Kameshwar Mahadev: the guardian Shiva of Braj

Braj is watched over by its Mahadevas, the great forms of Shiva who guard the four quarters and the heart of Krishna's land and Kameshwar Mahadev of Kamyavan is one of them. The tradition names the guardian Shivas of Braj as Bhuteshwar Mahadev at Mathura, Gopeshwar Mahadev at Vrindavan, Chakleshwar Mahadev at Govardhan and Kameshwar Mahadev at Kamyavan, the fourth guardian on the great Chaurasi Kos Yatra, with the Braj scriptures speaking of five Mahadevas in all. The self-manifested, Swayambhu linga here was established, it is told, by Maharaja Vajranabha, Krishna's great-grandson, on the instruction of the sage Shandilya, when he revived the holy places of Braj; and this dense forest is said to be where Lord Brahma himself performed his penance in the Satya Yuga.

The Lord who fulfils all desires

The name Kameshwar holds the heart of the temple. Kama means desire and Kameshwar is the Ishwar, the Lord of desires, the Shiva who grants the wishes of his devotees. The Linga Purana keeps a prayer to him as Kameshvaraya Devaya Kamanartha Pradayine, the God Kameshwar, the giver of what is desired. The deeper reason for the name is a beautiful one: in the tradition, Lord Shiva here fulfilled the wish of Parvati, of Adi Shakti herself, who longed to know the truth of Shri Radha, the Radha-tattva; and because he granted even that highest wish, he is Kameshwar, the fulfiller of all. The very forest, Kama-van, also recalls Krishna's mastery over Kamadeva, the god of desire, so the whole place is bound to the theme of longing raised to the divine. Kamyavan: the Adi Vrindavan and land of 84

Kameshwar Mahadev cannot be spoken of apart from Kamyavan itself, the forest-town in which it stands. Kamyavan, the old Kaman, is one of the twelve forests, the Dwadasha Vana, of Braj and it is loved above them as the Adi Vrindavan, the original Vrindavan, for its ancient sanctity. It is famed as the land of 84, for in the tradition it holds 84 kunds, 84 tirthas and 84 temples, a whole sacred world gathered in one place and it is one of the great high points of the Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra. To come for Kameshwar is to step into this deep and old landscape of Krishna's leelas.

A visit to Kameshwar Mandir opens the door to the whole of Kamyavan. The chief sights are:

• The Kameshwar Mahadev linga: the ancient, self-manifested Shiva-linga, worshipped with Balgopal beside it.

• Vimal Kund: the main and most beautiful kund of Kamyavan, formed in the tradition from the loving tears of the daughters of King Vimala.

• The Govind and Vrinda Devi temple: the most famous temple of Kaman, home to the ancient deity of Vrinda Devi, the presiding devi of Vrindavan.

• Charan Pahari: a hill bearing the footprints of the Lord, among Kamyavan's loved sites.

• The Bhojan Thali: a sacred spot of Kamyavan linked to the leelas of Krishna's meal.

Timings and darshan

Kameshwar Mandir is an old temple open throughout the day, with morning and evening darshan and there is no entry fee. As with many Braj shrines, precise hours can vary, so it is worth reconfirming on the day. The table gives the general pattern.

How to reach Kameshwar Mahadev, Kamyavan

Kamyavan is the town of Kaman in the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, on the western edge of Braj, about 50 to 60 km from Mathura and reached most easily via Deeg, about 13 km away. Because it lies out in the countryside beyond the main towns, a private car is much the easiest way, taking you door to the temple and around the sites of Kamyavan. Buses and shared jeeps run to Kaman from Mathura and Deeg for those on a budget. The table sets out the ways.

When to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the drive out to Kamyavan and for walking its sacred sites. As a Shiva temple, Kameshwar Mahadev is dearest on Mondays, in the holy month of Shravan and above all on Mahashivratri, when devotees throng for darshan; and the whole of Kamyavan comes alive during the Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra. Tips for your visit

• Give Kamyavan a full outing; there is far more here than the temple alone.

• Go by car via Deeg and consider adding Deeg's palaces on the way.

• Come on a Monday or at Mahashivratri if you wish to feel the temple at its fullest.

• Wear modest clothing and easy footwear and carry water in the warmer months.

• Offer your prayer with faith; Kameshwar is the Lord of heartfelt wishes.
