📌 QUICK ANSWER
The Vrindavan to Somnath distance is about 1,310 km by road (sources vary from roughly 1,250 to 1,350 km depending on the route) and the drive realistically takes about 20 to 22 hours, which means it is best done over two days with an overnight halt, not in a single stretch. The usual road route runs through Rajasthan and Gujarat, via Jaipur, Udaipur, Ahmedabad and Rajkot. There is no direct train or flight; most travellers go by train or fly via Delhi to an airport near Somnath such as Diu or Rajkot, then drive. A Word From Your Guide
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul and guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them over the years, including many who set out from Braj to the great shrines of Gujarat. This is one of the longest pilgrim routes in the west and the single most useful thing I can tell you is to respect the distance: it is about 1,300 km, a genuine two-day drive, so do not plan it as a quick hop. In this guide I will give you the honest road routes and times, the train and flight picture, how to break the journey and what to see in Vrindavan before you leave. Figures for a route this long vary between sources and change with traffic, so always check live before you travel.
Vrindavan to Somnath Distance by Road
Because Somnath lies far to the south-west on the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat, the road journey from Vrindavan crosses the whole of Rajasthan and much of Gujarat. The main routes and their approximate distances:
Route | Approx. distance | Approx. drive |
Via Jaipur, Udaipur, Ahmedabad and Rajkot (NH 48) | 1,300 km | 20 to 22 hrs |
Via Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Rajkot | 1,280 km | 20 to 22 hrs |
Via Kishangarh / Ajmer, Ahmedabad and Rajkot | 1,320 km | 21 to 22 hrs |
Figures are approximate, vary by source and traffic and all assume a two-day drive with an overnight halt. Check live before you travel.
Whichever route you take, the spine of the journey is the great NH 48 corridor down through Rajasthan to Ahmedabad, then on across Saurashtra via Rajkot and Junagadh to the coast at Somnath. For a drive this long, a comfortable car and a driver who can share the hours are essential. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi can arrange a vehicle and driver and help you plan the overnight stop.
Breaking the Journey: Where to Stop Overnight
At around 1,300 km, this journey must be broken and the good news is that the route passes some of India's finest cities for an overnight halt:
Udaipur: the beautiful lake city of Rajasthan, a wonderful place to spend the night roughly halfway.
Ahmedabad: the great city of Gujarat, well past the midpoint, with plenty of hotels and food.
Jaipur: for those who prefer to stop earlier, the Pink City is an easy first-night halt.
Many pilgrims make the drive a proper road trip of three or four days, taking in Udaipur or Ahmedabad on the way. If you are planning from the Delhi side rather than Braj, see our companion guide to the Delhi to Somnath distance for more on the Gujarat leg.
Vrindavan to Somnath by Train
There is no quick direct train for this very long route. The nearest railhead to Somnath is Veraval Junction, about 7 km away and Somnath has its own small station too. The railhead for Vrindavan is Mathura Junction, about 15 km away.
Direct trains: a few long-distance trains connect the Mathura and Veraval regions, but they take well over 20 hours; services are limited.
The common way: travel via Delhi or Ahmedabad, often combining a train to a Gujarat hub like Ahmedabad or Rajkot with an onward train to Veraval.
Booking: check live times, availability and the best routing on the IRCTC website or app, as schedules change seasonally.
Train numbers and times vary and change often, so we do not list specific trains here; always confirm on IRCTC before you plan.
Vrindavan to Somnath by Air
For a journey this long, flying saves the most time, though it needs a connection via Delhi and a road transfer at the Gujarat end.
Near Vrindavan: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 150 km away, is the main airport, with Noida (Jewar) and Agra growing as options.
Nearest airports to Somnath: Diu, about 90 km away and Rajkot, about 190 km; Keshod is a small closer airfield with limited flights.
The practical air option: fly from Delhi to Diu or Rajkot, then drive to Somnath. This is often the fastest way overall, in roughly 10 to 12 hours door to door.
For those short on time, the fly-via-Delhi option is usually the quickest way to reach Somnath from Braj.
