Haridwar to Vrindavan road routes. Approximate; distances and times vary with traffic and roadworks.
The key to a smooth drive is to avoid going through the heart of Delhi: both the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and the Yamuna Expressway let you skirt the city, which is why those routes are faster despite the NH 344G being similar in distance. Because these roads pass close to Delhi, our Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan route guide covers the final stretch in detail.
Haridwar to Vrindavan by train
The train is a restful alternative, especially if you would rather not sit in a car for most of a day. There is no large station in Vrindavan itself, so you travel from Haridwar to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj, on a train that runs via the Delhi region, taking roughly 7 to 10 hours depending on the service. From Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is only about 14 km, around 30 minutes by road. Our Mathura Junction to Vrindavan distance guide covers that final leg and we can meet your train at Mathura.
Haridwar to Vrindavan by air
Flying is not usually worth it on this route. Vrindavan has no airport of its own and the nearest major one is Delhi, about 150 km away; the nearest airport to Haridwar is Dehradun. Since a flight would still leave you a long road leg at both ends and the total distance is only around 350 km, the road or the train is almost always quicker and simpler than flying. Most Haridwar pilgrims come by car or train.
Which is the best way to travel?
For this journey, the choice is really between the car and the train. A private car is the most flexible and direct, taking you door to door, letting you leave early and use the expressways to beat the Delhi traffic and it suits families, elders and groups who want to go straight through. An overnight or day train to Mathura is comfortable and good value for solo and budget travellers, with just the short last leg to arrange. The bus, via Delhi, is the cheapest but the most tiring. For most pilgrims coming from Haridwar with a little luggage, a car straight through is the happiest choice. Our guide on how to plan a Mathura and Vrindavan trip helps you decide.
What to see when you arrive
Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best seen early and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show, along with ISKCON, Nidhivan and the old temples and the birthplace of Krishna at the Krishna Janmabhoomi in nearby Mathura. After the long drive, an early night and an early start make the most of the cool morning hours.
Best time to make the trip
The cool months of October to March are much the best for driving and for Vrindavan, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is very hot. Many pilgrims make this journey as part of a longer trip that begins with the Ganga at Haridwar and Rishikesh and ends with Krishna in Braj. If you travel in a festival season, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide for the seasons in full.
Tips for the journey
Start early to reach Vrindavan by afternoon or evening for a first darshan.
Use the Eastern Peripheral or Yamuna Expressway to bypass Delhi traffic.
Keep your FASTag recharged for the expressway tolls.
For the train, book a Haridwar to Mathura Junction ticket well ahead.
Carry water and snacks and plan rest stops on the expressway.
The honest bit
Honest words on the Haridwar to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. It is a comfortable single-day trip, around 350 km, but the one thing that can spoil it is Delhi's traffic, so take the expressways that skirt the city rather than driving through it. The distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and roadworks, so treat them as a guide. Flying is rarely worth it for this route; the car or train is simpler. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; for a stay, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels and our guide on where to stay in Vrindavan. Plan it well and you pass from the Ganga to the Yamuna in a single blessed day.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome pilgrims coming down from Haridwar and the hills every season. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you drive or train in, we meet you at Mathura Junction or arrange a clean car with a driver who knows the expressways and the Delhi bypass, carry you the last leg and around the temples in the right order, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.
Tip from Gurudutt: make this a proper Ganga-to-Yamuna pilgrimage rather than just a transfer. Take your last dip and darshan at Har Ki Pauri in the morning, set off by mid-morning on the expressway route that avoids Delhi and reach Vrindavan in time for the evening aarti on the Yamuna. To go from bathing in the Ganga to bowing before Banke Bihari in a single day is a rare blessing. If you can, give Braj two or three days once you arrive, so the long drive is well rewarded.
