plan the Braj part with our Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809, any day from 8 AM to 9 PM.

Dwarka to Vrindavan distance by road

By road, the Dwarka to Vrindavan distance is about one thousand three hundred and eighty three kilometres by the fastest route, taking roughly twenty two to twenty three hours of driving, for it crosses the whole width of India from the Arabian Sea in Gujarat to the plains of Uttar Pradesh. There are three main road options, all close in length and time. This is a very long haul and the table gives the routes.

Should you drive, fly or take the train?

Let me be honest, as a Brajwasi who would rather you arrive fresh for darshan than exhausted: this is not a journey to drive straight through. Twenty two hours or more at the wheel across the width of the country, over two days with an overnight halt, is a great and tiring undertaking, sensible only if you truly wish to make a road trip of it with stops along the way. For almost everyone, flying or the train is far better. Flying is much the fastest, by way of the airports of Gujarat and Delhi. The train is the classic pilgrim way, long but restful. The table compares them.

Flying from Dwarka to Vrindavan

Flying is much the fastest way to bridge this great distance. Dwarka itself has no major airport, so you travel first to Jamnagar, about a hundred and forty kilometres away or better to Rajkot or Ahmedabad and fly from there to Delhi, roughly two to two and a half hours in the air. From Delhi airport it is about a hundred and eighty kilometres and three and a half hours by road to Vrindavan on the Yamuna Expressway. So the whole journey, though it spans the country, can be done in a single long day by air, where the road would take two. For most pilgrims short of time, this is the way. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can meet your Delhi flight and drive you in.

The train from Dwarka to Vrindavan

The train is the classic way for the pilgrim who has time and wishes to travel gently. Dwarka is on the western railway line and trains run from Dwarka towards Mathura and the Delhi direction, a long journey of around twenty four to thirty hours depending on the service, best taken in a sleeper or AC coach so that the miles pass in rest. The nearest large station to Vrindavan is Mathura Junction, about twelve to fifteen kilometres from the town, from where it is a short drive on. Book well ahead, especially in the pilgrimage seasons, for these long distance trains fill early. It is long, but it is the time honoured way between the dhams.

Reaching Vrindavan at the end of the journey

However you cross the country, the final approach to Vrindavan is a short one. From Mathura Junction it is only twelve to fifteen kilometres, about half an hour; from Delhi airport it is about a hundred and eighty kilometres and three and a half hours on the expressway. After such a long journey, a private car that meets you and carries you the last stretch is a great kindness, rather than seeking transport tired and laden. The table gives the final legs.

Two dhams of Krishna: Dwarka and Vrindavan

Here is what makes this long journey worth every hour, the thing I most want a pilgrim to feel: Dwarka and Vrindavan are two of the great dhams, the holy abodes, of one Lord across the arc of his life. In Vrindavan and my own Braj, Krishna lived his childhood and youth, the cowherd boy of the flute, the beloved of Radha and the gopis, in the green land by the Yamuna. In Dwarka, far to the west by the sea, he reigned in his majesty as king, Dwarkadhish, the lord of the golden city. To journey from Dwarka to Vrindavan is to travel across the whole life of Krishna, from the king back to the child and it is one of the most beautiful pilgrimages in all of Sanatan Dharma. Having come so far, give Braj the two or three days it deserves: Vrindavan, Mathura the birthplace, my Gokul of his infancy and Govardhan and Barsana beyond. Our three day Mathura Vrindavan pilgrimage tour covers the whole of Braj at a calm pace and our Mathura Vrindavan trip planner helps you shape the days.

When to visit Vrindavan

Time your visit for the good season. The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable and they hold the great festivals: Janmashtami in late summer, the world famous Holi of spring and the devotional month of Kartik in autumn. The summer from April to June is very hot and the monsoon humid. Having travelled so far, it is worth timing your journey for the pleasant season if you can. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and our Mathura Vrindavan weather guide, have the full picture.

The honest bit

Honest words for so long a journey. Do not attempt to drive from Dwarka to Vrindavan in one push; it is over twenty two hours and a tired driver on the night highways is a danger, so fly, take the train or make a proper two day road trip with a good overnight halt. Flying is by far the fastest and, for most, the wisest. Darshan everywhere in Braj is free and no official VIP pass exists at Banke Bihari or anywhere in the region, whatever a tout may promise a pilgrim from far away. Book trains and flights well ahead in the festival seasons, when every seat fills. And having crossed the whole country between the two dhams of Krishna, do not rush Braj in a single day; give it the time such a pilgrimage deserves.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar and I welcome pilgrims who come the long way from Dwarka and the west every season, meeting them at the airport or the station and carrying them into Braj. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. For a traveller who has crossed the country between the dhams, a local at the Braj end is the whole difference: a car that meets you so you never stand lost and tired, the darshan timed around the crowds, the honest word on passes that should be free and the whole of Braj shaped around your days. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: fly this one if you possibly can. The road and the rail between Dwarka and Vrindavan are a full day or more each and after such a journey a pilgrim arrives worn out, in no state for darshan. Fly from Gujarat to Delhi, let us meet you and drive you into Braj and you will step into Vrindavan fresh and glad, ready to give the land of Krishna the joy it deserves rather than the tired end of a long haul.

Plan your trip from Dwarka

Tell me how you are coming and your dates and I will have a car meet you and carry you into Braj, with your days in Vrindavan, Mathura and Gokul planned around the darshan, for one clear price. The hill is worshipped as Krishna himself, circled by pilgrims on its 21 km parikrama and never climbed. It is one of the holiest places in all of Braj.
