Chitrakoot to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance is around 499 to 529 km, and the drive takes about 7.5 to 8 hours depending on the route and the traffic. The new Bundelkhand Expressway, running from near Chitrakoot towards Agra, is the spine of every route, and joined to the Agra-Lucknow Expressway or NH 19 it carries you swiftly to Braj. There are three main ways.

The route combining the Bundelkhand Expressway with the Agra-Lucknow Expressway is the quickest, and the one I recommend, since the expressways are smooth and fast. The route via NH 19 is shortest in distance but a little slower. Vrindavan to Chitrakoot distance (the return journey)

The road back is much the same, around 500 to 520 km, about 7.5 to 8 hours. If you are planning the reverse leg, from Braj back to Chitrakoot, these are the main routes.

Chitrakoot to Vrindavan by train

The train is a comfortable way to cover this long distance, and it spares you the drive. There is no railway station in Vrindavan large enough for most trains, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj, and take a short drive on. From Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is only about 14 km, around 30 minutes by road, and we can meet your train.

A few things worth knowing about the train:

• Where to board: trains leave from Chitrakoot Dham Karwi station towards Mathura Junction, some via Jhansi or Kanpur.

• How long it takes: roughly 9 to 12 hours depending on the service and route; overnight trains are convenient.

• Book ahead: reserve your Chitrakoot to Mathura Junction ticket in advance, especially in festival season, when seats vanish.

• The last leg: from Mathura Junction we carry you to Vrindavan and around the temples in the right order.

Chitrakoot to Vrindavan by air

For this distance, flying is rarely practical. Chitrakoot has only a small airstrip with very limited connectivity, and Vrindavan and Mathura have no airport of their own; the nearest major one is Delhi, from where you would still drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj. Since the road journey from Chitrakoot is now much faster on the expressway, a car or an overnight train serves far better than trying to fly.

• Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 150 km from Braj.

• Chitrakoot has only very limited air connectivity, so flying is rarely an option.

• Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will be closer to Braj once fully operational.

• Our honest view: from Chitrakoot, the expressway drive or an overnight train is by far the simplest.

Chitrakoot to Vrindavan by bus

Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Chitrakoot towards Kanpur, Agra and Mathura, taking around 10 to 12 hours, from where a short local ride brings you to Vrindavan. It is cheaper than a car but long and tiring over such a distance, and best suited to those travelling light and on a tight budget.

Which is the best way to travel?

The right choice depends on your time, budget and comfort. In short: a private car is the most flexible and, on the expressway, comfortable and direct, taking you door to door; a train to Mathura is a restful, good-value alternative, especially overnight; flying is rarely practical; and the bus is the cheapest but the most tiring. Breaking the journey: Lucknow and Agra

The Bundelkhand and Agra-Lucknow Expressways are long, smooth runs with clean, modern rest stops for food and fuel, so a couple of short breaks for chai and a stretch are all you need. Agra, with the Taj Mahal, sits near the western end of the route, so many travellers pause there to add the Taj to their Braj trip, a natural and beautiful stop on the way. Plan one or two easy breaks and the long drive passes comfortably.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best seen early in the cool morning, and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan, and in nearby Mathura the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very birthplace of the Lord. After a long journey, an overnight stay lets you take the darshan unhurried.

Best time to make the trip

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj itself, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer of April to June is very hot for so long a drive. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded, and book ahead. Tips for the journey

• Take the Bundelkhand and Agra-Lucknow Expressway route; it is the fastest and smoothest.

• Start early for a long day's drive, or travel overnight by train.

• Plan one or two short breaks at expressway rest stops for chai and fuel.

• Consider pausing at Agra for the Taj Mahal, near the western end of the route.

• Book trains well ahead, especially around Chitrakoot's Amavasya melas and the Braj festivals.
