Chandigarh to Vrindavan distance and driving routes
By road, the distance is around 410 to 454 km and the drive takes about 6.5 to 7 hours depending on the route and the traffic. The great advantage of this journey is the Western Peripheral Expressway, which lets you skirt Delhi entirely and keep moving. There are three main ways.
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via Western Peripheral Expy | 429 km | About 6 hr 29 min |
Via NH 44 and Yamuna Expy | 411 km | About 6 hr 47 min |
Via NH 344G | 454 km | About 6 hr 56 min |

The Western Peripheral Expressway route is the quickest and the least stressful, since it keeps you clear of Delhi's congestion and it is the one I recommend for most travellers. A car that knows the road makes the whole thing effortless and our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way or meet you for the last leg.
Vrindavan to Chandigarh distance (the return journey)
The road back is much the same, around 410 to 426 km, about 6.5 to 7 hours by the expressway routes, with the plain NH 44 route slower for the Delhi traffic. If you are planning the reverse leg, from Braj back to Chandigarh, these are the main routes.
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via Yamuna Expy and NH 44 | 410 km | About 6 hr 48 min |
Via NH 44 | 420 km | About 8 hr 28 min |
Via Western Peripheral Expy | 426 km | About 6 hr 50 min |
Vrindavan to Chandigarh road routes. Approximate; the expressway routes are much quicker than the plain NH 44 route, which runs through Delhi traffic.
Chandigarh to Vrindavan by train
The train is a comfortable way to cover the distance and it spares you the drive. There is no railway station in Vrindavan large enough for most trains, so you travel from Chandigarh to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj and take a short drive on. From Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is only about 14 km, around 30 minutes by road and we can meet your train.
A few things worth knowing about the train:
How long it takes: roughly 7 to 9 hours depending on the service, some running direct and others via Delhi.
When to travel: a daytime or overnight train both work well on this shorter corridor; choose by your own comfort.
Book ahead: reserve your Chandigarh to Mathura Junction ticket in advance, especially in festival season, when berths go quickly.
The last leg: from Mathura Junction we carry you to Vrindavan and around the temples in the right order.
Chandigarh to Vrindavan by air
Chandigarh has its own airport, but for a journey this short, flying rarely saves time once you count check-in, the connection and the road leg at the far end. Vrindavan and Mathura have no airport of their own and the nearest major one is Delhi, about 150 km away.
Chandigarh to Delhi: a very short flight, but with airport time it seldom beats the direct drive.
Delhi to Mathura/Vrindavan: about 3 to 3.5 hours by road on the Yamuna Expressway.
Our honest view: on this route a private car or a train is usually simpler and cheaper than flying.
Chandigarh to Vrindavan by bus
Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Chandigarh toward Delhi and on to Mathura, from where a short local ride brings you to Vrindavan; the whole journey takes around 8 to 10 hours. It is cheaper than a car or flight but longer and less comfortable and best suited to those travelling light and on a tight budget.
Which is the best way to travel?
The right choice depends on your time, budget and comfort. In short: a private car is the most flexible and, on this expressway route, often the fastest door to door, keeping you clear of Delhi; a train to Mathura is a comfortable, good-value alternative; flying makes little sense for so short a hop; and the bus is the cheapest but the most tiring. The table sets them side by side.
Mode | Time | Comfort | Best for |
Private car | 6.5 to 7 hr | High, door to door | Families, elders, groups; bypasses Delhi |
Train | 7 to 9 hr | Good, restful | Solo and budget travellers, good value |
Flight via Delhi | Half a day door to door | Rarely worth it here | Only if already flying in from afar |
Bus | 8 to 10 hr | Basic, tiring | Tight budgets, travelling light |
A quick comparison. On this short expressway route a private car is usually both the most comfortable and the quickest; the train is the value pick.
Breaking the journey: Lucknow and Agra
The drive is short enough to do in one easy go, but it is far sweeter if you make a stop. Kurukshetra, the very field where the Bhagavad Gita was spoken, lies close to the route on NH 44, with its Brahma Sarovar and Jyotisar and it makes a deeply fitting pause on the way to Krishna's own land, the Gita at the start and the Lord's Vrindavan at the end. The Western Peripheral Expressway then carries you neatly around Delhi and onto the Yamuna Expressway for the run into Braj.
What to see when you arrive
Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best seen early in the cool morning and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan and in nearby Mathura the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very birthplace of the Lord. Plan an early start after your journey to make the most of the cool morning hours, before the temples close for their midday rest.
Best time to make the trip
The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj itself, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer of April to June is very hot. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. Tips for the journey
Prefer the Western Peripheral Expressway route to keep clear of Delhi's traffic.
The drive is only about 6.5 hours; leave Chandigarh after breakfast and reach Braj for the evening aarti.
Consider a stop at Kurukshetra, the land of the Gita, on the way down.
For the train, book a Chandigarh to Mathura Junction ticket well ahead.
Carry water, snacks and your ID, keep some cash for tolls and plan a rest stop on the highway.
The honest bit
Honest words on the Chandigarh to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. Of all the long-distance drives into Braj, this is one of the gentlest, comfortably done in a single morning if you take the expressway and leave Delhi's snarl behind. The distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and roadworks, so treat them as a guide, not a promise; the plain NH 44 route in particular can be much slower for the Delhi stretch. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; for a stay, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels. Plan the journey well and the darshan at the end is worth every mile.

Tip from Gurudutt: because this drive is short, you have the luxury of an unhurried day. Leave Chandigarh after breakfast, pause at Kurukshetra to touch the field of the Gita, take the expressway around Delhi and roll into Vrindavan in good time for the evening aarti at Banke Bihari. There is no need to rush a journey of this kind.
