Barsana, the village of Radha, is one of the most beloved corners of Braj, and I take many Delhi travellers there, especially for Radhashtami and the famous Lathmar Holi. Because it lies a little off the main road, knowing the right route matters. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers on the highway and at the foot of the hill: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel, where to break the journey, and how to reach the hilltop temple.

Delhi to Barsana distance and driving routes

By road, the distance is around 122 to 151 km, and the drive takes about 3 to 3.5 hours depending on the route and the traffic. The key thing to know is that Barsana lies west of Mathura, so the direct route runs down the Delhi-Chennai Highway and NH 44, not the Yamuna Expressway. There are three main ways.

The Delhi-Chennai Highway route is the shortest and quickest, and the one I recommend. Note that the Yamuna Expressway route, though a fine fast road, is the longest here at about 151 km, because Barsana lies west of Mathura, so taking the expressway means going down to Mathura and doubling back. Barsana to Delhi distance (the return journey)

The road back is much the same, around 121 to 150 km, about 3 to 3.5 hours. If you are planning the reverse leg, from Barsana back to Delhi, these are the main routes.

Delhi to Barsana by train

The train is a comfortable way to cover most of the distance, though Barsana itself has no major station. You travel to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj, or to the smaller Kosi Kalan station which is a little nearer, and drive on to Barsana. From Mathura Junction, Barsana is about 42 km, roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter by road, and we can meet your train.

A few things worth knowing about the train:

• Where to board: Delhi's stations have frequent trains to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj.

• Nearer station: Kosi Kalan, a smaller station about 20 km from Barsana, is closer but has fewer services.

• How long it takes: roughly 2 to 4 hours from Delhi to Mathura, then about an hour on to Barsana.

• The last leg: from Mathura Junction or Kosi Kalan we carry you to Barsana and its hilltop temple.

Delhi to Barsana by air

For a journey this short, flying makes no sense at all. Delhi has the nearest major airport, but Barsana and the whole Braj region have none of their own, and the road trip is only about three hours. A car is by far the best way; the train is a good alternative.

• From any airport you would still drive to Barsana, so a car from Delhi is simplest.

Delhi to Barsana by bus

Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Delhi towards Mathura and Kosi Kalan, from where a local ride brings you to Barsana; the whole journey takes around 4 to 6 hours. It is cheaper than a car but longer and less comfortable, and since Barsana is off the main road, a car is far more convenient for reaching the village and the hill.

Which is the best way to travel?

The right choice depends on your time, budget and comfort. In short: a private car is by far the most flexible and direct, taking you to the very foot of the hill; a train to Mathura and a car onward is a good-value alternative; flying makes no sense on so short a route; and the bus is cheapest but awkward for reaching an off-road village. A quick comparison. For an off-road hill village like Barsana, a private car is easily the best; the train plus a car is the value pick.

Breaking the journey: Lucknow and Agra

The drive is short and mostly on good highway, so a single break for chai and a stretch is all you need. Many travellers combine Barsana with the nearby village of Nandgaon, Krishna's own village just 8 km away, and with Govardhan on the way, making a fuller Braj day of it. If you are coming for Lathmar Holi or Radhashtami, start very early, as the roads and the village fill quickly on those days.

What to see when you arrive

Barsana's crown is the Radha Rani temple, also called the Shriji or Ladli Ji temple, atop Bhanugarh hill, reached by a climb of stone steps with sweeping views over the Braj plain. Nearby stands the Maan Mandir, and just 8 km away lies Krishna's village of Nandgaon. Do not miss the lovely Prem Sarovar, the lake of love, close by. Barsana is at its most magical during Lathmar Holi and Radhashtami.

Best time to make the trip

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for the climb up Barsana's hill, while the summer of April to June is fierce. But Barsana's two great seasons are its festivals: the world-famous Lathmar Holi in February or March, when the women of Barsana playfully drive off the men of Nandgaon with sticks, and Radhashtami, Radha's birthday, the village's biggest celebration. • Do not take the Yamuna Expressway for Barsana; it is longer, since the village lies west of Mathura.
