I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, in the very land where Raman Reti lies, so this is home ground for me in the truest sense. Guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them, I bring many to these sacred sands where the child Krishna played. From Mathura it is only a short drive of about half an hour to Raman Reti, near Gokul, across the Yamuna in the land of the Lord’s infancy. The distance is short and the road good and the real question is what awaits you there. Here is everything you need: the distance, the routes, the time and what to see at Raman Reti and around it, told by one born on this very soil. Book a car with our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service, message on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809, any day from 8 AM to 9 PM.

What awaits at Raman Reti

The short journey is worth making for what awaits at its end, for Raman Reti is among the most beloved and peaceful of all the holy places of Braj. The name means the sands, reti, of raman, of the playing or the delight, for these are the soft silver sands near Gokul where the child Krishna and his little cowherd friends played and ran and rolled in the joy of his infancy and the sand is held so sacred that pilgrims roll upon it and carry it away and it is said to be soft and cool underfoot even in the heat. Here is the great Raman Reti ashram, with its temples and its holy men and a deer sanctuary where the gentle creatures roam, recalling the woodland of the leelas. It is a serene and tender place, the very playground of the child Krishna and one of the sweetest corners of the land of his infancy. Our Raman Reti timing, Gokul guide covers the sacred sands and their timings in full.

Raman Reti with Gokul and Mahavan

The great thing to know is that Raman Reti lies in the land of Gokul and Mahavan, the country of Krishna’s infancy across the Yamuna from Mathura and is best seen with the other holy places there, for they lie close together. Nearby stands the Shri Nand Yashoda Bhavan, the very home where Krishna was raised by Nanda and Yashoda; the Gokul Nath temple, the chief temple of Gokul; the Brahmand Ghat, where Yashoda saw the universe in the child’s mouth; the Chaurasi Khambha, the ancient eighty four pillared hall of Nanda; and the ghats of the Yamuna. A visit to Raman Reti is naturally a visit to all of Gokul and Mahavan, a profound and tender day of the infancy of Krishna. Our things to do in Gokul guide covers the whole of this holy land and the three day Mathura Vrindavan pilgrimage tour takes in Gokul with the whole of Braj.

How to travel from Mathura to Raman Reti

For such a short journey across the Yamuna to the land of Gokul, a private car is far and away the best way to travel from Mathura to Raman Reti. A taxi or private car carries you straight to the sacred sands in about half an hour, waits for you at the ashram and the temples and takes you on to the Nand Yashoda Bhavan, the Gokul Nath temple and the other holy places of Gokul and Mahavan at your own pace, which buses and shared vehicles cannot do. There are buses and shared autos from Mathura towards Gokul and Mahavan, but they are slower and less direct and leave you to find the sites. For a visit that takes in Raman Reti and the whole of Gokul, the private car is the sensible and comfortable choice and the one I recommend. The table sets out the ways.

Ways from Mathura to Raman Reti. A private car is the easiest.

Distances from Raman Reti to nearby places

Once at Raman Reti, the other holy places of Gokul and Mahavan lie very close and it helps to know the short distances between them, for they are all naturally seen together. The Shri Nand Yashoda Bhavan and the Gokul Nath temple are only a kilometre or two away, in Gokul itself; the Brahmand Ghat is close by; and Mahavan, with the Chaurasi Khambha, is nearby too. The table gives the distances from Raman Reti to the nearby places, to help you plan a day of Gokul and Mahavan.

When to travel

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for a visit to Raman Reti and Gokul, pleasant for the drive and for walking the soft sands and the ashram grounds. The supreme time, as befits the land of Krishna’s infancy, is Janmashtami, the birthday of the Lord, when the whole of Gokul is at its most joyful; and the days of the childhood leelas around it are beautiful too. The peak summer of May and June is hot, though the sands of Raman Reti are famously cool and soft underfoot even then and the mornings and evenings are pleasant. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide is the seasons.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Mathura to Raman Reti journey, from one born in Gokul. The distance is short, only about fifteen kilometres and the road is good, so agree your car fare in advance and beware anyone who inflates the distance or the price. Darshan everywhere is free and no official VIP pass exists here or anywhere in Braj. Raman Reti is a place of gentle rural sanctity, the sacred sands, the ashram and the deer, rather than a grand temple or a spectacle, so come to it in a peaceful and unhurried spirit and it will give you a tenderness the great temples cannot. Walk the soft sands with respect, honour the deer sanctuary and the ashram’s quiet and cover your head from the sun. Being across the Yamuna in the land of Gokul, it is best seen by car and best joined with the Nand Yashoda Bhavan and the whole of Gokul close by rather than visited alone. Plan your car ahead, keep the fare clear and this short journey will bring you to the sweet playground of the child Krishna, one of the tenderest places in all of Braj.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar, in the very land where Raman Reti lies and there is no place I know more intimately or love more dearly. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. What a guide born here brings to the journey from Mathura to Raman Reti is the shortest route and the fair fare set in advance, the pairing of Raman Reti with the Nand Yashoda Bhavan and the whole of Gokul in the right order, the story of Krishna’s infancy told on the very sands and a car that waits and carries you between the holy places of my home ground. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: do not visit Raman Reti alone as a there and back trip from Mathura, but make a tender day of the whole of Gokul and Mahavan, the land of Krishna’s infancy, of which Raman Reti is one sweet part. Walk the soft silver sands where the child Krishna played, visit the deer at the ashram and then go the short way to the Nand Yashoda Bhavan, the very home where he was raised and the Gokul Nath temple and the Brahmand Ghat. A car to carry you between these close and holy places turns a short drive into a profound and tender day in the country of the Lord’s childhood. It is the home ground I love most to share.

Garud Govind Mandir, Vrindavan: Krishna on Garuda and the Braj Remedy for Kaal Sarp Dosh

The Garud Govind Mandir stands at Chhatikara, on the Mathura to Vrindavan road, about 7 km from the heart of Vrindavan, and enshrines a rare form of Krishna as Govind seated upon Garuda, his great eagle mount. It is the one temple in Braj where pilgrims come for relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh and Sarp Dosh, for Garuda is the king of birds and the natural subduer of serpents. In summer, darshan runs about 4:30 AM to 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM; in winter, about 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Darshan is free.
