Karnal to Vrindavan distance and driving routes
By road, the distance is around 281 to 301 km and the drive takes about 4.5 hours depending on the route and the traffic. The real question on this journey is how you get around Delhi: straight through on NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway or around it on one of the peripheral expressways. There are three main ways.
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via NH 44 and Yamuna Expy | 286 km | About 4 hr 27 min |
Via NH 44 and Eastern Peripheral Expy | 298 km | About 4 hr 32 min |
Via NH 44 and Western Peripheral Expy | 301 km | About 4 hr 40 min |

The NH 44 and Yamuna Expressway route is the shortest and quickest in normal conditions; the peripheral expressway routes are a touch longer but can be smoother if Delhi is heavy. A car that knows the road makes the choice for you on the day and our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way or meet you for the last leg.
Vrindavan to Karnal distance (the return journey)
The road back is much the same, around 281 to 298 km, about 4.5 to 5 hours, again turning on how you skirt Delhi. If you are planning the reverse leg, from Braj back to Karnal, these are the main routes.
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via Yamuna Expy and NH 44 | 284 km | About 4 hr 33 min |
Via Yamuna Expy, Noida-Greater Noida Expy and NH 44 | 281 km | About 4 hr 44 min |
Via Western Peripheral Expy and NH 44 | 298 km | About 4 hr 52 min |

Karnal to Vrindavan by train
The train is a comfortable way to cover the distance and it spares you the drive through Delhi. There is no railway station in Vrindavan large enough for most trains, so you travel from Karnal to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj and take a short drive on. From Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is only about 14 km, around 30 minutes by road and we can meet your train.
A few things worth knowing about the train:
How long it takes: roughly 5 to 8 hours depending on the service, several routed through Delhi.
When to travel: on such a short corridor a daytime train works well, letting you arrive in time for an evening darshan.
Book ahead: reserve your Karnal to Mathura Junction ticket in advance, especially in festival season, when seats go quickly.
The last leg: from Mathura Junction we carry you to Vrindavan and around the temples in the right order.
Karnal to Vrindavan by air
For a journey this short, flying makes no real sense. Karnal has no commercial airport of note, Vrindavan and Mathura have none of their own and the nearest major one is Delhi, about 150 km away. Since the whole drive is only about 4.5 hours, a car or train beats any flight door to door.
Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 150 km from Braj.
Delhi to Mathura/Vrindavan: about 3 to 3.5 hours by road on the Yamuna Expressway.
Our honest view: on this route the car is quickest and simplest; keep flying for those arriving from far away.
Karnal to Vrindavan by bus
Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Karnal down NH 44 toward Delhi and on to Mathura, from where a short local ride brings you to Vrindavan; the whole journey takes around 6 to 8 hours. It is cheaper than a car but longer and less comfortable and best suited to those travelling light and on a tight budget.
Which is the best way to travel?
The right choice depends on your time, budget and comfort. In short: a private car is the most flexible and easily the fastest on this short route, taking you door to door; a train to Mathura is a comfortable, good-value alternative; flying is pointless for so short a hop; and the bus is the cheapest but the slowest. The table sets them side by side.
Mode | Time | Comfort | Best for |
Private car | About 4.5 hr | High, door to door | Families, elders, groups; the fastest here |
Train | 5 to 8 hr | Good, restful | Solo and budget travellers, good value |
Flight via Delhi | Not worth it | Slower door to door | Only if arriving from far away |
Bus | 6 to 8 hr | Basic, tiring | Tight budgets, travelling light |
A quick comparison. On this short route a private car is both the fastest and the most comfortable; the train is the value pick.
Breaking the journey: Lucknow and Agra
The drive is short enough to do in one easy stretch, but if you would like a pause, Kurukshetra, the field where the Bhagavad Gita was spoken, lies just north of Karnal for those coming from further up and Delhi itself, with its great temples, sits at the midpoint. The real decision on the way is simply which side of Delhi to take: the Yamuna Expressway carries you straight down once you are past the capital and the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways let you swing around it if the city is busy.
What to see when you arrive
Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best seen early in the cool morning and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan and in nearby Mathura the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very birthplace of the Lord. Because the drive is short, you can often reach Braj by mid-morning and take darshan the same day.
Best time to make the trip
The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj itself, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer of April to June is very hot. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide for the seasons in full.
Tips for the journey
Leave Karnal early and you can reach Braj by mid-morning for a full day of darshan.
If Delhi is heavy, take the Eastern or Western Peripheral Expressway to swing around it.
The Yamuna Expressway route is shortest in normal traffic; keep an eye on live conditions.
For the train, book a Karnal to Mathura Junction ticket well ahead.
Carry water, snacks and your ID, keep some cash for tolls and take one short rest stop.
The honest bit
Honest words on the Karnal to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. Of all the drives into Braj, this is among the shortest and gentlest, an easy half-day that asks little more than an early start. The distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and roadworks and the single biggest variable is Delhi, so choose your route by the day's conditions rather than the map alone. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; for a stay, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels. Plan the journey well and the darshan at the end is worth every mile.

Tip from Gurudutt: with a drive this short, you can treat Vrindavan as an easy weekend.
