The presiding deity: Haridev, the heart of Giriraj
The temple is dedicated to Shri Haridev, a form of Lord Krishna and he holds a very special place: Haridev is revered as the presiding deity, the very heart, of Giriraj Govardhan, the sacred hill that Krishna lifted and that is worshipped as Krishna himself. So to take the darshan of Haridev Ji is, in a sense, to take the darshan of the living heart of the holy hill, which is why it is held to be an essential stop on the parikrama. The deity is enshrined in the historic temple on the bank of the Mansi Ganga, the sacred lake at the centre of Govardhan town.
The history: Vajranabh, Chaitanya and Aurangzeb
The Haridev Ji temple is deeply ancient. By tradition, the original red-sandstone temple was built around five thousand years ago by Maharaja Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, who re-established so many of the lost holy sites of Braj after the Lord's time; and it is counted as one of the four main ancient temples of Braj. Many centuries later, the great saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who rediscovered the holy land of Vrindavan, visited and rested at this very site on his pilgrimage through Braj. Then, in a darker chapter, the temple was targeted and damaged by Mughal forces during the reign of Aurangzeb in 1670, as were so many of Braj's temples; the custodians saved the sacred deity by relocating it and a replica was later installed for worship. So the temple you see today carries five thousand years of devotion and the scars and the survival of Braj's troubled history.
Haridev Ji and the Govardhan parikrama
For pilgrims walking the sacred 21-km Govardhan parikrama, the circumambulation of the holy hill, darshan at the Haridev Ji temple is considered an essential part of the journey, for it is the temple of the presiding deity of Giriraj. The temple sits at the heart of Govardhan town, by the Mansi Ganga, which is itself one of the holiest spots on the parikrama, where pilgrims bathe. So a visit to Haridev Ji, the Mansi Ganga and the Daan Ghati are the natural beginning or heart of a Govardhan parikrama; see our Vrindavan and Govardhan guide and our Govardhan Parikrama guide.

The honest bit
Honest words from one born in Braj. The Haridev Ji temple is one of the truly ancient and important temples of Braj, the heart of Giriraj and worth seeking out, but it is a historic town temple, not a grand modern complex; its treasure is its antiquity, its deity and its place in the parikrama. The timings here are the temple's usual ones, but they shift by 30 to 45 minutes between summer and winter and can change on festivals like Govardhan Puja, so confirm on the day and remember the long midday closure. Govardhan town gets very crowded on festivals and weekends. The history and legends here, of Vajranabh's founding, of Chaitanya's visit, of the Aurangzeb-era attack and the saving of the deity, come from the tradition and historical record of Braj and such accounts carry some variation; the sanctity is undoubted. Visited with its story known, as part of the parikrama, Haridev Ji is a deeply rewarding darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: begin your Govardhan parikrama with the darshan of Haridev Ji, for he is the heart of Giriraj and it is fitting to bow to the Lord of the hill before you walk around it. Come in the early morning, for the Mangala Aarti, when the ancient red-sandstone temple is quiet and the Mansi Ganga beside it is still; take the darshan of Haridev, then a few steps away bathe at the sacred Mansi Ganga and only then set out on the parikrama. To start the circuit of the holy hill at the feet of its presiding deity, in the hush of dawn, is to walk the whole parikrama with his blessing in your heart.
