The story of Maan Sarovar: Radha's maan and tears

The word maan means the loving anger or sulk of a beloved and sarovar means a lake; Mansarovar is the lake of that maan. In the tradition, during the Rasa Lila by the Yamuna near Nidhivan and Seva Kunj, Shri Radharani was overtaken by a maan so deep that it could not be soothed and she left the circle of the raas on her own, crossed the Yamuna and came away to this solitary forest. There, in the pain of separation from Krishna, she wept and the stream of tears that flowed from her eyes gathered and became this very lake.

Krishna, the greatest relisher of love, searched for her and found her here at last. To break her maan he laid his flute and his own head at her lotus feet, admitted his fault and promised never to grieve her so again. The Gita Govinda of the poet Jayadeva sings this very moment, in which Krishna begs Radha to place her cooling, flower-soft feet upon his head, to quench the fire of love that burns within him. Consoled, Radha was reunited with Krishna in the kunja and the maan leela came to its sweet end. To this day, the old temple on the bank worships a painting of that scene, of Krishna offering his flute and his head at Radha's feet.

How Shiva became Gopeshwar at Maan Sarovar

A second wonder belongs to this lake. The sage Asuri Muni, having lost a vision of Radha and Krishna, searched the heavens in vain and at last came to Lord Shiva, who told him that Krishna was about to begin his Rasa Lila in Vrindavan and took him along to witness it. But at the rasa circle they were refused entry, for no male but Krishna may enter there; to join, they were told, they must take the form of a gopi. So they were directed to bathe in the waters of Maan Sarovar and when they rose from the lake, both Asuri Muni and Shiva had taken gopi forms. This gopi form of Shiva is the beloved Gopeshwar Mahadev, the guardian of the whole of Vraja Mandala and so this quiet lake is bound forever to one of the sweetest mysteries of Braj.

The saint Prabodhananda and the Radhavallabh connection

A third story tells of the great sage Prabodhananda Saraswati. Debating the hidden glory of the leelas of Radha and Krishna with the devotee Parmanand Das and unconvinced, he heard of Mansarovar and went there out of curiosity, staying a night alone and sitting in meditation among the grazing cows. He heard the roar of lions and the hiss of snakes, yet nothing disturbed him; then a sudden breeze brought a great silence, his heart filled with an ocean of peace and he slept, waking next day to find himself back in Mathura. So deeply had the place moved him that he sought out Parmanand Das, who brought him to Shri Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu, the founder of the Radhavallabh tradition and there he was blessed with the selfless devotion of Radha and Krishna. Thus Mansarovar is remembered as a place whose power is felt by the pure of heart. What to see at Maan Sarovar

Mansarovar is felt as much as seen, a place of water, forest and story. On a visit you will find:

• The lake: a big, deep sarovar of cold, clear water, still and mirror-like, ringed by trees.

• The Radharani temple: a white marble temple on the bank where the vigraha of Shri Radharani is worshipped.

• The worshipped painting: in the old temple, the image of Krishna placing his flute and head at Radha's feet to break her maan.

• The Vallabhacharya baithak: a seat of Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya, marking his presence at this holy place.

• The bird sanctuary and grove: a rare wetland of about five acres, shaded by pilu, kadamba and tamala trees, alive with peacocks, cuckoos, swans and deer.

Being off the main circuit and across the river, it is one of the most peaceful darshans in all of Braj, a place to sit quietly by the water and feel the leela.

Mansarovar is an open forest lake with a temple on its bank, so it may be visited throughout the day and there is no entry fee. As it lies across the Yamuna amid the forest, the cool hours are the loveliest for the visit. The table gives the general pattern.

How to reach Maan Sarovar

Mansarovar lies on the far bank of the Yamuna, opposite Vrindavan, about 10 km away by the road that goes around across the river and about 20 to 22 km from Mathura. A private car is much the easiest way today, taking you around by road to the lake. In the old way, pilgrims would cross by boat from Kesi Ghat to the opposite bank and then walk a few miles through the forest to the lake, which some still do for the beauty of it. Though it lies across the river, Mansarovar is easily joined with Vrindavan and the far-bank forests. On the same side of the Yamuna lies the forest of Belvan, where Lakshmi is said to do penance, while across the river the Yamuna-front leela spots of Vamsi Vat and the old town and the beloved Banke Bihari temple lie a short drive round. When to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for Mansarovar, pleasant for the drive and the forest, while the lake and its birds are lovely in the soft light of morning and evening. Being a place of the Rasa Lila, it feels especially dear around Sharad Purnima, the full moon of the great raas and in the holy month of Kartik and around Radhashtami.
