📌 QUICK ANSWER
Yogmaya Mandir is a temple to Goddess Yogmaya in Gokul, about 10 km from Mathura, revered as Yogmaya Janam Sthan. It is open 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with morning and evening aarti and entry is free. By the Bhagavata Purana, Yogmaya was born to Yashoda in Gokul on the very night Krishna was born in Kansa's prison in Mathura; Vasudeva carried the baby Krishna across the Yamuna and exchanged him for this infant girl, who then slipped from Kansa's grasp, rose into the sky in an eight-armed form and warned him that his slayer was already safe. To visit Gokul and the Yogmaya temple with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
Every child in Braj knows the night Krishna was born: the prison in Mathura, the chains that fell open, the river that parted and the baby carried to safety in Gokul. What fewer visitors know is that the story has a second child in it, a baby girl and that she was no ordinary infant but the Goddess Yogmaya herself. The Yogmaya Mandir in Gokul, revered as Yogmaya Janam Sthan, marks her place in that great night. This is a note of caution for searchers too: this is the Gokul temple near Mathura, not the well-known Yogmaya temple in Delhi. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul and guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them over the years. Gokul is my own home and the Yogmaya temple is part of the story I grew up inside, the story of the night Krishna was saved. Many who come to Gokul see Nand Bhavan and the ghats but never learn that the goddess who made Krishna's escape possible has her own shrine here. In this guide I will give you the timings and aarti, explain who Yogmaya is, tell the full legend of the divine exchange as the Bhagavata Purana gives it, describe the deities in the sanctum and show you how to reach the temple and fold it into a Gokul day. Everything here is from the scripture and the living tradition of my own people.
Yogmaya Mandir Timings and Aarti
The temple keeps the simple two-session rhythm of a Gokul shrine, open through the morning and again in the evening, with aarti at both times. Entry is free. Use these hours as a reliable guide and confirm on the day, as timings extend on Janmashtami and during Navratri, when a goddess temple like this is especially alive.
Session | Timing | Notes |
Morning | 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM | Morning aarti; the calmest time for darshan |
Evening | 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM | Evening aarti; a lovely time in the Gokul lanes |
Janmashtami & Navratri | Extended hours | Crowded; the most devotional time to come |
Timings are approximate and extend on festival days; entry is free. Please confirm locally before you set out.
Who Is Goddess Yogmaya?
Yogmaya is the goddess of divine illusion, the yoga-maya, the very power by which the Supreme Lord veils and reveals his play in this world. She is a form of the Devi, the great mother and in the Krishna story she is the active divine force that arranges the circumstances of his birth and protection. In the Mathura and Gokul region she is revered with deep devotion alongside Radha and Krishna, honoured as the shakti who shielded Krishna's early life. To worship Yogmaya is to bow to the protecting power behind the whole leela.
The Legend of the Divine Exchange and Krishna's Escape
The heart of this temple is one of the most dramatic episodes in all of scripture, told in the Bhagavata Purana and carried in every Brajwasi household.
The two births. On one fateful night, two children were born at once: Krishna, the eighth child of Devaki, in the prison cell of the tyrant King Kansa in Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura and a baby girl, Yogmaya, to Yashoda in Gokul across the river.
The crossing. That night the prison chains fell open and the guards slept. Vasudeva lifted the newborn Krishna in a basket and carried him out, crossing the flooded Yamuna, its waters parting to let him pass, to reach Gokul. There he laid Krishna beside Yashoda and took up her infant daughter, Yogmaya, carrying her back to the prison so that Kansa would find a child.
The warning. When Kansa learned of the birth he rushed to kill the eighth child, seizing the baby girl to dash her against the stone. But she slipped from his hands, rose into the sky in a radiant eight-armed divine form and declared that his true nemesis, the one destined to slay him, was already born and safe elsewhere. This is the moment Yogmaya reveals herself and the reason the whole escape succeeded. The tyrant's fort, Kans Qila, still stands by the Yamuna in Mathura as a reminder of the king she defied.
Inside the Sanctum: The Deities of Yogmaya Mandir
The sanctum of the temple is unusual and lovely, holding the whole family of the Gokul household around the goddess at its centre. As you take darshan you will see:
Position | Deity |
Centre | Goddess Yogmaya |
Right | Mother Yashoda |
Left | Nanda Rai (Nand Baba) |
Back | A larger black idol of Balarama |
Front | Krishna, playing the flute, in red clothes |
The sanctum arrangement; the darshan places the goddess with Krishna's foster family around her.
It is a tender grouping: the goddess who saved the child, set among the family who raised him, with the black Balarama of Dauji Baldeo behind and the flute-playing Krishna before. Few shrines gather the Gokul family quite like this.
