📌 QUICK ANSWER

There are two good ways to reach Vrindavan from Mumbai. The fastest is to fly Mumbai to Delhi, about 2 hours 10 minutes, then drive around 3 to 3.5 hours down the Yamuna Expressway to Braj, roughly half a day door to door. The most restful and best value is a direct train to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj, taking about 15 to 24 hours overnight; the fastest is the August Kranti Rajdhani in under 15 hours. From Mathura Junction or Delhi, Vrindavan is a short drive on. To arrange your pickup and darshan, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Mumbai to Vrindavan is a long journey, close to 1,400 km, so unlike a quick hop from Delhi it needs a little planning. The good news is that there are two excellent ways to do it: fly to Delhi and drive down, which is fastest, or take a comfortable direct train to Mathura Junction, which is the best value. Here, from a Braj-born guide who welcomes many Mumbai pilgrims, is exactly how to reach Vrindavan from Mumbai, whichever way suits you. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Mumbai to Vrindavan is about 1,400 km by road and roughly 1,250 km by rail to Mathura.

  • Fastest: fly Mumbai to Delhi (about 2 hr 10 min), then drive 3 to 3.5 hours; about half a day door to door.

  • Best value: a direct train to Mathura Junction, about 15 to 24 hours, overnight.

  • The fastest train is the August Kranti Rajdhani, Mumbai to Mathura in about 14 hr 43 min.

  • There is no airport or major station in Vrindavan; arrive via Delhi airport or Mathura Junction.

  • Driving the whole way is impractical at 22 to 26 hours; fly or take the train instead.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them, and I welcome many who come the long way from Mumbai. I know which trains are quick and comfortable, how the flight-and-drive works, and how to make the final leg into Vrindavan effortless. Here is everything you need to reach Vrindavan from Mumbai.

The distance from Mumbai to Vrindavan

First, the lie of the land. Vrindavan sits in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, between Delhi and Agra, about 1,400 km north of Mumbai by road and roughly 1,250 km by the rail route to Mathura. It has no airport of its own and no station large enough for long-distance trains, so every journey from Mumbai arrives either at Delhi airport, about 150 km away, or at Mathura Junction, the railhead, 14 km from Vrindavan. Knowing that shapes the whole trip: you travel to one of those two gateways, then cover a short last leg.

If time matters, fly. There is no direct flight to Braj, so the route is Mumbai to Delhi, then a road leg down to Vrindavan. It is comfortably a half-day journey and the choice of most travellers short on time.

  • Mumbai (BOM) to Delhi (DEL): about 2 hours 10 minutes, with very frequent daily flights.

  • Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan: about 3 to 3.5 hours by road on the Yamuna Expressway.

  • Total: roughly 6 to 7 hours door to door, half a day.

  • Agra option: a few flights reach Agra, about an hour from Braj, but connections are limited, so most routes through Delhi.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will be much closer to Braj once fully operational.

We can meet your flight at Delhi airport and carry you straight down to Vrindavan with our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service, so the road leg is effortless after your flight.

The train is the classic way to reach Braj from Mumbai, restful, scenic and good value, especially overnight. There is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction and drive the last 14 km, about 30 minutes. Several direct trains run daily; the table gives the main ones with their times and journey length.

Main direct Mumbai to Mathura trains. Timings are indicative and arrive the next day (+1); confirm live on IRCTC before booking.

  • Boarding in Mumbai: trains leave from Mumbai Central (MMCT), Bandra Terminus (BDTS), Dadar (DR), CSMT and Lokmanya Tilak (LTT), depending on the service.

  • Fastest and finest: the August Kranti Rajdhani, an all-AC train reaching Mathura in under 15 hours.

  • Fares: roughly ₹540 in sleeper up to about ₹3,700 in first-class AC; the Rajdhani is AC-only and dearer.

  • Book ahead: this is a busy corridor, so reserve well in advance, especially in festival season.

You can drive or take a bus, but honestly, it is a long haul. By car the roughly 1,400 km takes about 22 to 26 hours of driving, best split over two days with an overnight halt, perhaps near Indore or Kota. Long-distance buses run too, but they are tiring over such a distance. Unless you love a road trip and have days to spare, flying or the train is far better; the road is for those making a leisurely journey, not for reaching Braj quickly.

Which way is best?

It comes down to your time and budget. Flying via Delhi is the fastest and the choice for a short trip; the train is the most comfortable and best value, ideal if you enjoy an overnight journey; and the road is only for those making a slow road trip. The table sets them side by side.

From Delhi airport or Mathura Junction to Vrindavan

However you arrive, the last leg is short and easy. From Delhi airport it is about 3 to 3.5 hours by road down the Yamuna Expressway; from Mathura Junction it is only 14 km, about 30 minutes. After a long journey from Mumbai, it is far easier to be met than to haggle with local autos, and we can receive you at either gateway and carry you to your hotel or straight to the temples in the right order.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Braj, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best early, and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan, and in nearby Mathura the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very birthplace of the Lord. Having come so far, give yourself two or three days to see Braj properly.

The best time to make the trip

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj itself, pleasant at the temples and on the road; the summer of April to June is very hot. If you travel for a festival, Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Holi or Diwali, expect Braj to be joyful but crowded, and book your flights or train and hotel well ahead, as Mumbai travellers must reserve the long-distance legs early. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide for the seasons in full.

Tips for the journey from Mumbai

  • For speed, fly Mumbai to Delhi and arrange a car onward; be met at the airport to save time.

  • For value and comfort, take the August Kranti Rajdhani or another overnight train to Mathura Junction.

  • Book long-distance trains and flights well ahead, especially for festivals and holidays.

  • Give Braj two to three days, since you have travelled so far to reach it.

  • Carry warm layers in winter and light cottons in summer; north India differs from Mumbai's weather.

  • Arrange your Delhi airport or Mathura Junction pickup in advance for a smooth arrival.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. Mumbai is a long way from Vrindavan, so do not underestimate the journey; the flight-and-drive is quickest but means a road leg at the end, and the train, though lovely, is full overnight. The times and fares here are approximate and change with the season and demand, so confirm your flight and train live before booking. Having come nearly 1,400 km, it would be a pity to rush Braj in a day; stay two or three, and let the pilgrimage breathe. If you would rather rest on arrival, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels; if you are timing a festival, check the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar, when everything books out.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, and I welcome travellers from Mumbai every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you fly into Delhi or take the train to Mathura Junction, we meet you at the gateway, carry you the last leg and around the temples in the right order, and, if you wish, build Agra and the wider Braj into your days, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: if you fly, take a morning flight from Mumbai to Delhi and have a car waiting at the airport; you will reach Braj by afternoon, rest, and be ready for the evening aarti. If you take the train, choose an overnight service that reaches Mathura in the morning, so you step off rested and straight into a full day of darshan. Either way, being met at the gateway turns a long journey into an easy one.

"We were confused about whether to take a flight or train from Mumbai to Vrindavan. Experience My India explained both options clearly and recommended a flight to Delhi with a private car to Vrindavan. The airport pickup was on time, the car was clean, and everything was arranged smoothly. Their knowledge of Vrindavan temples made the trip even better. Excellent service from start to finish."

"This was our first trip to Vrindavan from Mumbai, so we needed help with everything from Mathura Junction pickup to temple visits. Experience My India made the whole process simple. We especially appreciated the guidance about travelling during the festival season and planning our darshan properly. The service felt personal rather than like a typical tour company."
