Where is Vrindavan on the map of India?
Vrindavan lies in the north of India, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, on the west bank of the river Yamuna, at roughly 27.58 degrees north and 77.70 degrees east, on the flat Yamuna plain about 170 m above the sea. It sits in the heart of Braj, the land of Krishna's childhood, just 12 to 15 km north of Mathura, his birthplace. It is about 150 km south of Delhi, an easy three hours by the Yamuna Expressway and about 70 to 78 km from Agra and the Taj Mahal. Our guides on the Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan route and the Mathura Junction to Vrindavan distance cover the arrival legs in full.
Understanding the Vrindavan city map: the main areas
On the map, Vrindavan divides naturally into two parts, with a ring road around them. Knowing these three makes the whole town easy to picture:
The old town (Yamuna side): a dense knot of narrow lanes along the river, holding the oldest and most beloved temples, the ghats and the heart of pilgrim Vrindavan.
The temple road (Chhatikara side): the newer, wider western side near the Chhatikara entrance from the highway, with the big modern temples and most hotels.
The Parikrama Marg: the circular pilgrim road, about 10 to 11 km, that rings the whole town along the Yamuna and back, walked by devotees.
Most visitors enter from Chhatikara, off the Delhi-Mathura highway, where the great gateway of Vrindavan stands and move inward toward the old town and the river.
Key landmarks on the Vrindavan map
Here is where the famous places sit. In the old town, by the Yamuna, are the most beloved shrines: the Banke Bihari temple at the very heart, the mystical grove of Nidhivan and Seva Kunj close by, the old Goswami temples in the surrounding lanes and the beautiful Kesi Ghat on the river. On the newer temple road toward Chhatikara stand the grand Prem Mandir, the ISKCON Krishna Balaram temple on the Bhaktivedanta Swami Marg nearby and the towering Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir, set to be the tallest temple of all. The grand Rangji temple sits between the two areas.
The Vrindavan Parikrama Marg
The Parikrama Marg is the sacred circular road that pilgrims walk around the whole of Vrindavan, about 10 to 11 km all the way round, many of them barefoot, especially in the holy month of Kartik. It follows the Yamuna along the old-town side and loops back around the town, passing the ghats and countless temples and ashrams along the way. Walking at an easy pace takes a few hours and it is one of the most peaceful ways to feel the shape and spirit of the town, best done in the cool of the early morning.
Distances across Vrindavan

How to get around Vrindavan
The single most useful thing to know is that cars cannot enter the narrow inner lanes of the old town; they drop you at the edge for a short walk in. So the best way to travel is a car that carries you between the areas and waits, with e-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws and your own feet for the lanes. E-rickshaws are everywhere and cheap; agree the fare before you sit. Google Maps works well for the main roads and the temple road, though it struggles in the tightest old-town gullies, where a local's knowledge or a guide, saves you time. For planning the whole trip, see our guide on how to plan a Mathura and Vrindavan trip.
Where Vrindavan sits in Braj
Vrindavan is one town in the wider sacred landscape of Braj, which spreads around it: Mathura just to the south, Gokul and Mahavan across and down the Yamuna, Govardhan to the west and Nandgaon and Barsana further west again. Seeing how they fit together helps you plan a trip beyond the town itself. Our Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul and Barsana map lay out the whole region.
Best areas to stay on the map
Where you stay shapes your days. The temple road and Chhatikara side has the most comfortable hotels and easy parking, a short drive from the old town; staying there suits families and those who value comfort. Staying in or near the old town puts you within walking reach of Banke Bihari and the ghats, best for early darshan, though the lanes are crowded. See our Mathura Vrindavan hotels and our guide on where to stay in Vrindavan to choose.
Tips for navigating Vrindavan
Picture the town as an old town by the river and temple road near Chhatikara, with the Parikrama Marg around.
Use a car between areas and an e-rickshaw or your feet in the lanes.
Start early for Banke Bihari and the old town, before the crowds and traffic.
Keep Prem Mandir and ISKCON, on the temple road, for later in the day or evening.
Agree e-rickshaw fares in advance and let your car wait at the edge.
The honest bit
Honest words on the Vrindavan map, from one born in Braj. No paper or phone map fully captures the old town; its lanes are a joyful maze and even Google Maps can lose its way in the tightest of them, so a little patience or a local guide goes a long way. Traffic near the temples is heavy on weekends and festivals, so plan the old town for the early morning. Darshan is free everywhere and there is no VIP pass, so ignore anyone selling one. A car that knows where to drop you and waits, spares you the worst of the crush and the touts. The simple picture, river and old town on one side, temple road and hotels on the other, Parikrama Marg around and Vrindavan quickly becomes easy to navigate.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I know every lane and shortcut of Vrindavan by heart. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. What we bring is a route planned around the real map and the temple timings, the car that drops you at the right edge and waits, the darshans in the right order to avoid the crowds and the traffic and honest guidance without touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.
Tip from Gurudutt: hold this simple map in your head and you will never feel lost. The Yamuna and the old town, with Banke Bihari, the Goswami temples, Nidhivan and Kesi Ghat, lie on one side; the temple road near Chhatikara, with Prem Mandir, ISKCON and the hotels, lies on the other; and the Parikrama Marg rings them both. Do the old town early on foot, the temple road later by car and, if you can, walk a stretch of the Parikrama Marg at dawn. With that picture, the maze becomes a map. It is how I help every visitor find their way.
