What is Vishakha Kund?

Vishakha Kund is a sacred kund, a holy pond, that lies within the Nidhivan, also called Nidhuvan, the mystic grove in the heart of Vrindavan, about twelve kilometres from Mathura. It is the kund of Vishakha Sakhi, one of the two foremost of the Ashta Sakhis, the eight principal companions of Radha Rani, and it holds a beautiful place in the lore of the sakhis and of the grove. Just as the Sevakunj grove holds the Lalita Kund, the kund of Lalita, so the Nidhivan holds the Vishakha Kund, the kund of Vishakha, the two chief sakhis honoured each in her own sacred water. It is a tranquil and holy spot within the wonderful old grove, dear to those who love the divine companions of Radha, and bound up with the greatest of all the mysteries of Nidhivan, the revelation of Banke Bihari. The story: the kund made by the flute

The story of the Vishakha Kund is one of the tender leelas of Krishna and the sakhis. It is told that once, in the play of the divine love in the grove, Vishakha Sakhi and the other companions of Radha grew thirsty, and there was no water at hand to quench their thirst. Then the Lord Krishna, as Shri Radha Bihari, took up his flute, his venu, and with it made manifest a kund, a spring of water, upon that very spot, and from its sweet and delicious water Vishakha and the sakhis drank and were refreshed. So the kund is called the Vishakha Kund, made by the flute of the Lord himself for the quenching of the sakhis’ thirst, and its water is revered as sweet and holy. It is a leela of the tender care of Krishna for the companions of his beloved Radha, and it is this that hallows the kund.

Vishakha Sakhi and the sakhis of Radha

To know the kund one must know Vishakha Sakhi, whose water it is. In the divine world of Braj, Radha Rani is ever surrounded by her sakhis, her dear companions, who live wholly for the joy of the love of Radha and Krishna; and of the many sakhis, eight are supreme, the Ashta Sakhis, and of these eight, two are the foremost and the dearest: Lalita and Vishakha. Vishakha Sakhi is thus among the very nearest and most beloved of all the companions of Radha, renowned in the tradition for her closeness to the divine couple and her part in their leelas. To honour Vishakha at her kund is to enter into the sweet mood of the sakhi bhava, the devotion of the loving friend who delights in serving and beholding the love of Radha and Krishna, the most selfless and tender of all the moods of Braj. The great mystery: the revelation of Banke Bihari

The greatest glory of the Vishakha Kund is that it is bound up with the revelation of Shri Banke Bihari, the most beloved deity of all Vrindavan. For it is told that the great saint and musician Swami Haridas, who dwelt in the Nidhivan and worshipped the divine couple with his heavenly song, brought forth Shri Banke Bihari ji, the enchanting form of Radha and Krishna united in one, from this very grove and its sacred kund, in answer to his devotion. From that revelation came the worship of Banke Bihari, whose temple in Vrindavan is today among the most thronged and beloved in all of India. So the Vishakha Kund and the Nidhivan are the very cradle of Banke Bihari, and this gives the quiet grove and its kund a glory beyond almost any other spot in the town. Swami Haridas of Nidhivan

The saint of the Vishakha Kund and the Nidhivan is Swami Haridas, one of the greatest of all the devotee musicians of India, who lived in the grove and worshipped Banke Bihari with his own divine songs upon the veena, so rapt in his singing that he lost all sense of himself. He was the guru of the legendary Tansen, the jewel of the court of the emperor Akbar, and of Baiju Bawra. It is told that Akbar himself, hearing Tansen’s praise of his master, came in disguise to the Nidhivan to hear Swami Haridas sing, and that when the saint sang, so heavenly was his music that the very deer and birds of the forest gathered in silence to listen. The samadhi of Swami Haridas is in the Nidhivan to this day. To visit the Vishakha Kund is to stand in the grove of this great saint, where his song once called forth the beloved Bihari.

Nidhivan: the mystic grove

The Vishakha Kund lies within the Nidhivan, and to understand the kund one must know the grove, one of the most wonderful and mysterious places in all of Vrindavan. Nidhivan is an ancient grove of low, twisting tulsi trees and old growth, revered as a place where, it is devoutly believed, the divine raas, the eternal dance of Radha and Krishna and the sakhis, takes place each night; and so it is that, by a belief held sacred and dear in Braj, the grove is emptied of all people at nightfall and closed, and it is said that no one may remain to watch, for it is told in the tradition that those who have tried have been struck blind or lost their reason, a story held in Braj as sacred folklore rather than a matter of proof. Within this wonderful grove lie the Vishakha Kund, the Rang Mahal where the divine couple are believed to rest, and the samadhi of Swami Haridas. Location and how to reach Vishakha Kund

Vishakha Kund lies within the Nidhivan grove, in the heart of the old temple town of Vrindavan, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, near the Yamuna and the other holy places of the town. Vrindavan is about twelve to fifteen kilometres from Mathura, the nearest railway junction, and about a hundred and eighty kilometres from Delhi, the nearest airport, by the Yamuna Expressway. Within Vrindavan the Nidhivan is well known and easily reached on foot or by cycle rickshaw or e rickshaw through the old lanes, and the Vishakha Kund is seen within the grove itself, along with the Rang Mahal and the samadhi of Swami Haridas. When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for a visit to Nidhivan and its Vishakha Kund, pleasant for the walk through the grove and the old lanes. The grove and its kund are open through the day and are closed, by the sacred belief, at nightfall, so a daytime visit is the way. The great festivals of Krishna and Radha, above all Janmashtami and Radha Ashtami, are the most joyful and thronged times in Vrindavan, and Sharad Purnima, the autumn full moon of the raas, has an especial resonance in this grove of the eternal dance.
