📌 QUICK ANSWER

Banke Bihari temple is in Vrindavan, about 150 km from Delhi, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours by car on the Yamuna Expressway or a train to Mathura Junction (about 2 to 3.5 hours) and a 30-minute drive on. The temple sits in Vrindavan's narrow old lanes where cars cannot reach, so you park at a distance and walk or take an e-rickshaw, the last 500 metres to a kilometre. Plan to arrive for the morning darshan window, roughly 7:45 am in summer or 8:45 am in winter. To arrange a car and darshan, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Banke Bihari is the most beloved temple of Vrindavan and reaching it from Delhi is easy, until the very last stretch, which surprises many first-timers. The drive down is a smooth three hours, but the temple itself hides in a maze of narrow lanes where no car can go, so the final few hundred metres are on foot. Here, from a Braj-born guide who walks these lanes every week, is exactly how to reach Banke Bihari from Delhi and how to arrive at the right hour for darshan. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Banke Bihari temple is in Vrindavan, about 150 km and 3 to 3.5 hours from Delhi by car.

  • By train, reach Mathura Junction, then drive about 30 minutes to Vrindavan.

  • Cars cannot reach the temple; park at a distance and walk or take an e-rickshaw the last stretch.

  • Darshan opens around 7:45 am in summer and 8:45 am in winter, with a long midday closure.

  • Go on a weekday morning; weekends bring Delhi crowds many times larger.

  • There is no VIP darshan or online booking; entry is free and walk-in only.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them and I take families to Banke Bihari almost daily. The journey from Delhi is simple, but the last lane and the darshan timings are where trips go right or wrong. Everything below is how I would plan it for my own family, so you reach the temple smoothly and at the best hour.

Delhi to Banke Bihari: distance and travel options

Banke Bihari sits in Vrindavan, about 150 km south of Delhi, an easy half-day return or a comfortable day trip. You can come by car, by train or by bus; the table compares them and the sections below give the details.

Ways to reach Banke Bihari from Delhi. Times are approximate and vary with traffic.

A car is the easiest way, taking you almost to the temple's doorstep. From Delhi you take the Noida and Yamuna Expressway most of the way to Vrindavan, a smooth, fast, tolled road, in about 3 to 3.5 hours. The car brings you into Vrindavan and drops you at the nearest point it can reach, from where you walk in. A driver who knows the town will drop you at the best access point and wait, which saves a great deal of confusion. Book a clean, air-conditioned car through our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service and be dropped as close as the lanes allow.

By train

The train is a comfortable, good-value option. There is no station in Vrindavan large enough for most trains, so you travel from Delhi to Mathura Junction, the main railhead, in about two to three and a half hours, then drive the 14 km to Vrindavan, about 30 minutes and walk the final lanes to the temple. Fast trains like the Shatabdi, Taj Express and Kota Jan Shatabdi reach Mathura quickly; we can meet your train and carry you on to the temple.

By bus

Buses are the budget choice. State and private buses run from Delhi to Mathura, taking about four to five hours, from where a local auto or e-rickshaw brings you to Vrindavan and the temple lanes. It is cheaper than a car but slower and less comfortable and best for those travelling light and on a tight budget.

The last lane: reaching the temple itself

This is the part that catches everyone out. Banke Bihari stands deep in Vrindavan's old quarter, in a warren of narrow lanes lined with shops, where cars and large vehicles simply cannot go. However you arrive, the final stretch is on foot.

  • Cars and taxis drop you at the nearest accessible point, often near Vidyapeeth crossing or the edge of the old town.

  • From there it is about a 500 metre to 1 km walk through the bazaar lanes to the temple gate.

  • E-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws cover part of the way, but the final narrow stretch is always walked.

  • The lanes are crowded, especially late morning and on weekends; go early for an easier walk.

  • Leave shoes at the stalls near the temple and keep phones and valuables secure in the crush.

Banke Bihari darshan timings

Arrive at the right hour, because Banke Bihari keeps its own schedule and closes for a long midday break. The timings shift by an hour between summer and winter.

Summer (March to October)

7:45 AM to 12:00 PM

Winter (November to February)

8:45 AM to 1:00 PM

4:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Banke Bihari darshan timings. Indicative and can change on Ekadashi, festivals and special days; always confirm before travelling.

A few things make this temple unusual: there is no daily Mangala Aarti, as the Lord is believed to wake late; darshan is given as jhanki, the curtain drawn and opened every few minutes; entry is free with no VIP pass or online booking; and cameras and phones are not used inside. For the full detail, see our guide to Banke Bihari temple timings and significance.

The best time to go and beating the crowds

Timing your visit matters as much as the temple's own timing. The calmest darshan is in the first hour or two after the morning opening, on a weekday; Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are best. Weekends are the busiest, when Delhi day-trippers can multiply the crowd many times over and festival days, Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Holi and Kartik, are busier still. Come in the cool season of October to March for comfort, but arrive at opening time to stay ahead of the crowds. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar to plan.

Temples near Banke Bihari

The beauty of Banke Bihari's location is that several other jewels sit within a short walk of it, so you can see many on one trip through the lanes.

Tips for reaching Banke Bihari from Delhi

  • Leave Delhi early, by six or seven, to reach for the morning darshan window.

  • Come by car for the smoothest door-to-lane journey or a fast morning train to Mathura.

  • Confirm the season's timings before you set off; summer and winter differ by an hour.

  • Wear easy shoes you can slip off and travel light through the crowded lanes.

  • Prefer a weekday, especially Tuesday or Wednesday, over a weekend.

  • Keep phones and wallets secure; the last lane is crowded and there is no VIP shortcut.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. Reaching Banke Bihari from Delhi is easy; the two things that trip people up are the timings and the last lane. Arrive during the midday closure and you will find locked doors; arrive at a weekend noon and you will face a crush in the lanes. The timings here are approximate and shift on Ekadashi and festival days, so confirm before you travel. Beware the touts near the lane who promise VIP darshan, there is none; entry is free and walk-in. Come early on a weekday, walk the last stretch with patience and Banke Bihari gives you a darshan you will never forget. If you would rather stay overnight, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I take pilgrims to Banke Bihari almost every day. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Delhi, drive you down, drop you at the closest point to the lane, guide you on foot at the right hour and take you to the temples around it in the right order, with no touts and no false VIP promises. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: the whole visit turns on arriving at the opening hour. Leave Delhi by six, reach Vrindavan before the morning crowd, walk the still-cool lanes to the gate and take the first jhanki of the day when the curtain draws back, quiet, unhurried and close. An hour later the same lane is a shoulder-to-shoulder river. The early start is everything.

Plan your trip to Banke Bihari

"We booked a same day Banke Bihari and Vrindavan trip with Experience My India from Delhi. The driver arrived on time and knew exactly where to drop us because cars cannot go into the temple's narrow lanes. The team also guided us about the morning darshan timing and nearby temples. Very smooth service and highly recommended."

How to Reach Vrindavan from Mumbai: Flights, Trains and the Best Way to Travel

There are two good ways to reach Vrindavan from Mumbai. The fastest is to fly Mumbai to Delhi, about 2 hours 10 minutes, then drive around 3 to 3.5 hours down the Yamuna Expressway to Braj, roughly half a day door to door. The most restful and best value is a direct train to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj, taking about 15 to 24 hours overnight; the fastest is the August Kranti Rajdhani in under 15 hours.