The Best Way to Travel: A Comparison
Here is how the options compare for a pilgrim making this long journey:
Mode | Time | Comfort | Best for |
Car (two days) | 20 to 22 hrs over 2 days | High; stops and Udaipur en route | Road-trip pilgrims, families |
Train | 20+ hrs; often via Delhi/Ahmedabad | Moderate; long but restful | Budget and patient travellers |
Air (via Delhi) | 10 to 12 hrs door to door | Fastest overall | Those short on time |
Bus | 30+ hrs, via Jaipur/Ahmedabad | Basic; very long | Budget travellers only |
A general comparison for pilgrims; the right choice depends on your days, group and budget.
Pair Somnath With Dwarka: A Krishna and Shiva Yatra
Here is the real reason this journey is so loved. Somnath, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, lies on the same Saurashtra coast as Dwarka, the kingdom of Lord Krishna and most pilgrims who make the long trip from Braj combine the two into one great Krishna and Shiva yatra. There is a beautiful completeness to it: the devotee leaves the Braj of Krishna's childhood, honoured in Mathura at the Dwarkadhish temple and travels to see Krishna's own Dwarka and to bow at the great Shiva shrine of Somnath. The Shiva of Braj, too, is honoured at shrines like Gopeshwar Mahadev in Vrindavan, so the whole journey weaves Krishna and Shiva together.
What to See in Vrindavan Before You Leave
Before setting out on such a long pilgrimage, give Braj its due. The essential darshans in Vrindavan are:
Banke Bihari Temple: the most beloved temple of Vrindavan, the spiritual heart of the town.
Prem Mandir: the magnificent marble temple with its evening light show and gardens.
ISKCON Vrindavan: the Krishna-Balaram Mandir, serene and welcoming, especially for first-timers.
Take the blessings of Braj first and let the long road to Somnath be a pilgrimage from its very start.
Best Time to Make the Trip
Given the distance and the Gujarat coast at the far end, the season matters for this journey.
October to March: the best window; cool, pleasant weather for the long drive, for Braj and for the coast at Somnath.
Mahashivratri (Feb or Mar): the great night of Shiva, a deeply auspicious but very crowded time at the Somnath Jyotirlinga.
Kartik Purnima (Nov): a sacred time at Somnath and along the Gujarat coast.
April to June: very hot across Rajasthan and Gujarat; travel is harder, so prefer the cooler months.

Practical Tips for the Journey
Plan two days, not one; at 1,300 km, a single-day drive is unsafe and exhausting. Book an overnight halt at Udaipur or Ahmedabad.
Consider flying if time is short; Delhi to Diu or Rajkot, then the road is far quicker than driving.
Combine with Dwarka; since you are going all that way, add Krishna's Dwarka for a complete yatra.
Keep FASTag and cash ready for the many tolls across Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Carry water, snacks and medicines and share the driving on such a long route.
Check live routing and weather before you set out, as figures and roads change.
The Honest Bit
Let me be very honest, because this is where many travellers go wrong: Vrindavan to Somnath is about 1,300 km and that is a serious journey, not a day trip or even a comfortable single day's drive. Anyone who tells you it is a few hours is mistaken and the figures online vary a good deal, from roughly 1,250 to 1,350 km and from very optimistic driving times to the realistic 20-plus hours, so treat them all as approximate and plan generously. My sincere advice is to either fly via Delhi if your days are few or make a proper two or three-day road trip of it, breaking at Udaipur or Ahmedabad and ideally adding Dwarka. Do not attempt the whole drive in one go. If you would like a comfortable base at the Braj end before you set out, our list of Mathura and Vrindavan hotels will help you choose.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them by now. While our home is Braj, we help pilgrims plan the great journeys that begin here, including the long road to Gujarat. We can give you an honest plan for the Somnath trip, a comfortable car and driver for the Braj leg and beyond and a proper darshan of Vrindavan and Mathura before you set out and we will tell you truthfully when flying is the better choice. We keep one clear fare with no surprises and we never charge you for darshan that is free. We are a Ministry of Tourism certified operator with a fleet of more than fifty vehicles, rated 4.5 stars and we answer on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM.
Tip from Gurudutt: Do not think of Vrindavan to Somnath as a distance to be conquered, but as a pilgrimage to be savoured. It is 1,300 km across two great states, so make it a journey: take darshan in Braj, drive down through Rajasthan with a night at Udaipur, bow at Somnath by the sea and add Krishna's Dwarka while you are in Gujarat. Pilgrims who rush it arrive exhausted; those who give it three or four unhurried days come home having made one of the finest Krishna and Shiva yatras in all of India. Respect the distance and it rewards you. |
