Ghaziabad, the busy gateway city at Delhi's eastern edge and Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna on the Yamuna, are barely a couple of hours apart. For the millions of the National Capital Region, this is about the easiest pilgrimage there is, a quick run down the Yamuna Expressway to the Lord's own land. Here is how to make the journey, whichever way suits you. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Ghaziabad to Vrindavan is about 154 to 168 km by road, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by car.

  • The shortest routes use the Yamuna Expressway, about 154 km in around 2 hours 49 minutes.

  • The Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 route is quickest in time at about 2 hours 41 minutes.

  • It is short enough for an easy same-day darshan from the NCR.

  • By train, travel from Ghaziabad to Mathura Junction, then about 30 minutes by road to Vrindavan.

  • The last leg, Mathura to Vrindavan, is only about 12 to 15 km, around 30 minutes.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Ghaziabad and the whole NCR are practically on Braj's doorstep and I welcome many families who drive down for a single day of darshan. It is a short, simple road that asks for little planning beyond an early start. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers at the station and on the highway: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel, where to break the journey and the easy last leg into Vrindavan.

Ghaziabad to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance is around 154 to 168 km and the drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours depending on the route and the traffic. The Yamuna Expressway is the natural spine of this journey; the choice is mainly how you reach it from Ghaziabad. There are three main ways.

The Yamuna Expressway routes are shortest in distance, while the Eastern Peripheral Expressway route is a little quicker in time by avoiding the city crawl. On the day, live traffic through Noida decides the winner and a car that knows the road picks the smoothest line; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way or meet you for the last leg.

Vrindavan to Ghaziabad distance (the return journey)

The road back is much the same, around 155 to 168 km, about 2.5 to 3 hours. If you are planning the reverse leg, from Braj back to Ghaziabad, these are the main routes.

Ghaziabad to Vrindavan by train

The train is a comfortable way to cover the distance and it spares you the Noida traffic. There is no railway station in Vrindavan large enough for most trains, so you travel from Ghaziabad to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj and take a short drive on. From Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is only about 14 km, around 30 minutes by road and we can meet your train.

A few things worth knowing about the train:

  • How long it takes: roughly 2.5 to 4 hours depending on the service; Ghaziabad is a major junction with many trains toward Mathura.

  • When to travel: an early daytime train lets you reach Braj with the whole day ahead for darshan.

  • Book ahead: reserve your Ghaziabad to Mathura Junction ticket in advance, especially in festival season.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction we carry you to Vrindavan and around the temples in the right order.

Ghaziabad to Vrindavan by air

For a journey this short, flying makes no sense at all. Ghaziabad has no commercial airport, Vrindavan and Mathura have none of their own and the nearest one is Delhi, about 150 km away. With the whole drive under three hours, a car or train beats any flight many times over.

  • Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), from where Braj is about 3 to 3.5 hours by road.

  • Coming soon: the Noida International Airport at Jewar sits on the Yamuna Expressway and will be much closer to Braj once fully operational.

  • Our honest view: from Ghaziabad, simply drive or take the train; there is no case for flying.

Ghaziabad to Vrindavan by bus

Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Ghaziabad and the NCR toward Mathura, from where a short local ride brings you to Vrindavan; the whole journey takes around 3.5 to 5 hours. It is cheaper than a car but a little longer and less comfortable and best suited to those travelling light and on a tight budget.

Which is the best way to travel?

The right choice depends on your time, budget and comfort. In short: a private car is the most flexible and the fastest on this short route, taking you door to door; a train to Mathura is a comfortable, good-value alternative; flying is out of the question; and the bus is the cheapest but the slowest. The table sets them side by side.

Not a sensible option on this route

Bus

3.5 to 5 hr

A quick comparison. On this short route a private car is both the fastest and the most comfortable; the train runs it close for value.

Breaking the journey: Lucknow and Agra

The drive is so short that it needs no real break, but the Yamuna Expressway has clean, well-kept rest plazas along the way if you would like a tea or a stretch. The one thing worth planning is the exit from the NCR: leaving Ghaziabad before the morning rush or taking the Eastern Peripheral Expressway around the congestion, keeps the whole journey smooth and quick from the first mile to Braj.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best seen early in the cool morning and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan and in nearby Mathura the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very birthplace of the Lord. Because the drive is so quick, you can leave the NCR at dawn and be at darshan by mid-morning.

Best time to make the trip

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj itself, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer of April to June is very hot. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide for the seasons in full.

Tips for the journey

  • Leave Ghaziabad before the morning rush to clear the NCR quickly.

  • If Noida traffic is heavy, take the Eastern Peripheral Expressway around it.

  • The Yamuna Expressway is well tolled and fast; keep some cash or FASTag ready.

  • For the train, book a Ghaziabad to Mathura Junction ticket ahead, especially at festival time.

  • Being so close, plan an early start and you can comfortably do darshan and return the same day.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Ghaziabad to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. This is about the easiest run into Braj there is, a couple of hours on a good expressway, well within a single day's outing from the NCR. The distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and on this route the only real variable is getting out of the Delhi region cleanly. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; if you would rather stay the night and take it slowly, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels. Plan the early start well and the darshan at the end is worth every mile.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Ghaziabad and the whole NCR every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you drive or train in, we meet you at Mathura Junction or your doorstep, carry you around the temples in the right order and, if you wish, add Agra and the Taj to the day, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: being so close, Vrindavan is the perfect one-day escape from the NCR. Leave Ghaziabad by six or seven, take darshan of Banke Bihari before the midday closing, have your prasad and a quiet walk by the Yamuna, see Prem Mandir light up in the evening and drive home the same night. A whole pilgrimage in a single unhurried day.

How Many Days Are Required to Visit Vrindavan? A Braj Guide's Honest Answer

You need at least two days to visit Vrindavan properly, with one day for Vrindavan's own temples (Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir, ISKCON, Nidhivan) and a second for Mathura and the wider Braj (Krishna Janmabhoomi, Govardhan, Gokul). One day is enough only for the main highlights and feels rushed, while three days lets you add Barsana, Radha Kund and a parikrama in peace. Devotees visiting for Kartik or a festival often stay a week or more. To plan the right number of days and arrange a car and guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