Significance of Yogmaya in Braj
In the Brij Bhoomi, Yogmaya is not a distant goddess but the protector of Krishna's own infancy and she is revered with a devotion close to that given to Radha and Krishna themselves. Pilgrims come to her as the power of divine maya, the force that arranges and protects and ask for her shelter over their own families and children. For devotees walking the sites of Krishna's early childhood in Gokul, her shrine adds the missing piece of the story, the goddess without whom there would have been no Krishna of Vrindavan at all. To have a goddess puja offered in your family's name, our pooja services can arrange it with the local priests.
Location and How to Reach Yogmaya Mandir
The temple stands in the narrow, historic lanes of Gokul, on the eastern bank of the Yamuna, about 10 km from Mathura city. Gokul is the village where Krishna spent his infancy and the shrine sits amid its old streets, so the last approach is on foot.
From Mathura: about 10 km, roughly 25 to 35 minutes by road to Gokul, then a short walk into the lanes.
From Vrindavan: about 22 to 25 km; allow an hour by car.
From Mathura Junction railway station: around 11 to 12 km.
On foot: the Gokul lanes are narrow; park at the Gokul entrance and walk in, asking for Yogmaya Janam Sthan.
Because Gokul's streets are old and narrow, the practical way is to drive to Gokul and walk the last stretch. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi drivers know the Gokul parking and the walk in to the temples.
Combine Your Visit: A Gokul Darshan Day
Yogmaya Mandir is best seen as part of a Gokul day, the Braj of Krishna's babyhood. A gentle sequence might run:
Order | Place | Why it fits |
1 | Nand Baba's ancient 84-pillar palace, the heart of old Gokul
2 | Yogmaya Mandir | The goddess who saved Krishna, in the Gokul lanes |
3 | Nand Bhavan / Gokulnath | The homes and temples of Nand and Yashoda |
4 | Where Yashoda saw the universe in the child's mouth
5 | The soft sacred sands where Krishna and Balarama played |
A representative half-day; the Gokul shrines are humble and best seen with someone who knows the stories.
Best Time to Visit Yogmaya Mandir
The temple is open all year, but Gokul is loveliest in the cool months and most alive at its festivals, above all Janmashtami, when the very night this temple remembers is celebrated across the village.
October to March: the best season; pleasant weather for walking the Gokul lanes.
Janmashtami and Nandotsav (Aug to Sep): Gokul celebrates Krishna's birth, the exact event behind this shrine, with great fervour.
Navratri (Mar to Apr and Sep to Oct): the goddess's own festivals, a meaningful time at a Yogmaya temple.
Mornings: the calmest time for darshan before the lanes fill.

Practical Tips for Your Visit
Walk the Gokul lanes; park at the village entrance and go in on foot, as cars cannot reach the temple.
Come in the morning for a calm darshan or in the evening for the aarti in the old streets.
Take a local guide; Gokul's shrines are humble and unsignposted and the stories are the reason to come.
Dress modestly as at any goddess temple and remove footwear at the marked point.
Mind the monkeys and the narrow lanes; hold your belongings and watch your step on the old stones.
Combine with Mahavan and the ghats to make a full, meaningful Gokul day rather than a single stop.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest: Yogmaya Mandir is a small, old shrine in the narrow lanes of Gokul, not a grand temple with facilities and parking at the door. If you arrive without knowing the story of the divine exchange you may not understand what you are looking at, so go knowing it and it becomes deeply moving. Gokul as a whole is the quiet, rustic Braj of Krishna's babyhood, quite unlike the busy temple-tourism of Vrindavan and some visitors expecting the latter are taken aback. The lanes are narrow and unsignposted and a local who can walk you to the temple and tell the tale at the sanctum makes all the difference. Do watch, too, for the common confusion with the Delhi Yogmaya temple; this is the Gokul one. If you would like a comfortable base from which to see Gokul unhurried, our list of Mathura and Vrindavan hotels will help you choose.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them by now. Gokul is my own home and its shrines are places I have known all my life: I know where Yogmaya Janam Sthan sits in the lanes, the Bhagavata story at the sanctum, the right hour to come, where the car can go and where you must walk and how to arrange a proper darshan or puja with the temple priests instead of being hurried by touts. We are a Ministry of Tourism certified operator with a fleet of more than fifty vehicles, we meet you at the station or airport, we keep one clear fare with no surprises and we never charge for darshan that is free. We are rated 4.5 stars and we answer on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM.
Tip from Gurudutt: When you stand before Yogmaya in the sanctum, remember that without her there is no Krishna of Vrindavan at all. She is the baby who took Krishna's place in the tyrant's hands, the goddess who rose into the sky and turned the whole story. For those of us born in Gokul she is family, the sister who saved our Lal. Come in the morning quietly, take her darshan first and only then walk on to Nand Bhavan and the ghats. You will see the rest of Gokul differently once you have bowed to the goddess who made it all possible. |
