📌 QUICK ANSWER

The distance from Rishikesh to Vrindavan is about 361 to 394 km, taking roughly 6.5 to 8.5 hours by road, depending on the route. The quickest ways use the expressways to skirt the Delhi traffic: the Eastern Peripheral Expressway route is the shortest at about 361 km and the route via the Yamuna Expressway is the fastest at under seven hours. Coming back, Vrindavan to Rishikesh is much the same, around 382 to 404 km. If you would rather not drive, a train from Rishikesh or nearby Haridwar to Mathura Junction, then a short drive on, works well. It is a beautiful journey joining the Ganga with the Yamuna.

From the yoga capital on the Ganga to the bhakti capital on the Yamuna, from the evening Ganga aarti of Rishikesh to the lamps of Kesi Ghat, is a journey that stirs the soul. Many who come to Rishikesh for the river and the stillness go on to Vrindavan for Krishna and the road between them, whichever way you travel, is a good one. Here is everything you need, both directions covered.

Key takeaways

  • Rishikesh to Vrindavan is about 361 to 394 km, roughly 6.5 to 8.5 hours by road.

  • The Eastern Peripheral Expressway route is the shortest at about 361 km.

  • The Yamuna Expressway route is the fastest, at about 6 hours 43 minutes.

  • Coming back, Vrindavan to Rishikesh is about 382 to 404 km, around 6.5 hours the quicker way.

  • Use the expressways to bypass Delhi's heavy traffic in either direction.

  • By train, travel via Mathura Junction, then 30 minutes by road to Vrindavan.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Every season I welcome travellers coming down from Rishikesh and the hills, ready to trade the rush of the Ganga for the sweetness of the Yamuna and I help many plan the drive back up too. Here is everything you need, in both directions, told by someone who receives these travellers every week: the exact distances and routes, the train option, the best way to travel and the easy last leg into Vrindavan. To arrange a car and your Vrindavan darshan, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

In both directions the key is to avoid driving through the heart of Delhi: the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and the Yamuna Expressway let you skirt the city, which is why those routes are faster despite the plain NH 344G being similar in distance. Because these roads pass close to Delhi, our Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan route guide covers the final stretch in detail.

Rishikesh to Vrindavan by train

The train is a restful alternative. Rishikesh has a small station, but for most services it is easiest to travel from nearby Haridwar to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj, on a train that runs via the Delhi region, taking roughly 7 to 10 hours. From Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is only about 14 km, around 30 minutes by road. Our Mathura Junction to Vrindavan distance guide covers that final leg and we can meet your train at Mathura.

Rishikesh to Vrindavan by air

Flying is not usually worth it on this route. Vrindavan has no airport of its own and the nearest major one is Delhi, about 150 km away; the nearest airport to Rishikesh is Dehradun. Since a flight would still leave a long road leg at both ends and the total distance is only around 380 km, the road or the train is almost always quicker and simpler. Most Rishikesh pilgrims come by car or train.

Which is the best way to travel?

For this journey the choice is really between the car and the train. A private car is the most flexible and direct, taking you door to door, letting you leave early and use the expressways to beat the Delhi traffic and it suits families, elders and groups. An overnight or day train to Mathura is comfortable and good value for solo and budget travellers, with only the short last leg to arrange. The bus, via Delhi, is the cheapest but the most tiring. For most pilgrims coming from Rishikesh, a car straight through is the happiest choice. Our guide on how to plan a Mathura and Vrindavan trip helps you decide.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best seen early and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show, along with ISKCON, Nidhivan and the old temples. And if you loved the Ganga aarti at Rishikesh, do not miss the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat, its gentler Braj cousin. After the long drive, an early start makes the most of the cool morning hours.

Best time to make the trip

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the drive and for Vrindavan, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is very hot and the monsoon can slow the hill roads near Rishikesh. Many travellers make this journey as part of a longer spiritual trip that begins with yoga and the Ganga in Rishikesh and ends with Krishna in Braj. If you travel in a festival season, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide for the seasons in full.

Tips for the journey

  • Start early to reach Vrindavan by afternoon or evening for a first darshan.

  • Use the Eastern Peripheral or Yamuna Expressway to bypass Delhi traffic, both ways.

  • Keep your FASTag recharged for the expressway tolls.

  • For the train, book a Haridwar or Rishikesh to Mathura Junction ticket well ahead.

  • Carry water and snacks and plan rest stops on the expressway.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Rishikesh to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. It is a comfortable single-day trip, around 380 km, but the one thing that can spoil it is Delhi's traffic, so take the expressways that skirt the city rather than driving through it, in either direction. The distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and roadworks, so treat them as a guide. Flying is rarely worth it for this route; the car or train is simpler. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; for a stay, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels and our guide on where to stay in Vrindavan. Plan it well and you pass from the Ganga to the Yamuna in a single blessed day.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome pilgrims coming down from Rishikesh and the hills every season. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you drive or train in, we meet you at Mathura Junction or arrange a clean car with a driver who knows the expressways and the Delhi bypass, carry you the last leg and around the temples in the right order, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: make this a proper Ganga-to-Yamuna pilgrimage rather than just a transfer. Take your last morning by the river in Rishikesh, set off by mid-morning on the expressway route that avoids Delhi and reach Vrindavan in time for the Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat, so gentle after the roar of the Ganga. To go from the mountains and the Ganga to the flute of Krishna in a single day is a rare blessing. If you can, give Braj two or three days so the long drive is well rewarded.

Plan your trip to Vrindavan

Tell me your dates and your group and I will help you plan the journey from Rishikesh and your days in Braj, meeting you at the station or arranging a car with a driver who knows the roads and taking you around with a guide born on this soil, for one clear price.
