I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Meerut and the towns of western Uttar Pradesh send many devotees down to Braj and it is one of the gentler journeys thanks to the ring of expressways around Delhi. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers at the station and on the highway: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel, where to break the journey and the easy last leg into Vrindavan.
Meerut to Vrindavan distance and driving routes
By road, the distance is around 200 to 209 km and the drive takes about 3.5 hours depending on the route and the traffic. The real question on this journey is how you get around Delhi: over the top on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway or down through the Yamuna Expressway. There are three main ways.
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via Eastern Peripheral Expy and NH 44 | 200 km | About 3 hr 27 min |
Via Yamuna Expy | 209 km | About 3 hr 33 min |
Via NH 34 | 209 km | About 4 hr 28 min |
Meerut to Vrindavan road routes. Approximate; distances and times vary with traffic and roadworks.
The Eastern Peripheral Expressway route is the quickest and smoothest, since it swings clear of Delhi's congestion and it is the one I recommend for most travellers; the plain NH 34 route is slower for the traffic. A car that knows the road picks the best line on the day and our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way or meet you for the last leg.
Vrindavan to Meerut distance (the return journey)
The road back is much the same, around 199 to 207 km, about 3.5 hours by the expressway routes. If you are planning the reverse leg, from Braj back to Meerut, these are the main routes.
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via Yamuna Expy | 207 km | About 3 hr 27 min |
Via Yamuna Expy and Eastern Peripheral Expy | 205 km | About 3 hr 27 min |
Via NH 34 | 199 km | About 4 hr 15 min |
Vrindavan to Meerut road routes. Approximate; the expressway routes are much quicker than the plain NH 34 route, which runs through heavier traffic.
Meerut to Vrindavan by train
The train is a comfortable way to cover the distance and it spares you the drive around Delhi. There is no railway station in Vrindavan large enough for most trains, so you travel from Meerut to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj and take a short drive on. From Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is only about 14 km, around 30 minutes by road and we can meet your train.
A few things worth knowing about the train:
Where to board in Meerut: trains leave from Meerut City and Meerut Cantt stations; some services route via Delhi.
How long it takes: roughly 4 to 7 hours depending on the service and connections, so check timings carefully.
Book ahead: reserve your Meerut to Mathura Junction ticket in advance, especially in festival season, when seats go quickly.
The last leg: from Mathura Junction we carry you to Vrindavan and around the temples in the right order.
Meerut to Vrindavan by air
For a journey this short, flying makes little sense. Meerut has no commercial airport of note, Vrindavan and Mathura have none of their own and the nearest major one is Delhi, about 150 km away. Since the whole drive is only about 3.5 hours on a good expressway, a car or train beats any flight door to door.
Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 150 km from Braj.
Delhi to Mathura/Vrindavan: about 3 to 3.5 hours by road on the Yamuna Expressway.
Our honest view: from Meerut, simply drive or take the train; there is no case for flying on this route.
Meerut to Vrindavan by bus
Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Meerut toward Delhi and on to Mathura, from where a short local ride brings you to Vrindavan; the whole journey takes around 5 to 7 hours. It is cheaper than a car but longer and less comfortable and best suited to those travelling light and on a tight budget.
Which is the best way to travel?
The right choice depends on your time, budget and comfort. In short: a private car is the most flexible and, on these expressway routes, the fastest door to door, keeping you clear of Delhi; a train to Mathura is a comfortable, good-value alternative; flying makes little sense on so short a route; and the bus is the cheapest but the most tiring. The table sets them side by side.
Mode | Time | Comfort | Best for |
Private car | 3.5 hr | High, door to door | Families, elders, groups; bypasses Delhi |
Train | 4 to 7 hr | Good, restful | Solo and budget travellers, good value |
Flight via Delhi | Rarely worth it | Slower door to door | Only if arriving from far away |
Bus | 5 to 7 hr | Basic, tiring | Tight budgets, travelling light |
A quick comparison. On these expressway routes a private car is usually both the most comfortable and the quickest; the train is the value pick.
Breaking the journey: Lucknow and Agra
The drive is short enough to do in one easy stretch, but if you would like a pause, the great city of Delhi sits roughly at the midpoint with its temples and sights and Agra with the Taj Mahal is only about an hour beyond Braj if you wish to extend the trip. The one real decision on the way is simply how to pass Delhi: the Eastern Peripheral Expressway carries you cleanly around it and the Yamuna Expressway then runs you straight down into Braj.
What to see when you arrive
Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best seen early in the cool morning and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan and in nearby Mathura the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very birthplace of the Lord. Because the drive is short, you can leave Meerut early and be at darshan well before midday.
Best time to make the trip
The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj itself, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer of April to June is very hot. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. Tips for the journey
Prefer the Eastern Peripheral Expressway to keep clear of Delhi's traffic.
The drive is only about 3.5 hours; leave Meerut after breakfast and reach Braj by late morning.
Avoid the plain NH 34 route unless the expressways are congested; it is noticeably slower.
For the train, book a Meerut to Mathura Junction ticket well ahead and check the connections.
Carry water, snacks and your ID, keep some cash for tolls and plan a short rest stop.
The honest bit
Honest words on the Meerut to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. This is one of the easier drives into Braj, a half-day on a good expressway that skips the worst of Delhi. The distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and roadworks and the plain NH 34 route in particular can run much slower than the expressways, so choose your road by the day. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; if you would rather stay the night, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels. Plan the journey well and the darshan at the end is worth every mile.

Tip from Gurudutt: with a drive this short and smooth, Meerut families can treat Vrindavan as an easy overnight. Leave after breakfast, reach Braj by late morning, take darshan of Banke Bihari and Prem Mandir through the day, rest the night by the Yamuna and drive home refreshed. No long haul, just a gentle little pilgrimage over the expressway.
